Some tips, I hope you don't mind :tiphat:

1st Image:
The garage shot is okay, but it's a little noisy and the lighting is a bit off. Next time, set it on a tripod...or anything steady and try theses settings:
-Set the ISO to 200. This will keep the noise low.
-Leave it in "A" Aperture priority and set the aperture to f/8 or f/11. This will keep most of the subject in focus.
-Get a remote or set the timer to take the shot. This will keep everything sharp.
-Leave the flash off. You can play around with natural lighting. The built-in flash will wash everything out. Don't use it unless you're just taking a picture instead of a photograph, if you know what I mean.

2nd Image:
-great pic of a really cute dog
-next time, try getting lower to the ground.

3rd Image:
-looks great, but it's a bit too busy....too many things in the frame that's distracting. The car kind of gets lost.

Overall a great start. Just need to work on your technique a bit. You'll get the hang of it with some practice. Keep at it:tup:

Nice to see some constructive criticism here, something that someone can learn from.

I agree LunaZ! Mike is the man!

My Canon 50mm 1.4 is still up for sale. PM me if interested and we can deal.

LunaZ 02-13-2013 01:08 PM

I'm thinking about selling my 7D.

Whats the difference in lens? Isnt that pretty close to the 55mm 1.8 that comes as the kit lens

6spd 02-13-2013 03:32 PM

The kit lens is an 18-55, and its f/stop number only goes as low as 3.5-5.6. The 50mm f/1.4 is a prime lens (non-zoom) and it goes to f/1.4 for a very shallow depth of field and allows much more light into the camera than the kit lens. The sharpness is incredible. Its a $400 lens. Heres a link for more info: Canon U.S.A. : Consumer & Home Office : EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

Mine is only roughly 4-5 months old and has only been used for shoots 5-6 times. Almost new condition.

The kit lens has a variable max aperture (f-stop number). It has a maximum aperture of f/3.5@18mm & f/5.6@55mm. Smaller number means larger aperture...which means better in low light conditions. The Depth of field gets narrower, which can be a good thing. It creates bokeh...fancy word for "pleasing blurred background while the subject is in focus."

You should definitely pick up a 50mm f/1.8G as your next lens. It's relatively inexpensive (less than $200) and a very sharp lens. The 50mm f/1.8D is even cheaper, around $100, but it's only manual focus with your camera.

6spd 02-13-2013 04:30 PM

Oh thats right, you have a nikon Nick.

I'm going to use the sale to fund my upgrade.
Wish I would have thought of this when blackcherry20 was looking to buy.
Anyway, a friend of mine made very compelling arguments for full frame and that the 7D is holding me back a bit with beauty work because it isn't capturing all the texture that's there, making my post work that much more challenging.
So I'm looking at the 6D or a 5D MkII.

Might be my favourite lens in my bag.

I love it. Don't forget videos might not be as good but since when can you mount your dslr on your car, head, put it underwater etc.

Ok guys, I need some advice/instruction/opinions/constructive criticism. This was shot with my D5100 and stock lens, then edited in CS6. I'm still learning everything (I just installed CS6 yesterday lol) so if you guys wanna tell me what I could do better or different on any point, please don't hesitate

and this one was edited on my ipad to see if using photoshop was a major difference from snapseed lol...

TreeSemdyZee 02-13-2013 09:01 PM

My first thought is "polarizer". It will crank up the blues of the sky and kill reflections in the car.
I'm still learning a lot about post-processing, but these could be helped a lot. More saturation for one.

Cmike2780 02-13-2013 09:03 PM

Looks great Huck

NickTurnon 02-13-2013 09:04 PM

Huck, you need to buy some spacers! I have the same setup and just added 20mm spacers all around. Its such a big difference when looking at your car and mine now!

Take a look at this picture. Its not a great pic. But my wheels fill the gaps now. I might get springs, but who knows..

http://s7.postimage.org/4n5k1a3ln/DSC_0133.jpg

Huck 02-13-2013 09:04 PM

I like using saturation, I'm all about the colors being vivid and amazing, but when I tried to use more the concrete became orange and yellow and was really distracting. Where is the polarizer?

Actually I'm saving up for wheels. I have a set of brand new wheels that I'm trying to get rid of right now to help pay for the M368's I want, and when I order those I'll just get aggressive offsets so that they're flush. Then it's Swift springs! Thanks for the suggestion thought

Thanks Mike, I appreciate it!

TreeSemdyZee 02-13-2013 09:09 PM

You'd have to buy a polarizing filter. I've got a Hoya DMC PRO1 Digital Circular Polarizer.

I don't use Photoshop much, but I know Lightroom has the ability to pump the saturation, etc in certain color ranges.

NickTurnon 02-13-2013 09:09 PM

Huck, have you tried using Lightroom?

I downloaded the free 30 day trial. But i've had awesome experiences with it so far for editing my photos.

Let me know what you think of CS6 after a week or two!

TreeSemdyZee 02-13-2013 09:09 PM

A couple of shots from an Italian festival last fall.

I haven't used it yet, but I've heard a lot about it. I'll try it out. I know this is totally noobish, but I've fallen in love with Snapseed on my iPad, it's crazy simple to use and actually has really good results. The only thing I don't like about it is that I can edit a 4mb pic on the iPad and then when I save the edited version it's downsized to maybe 1.5bm, so the picture quality is sacrificed. All of these pictures were taken with my D5100 and then edited with Snapseed.

TreeSemdyZee 02-13-2013 09:36 PM

I paid $90 for a 77mm.

Huck 02-13-2013 09:41 PM

Ok cool, I was seeing them for as low as $30ish online all the way up to $150

TreeSemdyZee 02-13-2013 09:42 PM

If you want a lot of latitude in processing, RAW is the only way to go. The pictures are huge. Mine range from 20 to 30 MB each, but you have so much more info to work with.

Cmike2780 02-13-2013 10:38 PM

Huck, in Photoshop, you can play around with each channel. The blues/cyan can be adjusted independently for example. There are several ways to get just the sky darker or lighter without affecting everything else. The easiest is the dodge/burn tool.

Lr is awesome for editing and cataloging a lot of photos. I especially like how you can save and apply presets to multiple images. It saves a lot of time and makes your series of images more consistent, especially working with multiple RAW files. Not as powerful as photoshop, but a lot easier to learn and can do most of the light touch up work.

Huck 02-14-2013 07:31 AM

Thanks for the tips guys! Now I just need to decide what pictures to use and which ones to delete. My first impulse is to just edit all 90 something pics I took lol.

Huck, those shots look nice with that camera. That app seems to make the pictures a little too HDR'ish for me but they are absolutely entertaining to look at.

I especially like the babe in the 4th pic...just sayin'

Good shots though!

Huck 02-14-2013 12:35 PM

Thanks man, I have a weakness for crazy amounts of effects, sometimes I go a little overboard.

The babe is my wife, that was at a car show went went to over the weekend. I'm pretty lucky to find a smokin girl who shares my enthusiasm for cars, video games, anime, and bloody movies :bowrofl: she's the perfect package.
