Thanks to everyone who helped out with advice on lighting and what to buy.
I've decided to increase my budget for a lighting setup to get more out of my time and money investment, so I'm holding off a month so I can buy something a little better that the stuff I was originally looking at on Amazon.

Actually I hate it. I'm doing a proper photoshoot with her today. I can't stand the blur on that shot. I was actually just experimenting with HDR which I think came out pretty nice. But location and crazy blur kill it

my car. roommate's photo. some of you may have already seen this. I can't get enough. It was maybe a 1 second exposure, probably f/8. 5D MkII.

And it's actually 3 exposures that are HDR merged in PS and the image was worked on for like 3 frickin hours.

But this is my idea of HDR

The amount of HDR in the first pic is nice, but I wasn't a fan of the extreme depth-of-field after the fact.
I like the second one though!

Alien Bees with octoboxes on order for anyone who's wondering.
