Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think didymus' picture was shot with a Rebel XT (8MP camera)

I would say that investing in better lenses would help. When I rented an L-lens I noticed a good improvement and I had more pics in my sets that were usable compared to the ones that I own.

yea once you own some L-glass, all you want is L's. good glass is way more important than the camera body behind it, generally speaking.

Based on the price, I'd guess "luxury." (I don't really know.)

Just getting a good prime lens will set you in the right direction and will change the way you take pictures.

Hey everyone!

Took some photos on saturday. Not impressed by the photos at all.

Using kit 55mm lens. Iso settings were around 6400 or more and I had a tripod..

How can I take great night pictures. Is it the lens? Is it me?

When I switched to manual, sometimes it wouldn't even let me take the picture.

Here are some shots... please critique.

More MP is not the answer. As boost says my camera is an "ancient" rebel XT released in 2005? I guess you need to clarify your question, what you mean by "clear." If you mean sharp, then recommendations for nicer glass is probably good. I always tell people to spend on glass not on the camera. (rarely does someone listen... they will often do the opposite and buy an upgraded non-entry level SLR with a kit lens).

First thing is your ISO. The pictures are rather noisy because you had the ISO so high. What mode were you shooting with?

The idea with a tripod is you set the ISO to 100, and stop the aperture down somewhat (depending on your subject), and then you can shoot long exposures without getting camera shake. So there is no reason to have ISO 6400 in general if you have a tripod. You just increase the exposure time until it is appropriate. The easiest thing would be to use aperture priority mode, set ISO manually, and go from there.

What do you mean it wouldn't let you take the picture? What camera are you using?

Most likely the reason that it wouldn't shoot is focusing. Go to manual focus when it's extremely dark.

Yeah, I suppose sharp is the better term. I can't invest in any L series glass just yet but I did just buy a 55-250mm lens to play with. More practice is in store for this weekend. I've got about 5 more topics for a photo scavenger hunt.

better lenses = better pictures 99% of the time. the camera is about the features such as how good the auto focus is, how good the image processing is, the quality of the image sensor, the longevity of the shutter, the ISO noise level control, etc. megapixel itself is only really relevant when talking about printing large photos. i've printed 20x30" posters from my 12mp 5D1, my 21mp 5D2 and they look great, but my old school (canon) D60 6mp looked just fine too.
