My girlfriend and I shoot with a Nikon D700 and D90 both with battery grips.
our lenses: Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR1 http://images.us.viewbook.com/5d8d04...47ee_small.jpg Nikon 10.5mm f2.8 DX(crop sensor) fisheye http://images.us.viewbook.com/c544e4...a700_small.jpg Nikon 85mm f1.8 http://images.us.viewbook.com/496543...6bf7_small.jpg Sigma 30mm f1.4 http://images.us.viewbook.com/b4b0f1...baea_small.jpg Nikon 16-35mm f4 VR http://images.us.viewbook.com/e4981d...0b62_small.jpg Nikon 105mm Micro VR (yes.... Micro, not typo lol) http://images.us.viewbook.com/145264...2ea4_small.jpg for flash we just carry an SB600 unless we need the studio lights.... needing to buy the Vagabond Mini still. |

Damn Dallaz, those are awesome pics and awesome lenses. Would love to have that setup!
I second that you dont need to have expensive lenses to get good shots. I have a hand me down Nikon D50 that my sister gave me since she has a D90 now but it does the job. I still have the stock 18-55mm lens plus the 70-300mm zoom which have allowed me to take pictures such as these: 18-55mm (came with camera, works best when zoomed all the way out to 18mm) http://www.the370z.com/members/vdc_o...-18mm-f3-8.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/vdc_o...zs-18mm-f5.jpg 70-300mm (this works best when zoomed all the way in..more bokeh!) http://www.the370z.com/members/vdc_o...-200mm-f40.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/vdc_o...-85mm-f5-6.jpg But I have also recently purchased these two which I love. Each for about $200. 50mm 1.8 (great for portraits) http://www.the370z.com/members/vdc_o...-50mm-f3-2.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/vdc_o...-50mm-f3-5.jpg 35mm 1.8 (also great for portraits but a little wider for cars too) http://www.the370z.com/members/vdc_o...e-35mm-1-8.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/vdc_o...r-35mm-f14.jpg I love these lenses but next Im looking for something a little more wideangle. I like that 10.5mm 2.8 you have Dallaz, might just have to save up for that one. |

After shooting with the D40's for a while, I decided to upgrade to the D300 mainly because I would shoot my friends skateboarding (the reason for the fisheye) and wanted the 8fps with the optional battery grip, soon after that we bought the D90 and after a while ditched the 300 for the 700. Switching to full frame after shooting DX crop since the start was AMAZING! You should look into the fisheye, but be warned..... It is insanely wide! Just leave it focused at infinity on manual focus mode and anything past 2 feet from the sensor will be in focus so you don't even have to think about the shot, just take it. http://img.tapatalk.com/632f5d7e-d94e-186a.jpg This one we were probably only an inch or 2 from the flower http://img.tapatalk.com/632f5d7e-d95e-6a0f.jpg Shot while climbing a 14'er in Colorado http://img.tapatalk.com/632f5d7e-d9e6-e578.jpg An older image I shot with this lens that is way over edited but I used to go a little overboard. I would say the front of the lens on this one was less than a foot away from the tip of his board. http://img.tapatalk.com/632f5d7e-dace-bd45.jpg BTW I'm not trying to take over the thread with photos, just posting some shots with the fisheye to aid in VDC's decision and anyone else's who may be skeptical about dropping money on a lens that many consider too wide and distorted for most photography applications. |

Some damn good work on these pages! My favorites are the car with the smoke trailing it ( had 25 in the window) the honeybee, the kid on the skateboard, and the bluejay.
|
For photojournalism, you would want some fast glass, mostly normal focal length or mild wide angle more than telephoto.
|
Nice photos. Thanks much.

i'm really loving the 135L lens, here's a GTR shot at f/2 on my 5D2:

Here's a picture I found from a thread over on the M3 forum that I'm on and I believe it to be shot with the same lens... NOT MY PHOTO* just an example: http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/v...a4e06e12_o.jpg Same awesome bokeh... could be the same lens I think. Possibly the 70-200L f2 but I don't know enough about that lens to make that determination. I think it's the 135L here again! Edit: I guess if someone could pull the EXIF data from the pic? I don't know how to do that. |
thats magazine quality right therrr and all for just $1000.
|
thanks guys! :tiphat: yup that's the 135 you linked to. i bought it barely used for $900. there's a "Camera Gear" facebook group. it's like craigslist for pro's and semi-pro's. check it out. i'm not sure what lens was used for that shot but i know jeremy and i know he has a 70-200 f/2.8 so i'd imagine that's probably the case there. he's a friend on facebook so i asked him, i'll see what he replies...
the owner ordered a 20x30" print of that one today... as did i :bowrofl: |

edit: jeremy replied, yes it was his 70-200 f/2.8 |

I'm not sure if that one is the same 135. The bokeh doesn't look as creamy, it looks like maybe if it was taken with that same 135mm that it was over sharpened in post, but that's just IMO, still an awesome shot. |

Did I call that on the lens or what! ;) |

Stormy, when getting a large format printed, do you typically have the finished hi-res at 300dpi?
|
yea there is a distinct difference between f/2 and f/2.8. here's a shot with my 200mm prime @ f/2.8:
http://jpmcgphotography.smugmug.com/...IMG0406-XL.jpg it has a similar look and DoF despite the higher f-stop due to the longer zoom. so basically it's the same DoF w/ more compression. the lens even looks the same and uses the same filter size lol |

Just bought the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G to compliment my 50mm f/1.8D. What a great little lens. I think I found my new favorite.

Nice shots sail! What sort of gear you shooting with?

I thought I posted reply but don't see it. The Maine harbor with red rowboat was shot with a very old Asahi Pentax Spotmatic with a Vivitar 35mm lens which I had bought in Vietnam in 1967. High Speed Ektachrome slide film, scanned. The baby robins were shot with a Sony DSC-F828. Now using a Canon 40D I got couple years ago, several lenses, some left over from an old Canon EOS 100 I used for several years. The girl off the beach at La Jolla was shot with a 100-300 EF US Canon zoom.
I much appreciate the kind words, coming from a pro. |

Sorry for sizing problems.

I still haven't caught on to the sizing of digital photos for posting on forums. Any advice welcome. This was shot at dusk--light getting pretty dim. Stopped along side road, no tripod, hand-held.
