What's in your camera bag?

Hi I'm Michael and I am a professional photographer. I don't talk "shop" much around here since this is a car forum but I love photography and thought I would introduce myself as such.

I was a fashion photographer for 5 years but these days shoot mostly portraiture, wildlife and events. I am looking to get into photojournalism as I tend to want to challenge myself with new things. Question on this in a minute... first.. my bag!

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7008/6...41f66a8e_b.jpg

My question for those of you who are photogs is, given that I want to focus a bit more attention on photojournalism, what lens/s could I stand to lose/gain? Bare in mind that I maintain a biz where I need certain lens's in the bag.

For example, I want to hold onto my 28-300mm as it's a great lens for versatility and it's really durable (I use it all the time). I really love my 100mm as I shoot quite a bit of macro wildlife stuff. The 10-22mm I don't really need but it provides some fun and interesting shots for events, etc.

I really wouldn't mind picking up a EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM but since I don't shoot sports (professionally) I really can't justify the kind of $$$ just for my kids soccer games. :p A second choice would be the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM. This seems like it would be a great addition to my bag but IDK.

Ideas?

takjak2 12-18-2011 02:21 PM

You wouldn't use it much for photojournalism, but I'm surprised to not see a 50mm f/1.4

I thought about it. Honestly for some reason I think I would get more use out of the 35. But it was definitely something I had considered a few times.

Hey Michael,

I am not a professional, but may I suggest you will put in your bag:

1) 18-200mm
2) 28-300mm
3) 10-22mm
4) 17-85mm (optional)

The first three covers almost everything you need, do you really need 3 bodies in the bag???

My bag:

1) Tokina 11-16mm/f2.8
2) Nikon 35-70mm/f2.8
3) Nikon 80-200mm/f2.8
4) D300
5) CPL filter, Softer, Cross-Star filter
6) Sigma Speedlight
7) Nikon 17-35mm/f2.8(optional since I have the 11-16mm)

:hello:

:hello:

I ditched the 20D and 18-200 (gave that setup to my wife who is always bugging me for a camera to use :icon17: )

I'm going to hold onto the 100mm since I do a lot of fun outdoors macro with it. Other than that, yeah, I think I've got it pretty well put together I guess. Might start selling some of my lighting off... I dunno.

Can't find a bag I like to replace my EOS 630 bag but I'd probably have a similar collection once I find a bag: 50D with 15-85, 70-300 or Tamron 18-270, 580EZ, spare battery and flash cards, mini-tripod, may be Sigma 18-50/2.8.

Right now my only bag has LX5 with EVF and spare SD cards :)

I'm happy with my Camera Bag. I use mine for nature shots and family pictures. In the past I carried a Sony with Multiple Lens. Now this one Camera does it all better, clearer and easier to use in one smaller package that I can take anywhere. We'll except underwater. I'll get a cheapo Go Pro HD Hero for that duty.

The new camera -
Sony 16.2 Megipixal Digital Camera DSC-HX100V. I like the HDMI outputs, panarama shots, the super zoom lens and of course the price. Big bang for the buck. Bought 2extra batteries, flexi tripod, bottle pod, charger that works 12V & 120V and nice camera bag all for under $100 online. So for under $500 I'm good with my set up. It's not a professional set up but, it is easy to use and gives me great picts and movs with a few nice features like time elapse etc...

And one of my first shots:

Just got a new bag (Valentines) fit in 50D with 15-85, 18-270 and 18-50/2.8 and 580Ex flash, extra battery and charger, and still have room for iPad. Oh, and some toy body cap lenses and some extra flash cards. And my Giotto rocket.

Ehh, I'll post my modest bag, I've got too many hobbies to be any good at any of them:

Nikon D5000 with a 2-cell battery grip, second shutter release comes in handy
18-55mm kit lens
Nikkor ED 70-300mm
52mm and 67mm polarizers and UV filters
Vivitar shutter remote with bulb lock, handy for long star trail shots
Nikon SB-700 Speedlight, easily my most value-added purchase
T-Ring and T-Mount adaptor for prime focus telescope shots
Ultrapod 2 mini tripod
Quantaray monopod
Miscellaneous memory chips

Here's a quick shot mounted on my GF's 127mm Celestron, which does not fit in my bag

A noob in photography. I thought I'll be able to find enough time to really dabble in photography but never did.

Inside my bag (at least what I can remember):

Nikon D90
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8
Nikkor 18-200mm VR (first version)
Nikkor 12-24mm f/4
Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control
Hoya CPL 72mm
Hoya CPL 77mm

and other misc items

Momo50 02-26-2012 09:59 PM

My Bag:
Nikon D700
Nikon D300
Canon G12
Lenses: 11-18mm, 60mm macro, 50mm 1.4, 24-124 zoom, 70-300mm zoom.
I still have a great bag of 35mm stuff too, two Nikon FA's with motordrives, and many Nikkor lenses. My Vehicle plate is "ISO 3200" which is the fastest ISO on my D300. D700 gose up to ISO 6400, but I didn't have it when I got the plate (no one did) and it's a sexier number anyway.

osbornsm 04-20-2012 02:16 PM

Okay i'll bite...

Canon EOS 450D - XSI
  • EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
  • EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS
  • EF 50mm f/1.4
  • 58mm Circular Polarizer - Hoya
  • 58mm UV Filter - Hoya

Any suggestions for possibly upgrading? I'm sort of at a loss as to what's next. Or maybe that's a good sign to stop ;)

HKYStormFront 04-20-2012 03:45 PM

used 50 or 60D would be a good start.

He's probably come to the realization that you don't need to spend tons of $$$ to achieve truly great photos.
