I believe the 480EX has built-in remote capability with the 60D

That's overkill for most people. It's a powerful flash, but if you're shooting something stationary, like a car, coffee mug, whatever...off camera strobes would be better anyways.

m4a1mustang 05-23-2012 09:40 AM

Looks like it. 430 EX II... much more reasonably priced.

If I buy the 60D I wonder if it's worth it to get it with one of the kit lenses. 18-135 or 18-200.

The 600's big advantage is remote control of multiple flash units. I have the 580 EX II and it does a great job.

It's a remote wireless 'slave' unit so I would check on the 60D's capability as a master unit....otherwise you might need a speedlite transmitter to shoot wireless. Not that important a factor though.

I bought it with the 18-200mm and paid $1249 complete. The body alone was $1199...

The 60D is capable of Master function with remote slave flashes (480EX and up)

I think that the 600 can function as "master".

480? I see no 480, only 430.

It is the 430.

Amazon has the 60D with 18-200 kit lens for $1299, then another ~275 for a flash should I choose to get one. Hmmm...

You talkng about the Speedlite 600? or the 60D? I just wasn't sure about the 60D. I shoot with a Nikon and my D90 can act as a Master and so can my SB-900.

Enablers. :shakes head:

B&H pricing looks competitive with Amazon, but I get $3.99/item overnight shipping with Prime.

Also, any point in selling my Rebel XS, or should I just hold on to it.

I'd sell it unless you want to use it as a back up. A lot of photographers like switching cameras instead of switching lenses, so if you are ever in that situtation, it comes in handy. If you're not going to ever use it again, I'd sell it now and get more for it. Otherwise it will likely just collect dust.

m4a1mustang 05-23-2012 10:19 AM

Looks like they aren't worth much so probably better to hold on to it as a backup.

I'm good at one thing and one thing only... wasting money.

I trolled my fiancee to be able to buy this. I changed my FB status to "engaged" (even though we were engaged a while ago) and when she "liked" it I said, "can I get a 60D as an engagement present?" :bowrofl:

Well I still haven't pulled the trigger. Wondering if I should get the 430 ex ii as well. It would definitely help with indoor lower light stuffs.

An off camera flash is a must have if you want to take great pictures in less than perfect conditions. Period. Especially indoors. Your other aproach is to get a faster lens with a larger aperture, which can get really $$$$ for anything with a zoom. Get the flash. It's probably one of the best investment you can get.

Here's a site I found that might help you decide. I know it's pricey, but it's well worth it. It's also a lot cheaper than a super-fast zoom lens.

Ha. That's funny because I worked my way through my Bachelor's degree as a pole dancer in San Diego.

Final question... should I get the 18-200 kit lens or just body? I don't really have any pricey lenses... just basic stuffs.

do you need the lens? What do you usually find yourself wanting when you shoot your XS?

I shoot everything I see. 18-200 seems like it'd give me some options when I'm out walking around.

That is not a bad choice. The 18 - 135 for a starter lens is decent also.

Amazon doesn't have the 18-200 in stock. 18-135 it is. I have a 75-300 already.

LunaZ 05-23-2012 12:13 PM

The current 7D can wirelessly control multiple Canon speedlites as slaves, individually or as groups.

Just more pot stirring, LOL.

I have the 430 and I borrowed a friend's. It works quite well for an inexpensive, portable, multiple flash setup.

Red__Zed 05-23-2012 12:16 PM

my question of the day: Aperture or Lightroom?
