2011 Formula 1 thread - Bigger and better than 2010!

Only 45 days to go before the start of the 2011 season. It's gonna be a long one this year with a 20 race schedule and in HD for the first time. (Hopefully Speed picks up the feed here in the US!)

Race Schedule:
  1. Bahrain 13th Mar
  2. Australia 27th Mar
  3. Malaysia 10th Apr
  4. China 17th Apr
  5. Turkey 8th May
  6. Spain 22nd May
  7. Monaco 29th May
  8. Canada 12th Jun
  9. Europe 26th Jun
  10. Great Britain 10th Jul
  11. Germany (Nurburgring) 24th Jul
  12. Hungary 31st Jul
  13. Belgium 28th Aug
  14. Italy 11th Sep
  15. Singapore 25th Sep
  16. Japan (Suzuka) 9th Oct
  17. Korea 16th Oct
  18. India 30th Oct
  19. UAE 13th Nov
  20. Brazil 27th Nov
(wow it's hard to format things like that in BBcode)

Other major news for 2011:
  • Team Renault is now Group Lotus-Renault and will be sporting the classic black and gold lotus trim. (Team Lotus will remain green.)
  • Pirelli is now the sole tire supplier replacing Bridgestone.
  • Movable rear wings are in... KERS is back... double decker diffusers are out!
  • BBC has announced that they will broadcast the new HD FIA feed.

Last year had the slowest start of any season that I can remember but it grew into one of the most exciting. Lets hope this one starts off fast and keeps up the pace.

import111 01-26-2011 06:54 PM

Can't wait to see what the 2011 cars look like and how the lap times compare with last year.

SPOHN 01-26-2011 07:01 PM

I love the Abu Dhabi track. That place is something else.

They were saying that the trick diffusers were worth 2s/lap. I can't wait to see if they were able to compensate and get faster... The adjustable rear wing might be interesting..

Apparently Kubica was injured in a rally crash today... Planet F1 is saying that both hands may be broken. Barrichello tweeted that he is in surgery now.

Mexican driver finally in F1.. Gotta prove Top Gear wrong.. In all reality I doubt he'll be in the top half but it's always exciting to see some progress for Mexico in Motorsports.

m4a1mustang 02-08-2011 06:55 AM

Haha, I don't think there's been a successful Mexican F1 campaigner since Pedro Rodriguez more than 40 years ago.

Well I heard that the race might be run later in the year, so there's hope yet.

haggomyeggo 03-15-2011 02:38 PM

im pretty pumped that the season is starting up again. I cant wait to see how the new wings and KERS coming back works out.

But it seems that the tires are going to be the big story this year. They are designed to not last incredibly long and with more stops strategy will be interesting.

Who watches the races live or does everybody "respect the pause" and DVR them?

haggomyeggo 03-15-2011 02:40 PM

what does everyone think about bernie's idea of "making it rain" or wetting down the track for the last 10 laps or whatever to make the racing more interesting?

waste of talent, doesnt seem to be the safest idea either!

That would be gay

I think that the tires are going to make things interesting. The best races last year were the ones where the tires went off really fast. Maybe add back some of the strategy lost with refueling.

I usually download/pirate the BBC coverage Sunday morning and watch with friends and beer in the afternoon. No comparison to the Speed broadcast.

The rain thing is retarded... I actually like the option of cutting a chicane x times a race more than the rain idea.

Tire wear on the inters...

The dry's go out even worse, and last about 1-2 laps at most, and according to some your off by 2 seconds after than.

This season will make almost every race seam like Canada last year. good stuff

m4a1mustang 03-15-2011 03:29 PM

Seems like they finally got the memo from NASCAR. If the tires go to crap after a few laps you end up wih some good racing ala Canada last year. Should be a great season!

you must tell me how to do this and get it to stream to my HDTV.

i hate the speed broadcast and would love to get the BBC feed

flashburn 03-15-2011 03:47 PM

So this will be my first season trying to get into F1. What's so bad about the Speed coverage versus BBC? If it's that much better, then I can see waiting until Sunday and downloading it as well (probably available on Newsgroups).

sig11 03-15-2011 03:59 PM

The prerace is a fun hour with Coulthard, Martin Brundle, Eddie Jordan, and whats his face... It's worth grabbing them for the pre race alone. I usually pull them off alt.binaries.formula1 about 1-2 hours after the race ends. If you're willing to wait a bit longer you can grab them off various torrent sites. Usually still same day. I then use my PS3 or Xbox to watch on my way-too-big-for-my-house TV. TiVo works in a pinch too.

If y'all want I can post up Hungary, Italy, or Brazil if you want to see the usual quality/size. It's going to be even better this year with the races in HD. I have Brazil quali buildup/qualifying if you want to see that too.

Basically... I'm a nut.

haggomyeggo 03-15-2011 04:02 PM

the announcers are really not that great. In F1 there is a camera crew that feeds every broadcasting company and Speed announcers really have to just "wait and see" what views they are going to give you. its called "the world feed" so the announcers dont really control the cameras they just comment on whatever is fed to them. Pretty sure the BBC has to do this too but F1 is huge in the UK. Most of the teams are located in the UK so they take it much more seriously and have better announcers.

F1 just isnt that big in the states. We dont even have a race here anymore. (soon to change hopefully) America loves NASCAR i guess. I never have understood that but I do respect the drivers and their abilities. the F1 races are all over the world and that means if you want to watch it live you have to stay up at like 3am to watch. (perfect if you just came home from a night of drinking and have some jack in the box) but otherwise pre-DVR world kinda sucked

The BBC has been broadcasting the F1 series for years except for a couple of years they lost the contract a couple of years ago. Their broadcasters are pretty good. Even David Couthard makes a funny every once in awhile.

Plus i think BBC has multiple feeds. I know they have a feed thats just for kids as well as the regular broadcast.
