I visited the B&H superstore in Manhattan on Sunday and nearly needed a new pair of pants. OMG, it's Disney World for any photo or gadget guy. I bought a Manfrotto Monopod with a Manfroto ballhead. I don't remember the model number, bu it has the legs on the bottom that flip out. I can't wait to use this thing.

HKYStormFront 10-23-2012 10:30 AM

yea that place is candyland for cameras. i'd like to go next time i make my way up to NYC!

Need advice :)

Currently looking for prime lenses for Canon L lenses

70% of the time, it's for automobile and 30% portraits and etc

I'm looking at 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm

I believe 85 is ideal for portraits but I really like the feed backs.

What do you think I should get?

Current body is 5D mkII

Lenses I have: 16-35, 24-70, 70-200

Thanks in advance.

:)

HKYStormFront 11-04-2012 05:41 AM

85 hands down. if you get a bit of sticker shock, check out the 135 f/2, you'd be surprised how good it is on full frame

In my opinion the 85 is a bit too short. I prefer the 135f2.0 as it gives a more flattering portrait and more room to light.

I'm a prime guy. 1Dx, 5DIII, 14f2.8, 24f1.4, 50f1.0, 85f1.2, 100f2.8(m), 135f2, 180f3.5(m), 200f2, 300f2.8, 400f2.8, 400DO, 600f4, 17, 24, 45 and 90tse and the fabulous and only zoom 8-15 fish zoom.

Gitzo 3 series CF tripod w/ Giotto ball head, Elinchrome portable lighting, Elinchrome and Profoto studio lighting, Eizo monitor and a killer mac pro for editing.

Canon C300/C500/1DC for video (working for Canon has its advantages) :)

what do you think of the 400 2.8 vs the 400 DO? i haven't used either, i'd just like to know your experiences with them.

also... you have a 50 f/1.0?!

Dsphoto 11-08-2012 06:14 AM

The only benefit of the DO is it's weight. The lens is very light. It is super sharp, rivaling the 4002.8 but the bokeh is funky. Out of focus specular highlights have rings in them. If you are careful it isn't noticeable. If I need light weight I use the DO. The 2.8 is a super sharp lens, the only one that is better is the 200.

200f2 - The BEST beauty lens

I do have a 50f1 (and a 50f1,2 and a 50f0.95 for Canon rangefinder cameras). This lens, although super fast, is not very sharp until you hit f2.0-f2.8. The softness is very interesting though as it is super sharp in the center but sharpness falls off as you move off center. Not bad as a portrait lens but way too short in focal length.

I love the 135 soft focus for portraits. It has a ring that allows you to dial in the softness from totally sharp to quite soft in three increments. It produces softness by inducing spherical abberation. The result is a sharp image with a soft image on top of it. It is unique effect most similar to using Zeiss Softar filters. Very different form diffusion filters.

HKYStormFront 11-08-2012 07:00 AM

thanks! yea i've heard that about the 50 f/1.0. i hate to say it but instead of dropping serious coin on the f/1.2 and an 85 f/1.2, i've been thinking i'd try to find the 50 f/1.4 and 85 f/1.8. close to the same effect tho not the quality of the L lenses. i will eventually get a 35 f/1.2 as well. i'm just trying to decide now if i would rather have those (which i don't have room for in my camera case) or focus on upgrading my f/4 zooms to f/2.8's when funds allow

Dsphoto 11-08-2012 09:00 PM

The 50f1.4 is an awesome lens. Sharp with great bokeh. The only issue is that it is rather fragile. The mechanism isn't as durable as the L lenses. As I said, I am a prime guy. They are sharper, much faster and better corrected than zooms as well as being lighter.

You may need to get a bigger bag!

Just picked up the Micro-Nikkor 105mm/f2.8 an hour ago. A little early Christmas present to myself. I can't wait to her out for a spin. It's a lot heaver and bigger than I imagined.

Picked up a NIKKOR 28mm f1.8, effectively a 42mm on my D5000. Need to go out and play with it but the weather up here isn't very accommodating:

That's a really nice piece of glass, but kind of pricey for a DX format camera. I was looking at this when I purchased my 35mm 1f/1.8 which was a fraction of the cost and just as sharp. The wider angle difference is negligible. This is great if you ever decide to go Full Frame though.

Titan1080 12-31-2012 06:34 PM

True but planning on picking up an FX body down the line, also have an FX 70-300 lens.

Looking for opinions from the Canon guys. I've got the hankering for macro lens and am trying to decide between the 180mm 3.5 and the 100mm 2.8. Both have pretty amazing MTF charts and I like the new technology in the 100. Any opinions or experience with either?

Not a Canon user but can shed some insight. If you have a crop sensor camera, the 100mm has enough reach for most macro stuff and can double as a great portrait lens. The 180mm is gonna give you the reach if you plan on taking pics of tiny insects from a greater working distance. I wouldn't worry to much about image stabilization or Auto Focus tech since macro work is easier if done manually. The 3.5 vs 2.8 isn't much of a difference since it becomes razor thin. Truthfully, the 100mm is more than enough....but it really depends on what you shoot and what you shoot with. You could always add extension tubes.

I have the old 100mm. Agree this is long enough mostly, on a crop body. If full frame would want the 180. I have done a lot of macro work. I disagree that IS isn't useful, could be very helpful. Both great lenses. Agree that 2.8 isn't a useful aperture if actually shooting macro subjects. But can make for a nice portrait lens

I meant for macro work. IS isn't really useful since you're more than likely using a smaller apertures, a tripod and strobes. If you're gonna use it as a portrait lens, then yes, it does help.

Just picked up a LensAlign Mark II for calibrating lenses. Found out my Canon 70-200 F4 was waaaay out of calibration. Anxious to take some shots in the daylight to see the difference.

do you use microadjust to make corrections?

Your camera has to have micro-adjustment capabilities.

The only complaint that I have is that there were no real instructions for use. I had to go online and do some searching to find good info.
Tip for anyone using this. After you take your shots, the best way to see the focus is to take your images into Photoshop and apply the emboss filter. It's very obvious once you do this.

On another note, I picked up a D7000 for my camera bag :). As much as I'd like to go Full-Frame, I just can't justify the cost at the moment considering I'd have to also sell & replace a few of my lenses as well. I was looking at the D300s at first, but most of the one's I found were in rough shape or still a bit pricey. Aside from the pro body, the D7000 also has a few features that out match it. I'm really liking the cleaner high ISO.

The D600 was pretty much just a D7000 with a FF sensor at twice the price. If they come down in price, I may consider trading for it later. They also introduce the new D7100 last week, so the price dropped a bit for the D7000.

I'm selling my D90 if anyone is interested.
