Strobe lights, especially the better ones you are using, are fast enough to stop action such as the cartridge falling through the water. Could some be the disturbance of the water distorting the image? Are all strobes firing simultaneously? What happens if just one strobe light is used? Is focus exact on the object once dropped? Camera shutter speed has nothing to do with stopping this action--it's all the strobe light. You just have to chose a shutter speed that allows the strobes to sync properly with your camera.

I got really creative this weekend and balanced a reflector on top of my backdrop frame to create the effect of a hair light. It actually worked quite well.
I think the different temperatures of the all the lights I'm using is throwing things off. I've turned my white balance down to a cooler temperature to try to compensate.
I'd like to add strobes with softboxes to my kit, but I want to make sure I understand what I'm doing with them before I write that check.

You just reminded me I need to check that this new monitor is calibrated correctly!

Lovely woman, interesting pose, no clutter, but I think your light is the problem as the skin tone is off a little. Has that faintly space-alien look...

When mixing types of lights, it's tough to get skin tones right.

This isn't a particularly good quality photo, but I think it captured a nice moment. Part of the group taking in the view at the 8 mile overlook on The Dragon. 5-16-12

I like this photo, Mr. Mustang.

Nice photograph, nice car for sure, but seems too low to be a practical road car. No curbs or dips or inclined driveways where that thing goes!

m4a1mustang 05-22-2012 04:20 PM

I don't think Kevin intended for it to be a practical road car. :icon17:

Not sure the speed though I could look. I was trying to shoot slow to get more wheel spin but shots were coming out too blurry. It was my first time really shooting fast moving objects. It was tough but Im glad with the results. I too would have liked more blur on the wheels.

Steve I love the "smoke" in the mountains in that pic:tup: Its absolutely beautiful around there. The PERFECT place to hold an event like that. I loved everything from the people to the scenery to the cars. What a great week.

Dude I got SO caught up in chilling with my neighbor, Ron from Alabama. Ron, his GF Karen, cousin Dave and his wife Crystal were super cool. We partied HARD. I tried to make it back up to 660 to hang with you guys some more but it just never materialized. You guys were all cool. Got to chat with Al on a few occasions, once at the grill for quite a bit. Spoke to Randy a few times also. Would have liked to meet Dan. You guys all drove past me on Wed (I think) while I was walking up to my room. I ran like hell to take a piss and get in the car. I figured you would be heading for the Dragon so I made a left outta FVR. I think you guys went right up 28 cause we passed you on Hellbender on our way back.

Alchemy 05-22-2012 06:38 PM

Here is another shot of that car

Well I'm glad you got to swing by when you guys showed up on Tuesday night and then we got to chill a bit at the Z1 party. Next year we'll definitely be doing some more partying. I will be there the whole week so I won't be as inclined to start cruises at 8am. :bowrofl:

Anyone have a recommendation for a good, yet reasonably priced, flash for a 60d?

I need an external flash myself. That and a nice tripod, been puttin that off forever.

m4a1mustang 05-23-2012 09:23 AM

I like the 580EX II but damn it's expensive.

I'd personally stick to the Canon Speedlights and also buy an off shoe flash cord. Even something like a Speedlight 270EX will be 100 times better than the built-in and it's pretty inexpensive compared to the more powerfull flashes. Get the 430EX if it's within your budget (more versatile). Either will let you direct the flash other than straigh on, which is huge in how your images come out.
