Just messing around with a few shots around the house, with the camera set on CA (Creative Auto, or "Green Square Plus") to see how it behaves.
This camera is light years ahead of my 2003 10D in how quickly it focuses and how well it meters the light of a scene. I guess they've programmed the auto modes with the assumption that the person aiming the camera can't hold it still, ratcheting up the ISO to achieve a faster shutter speed. This results in a fair bit of noise. Nothing that can't be edited out, but I'd rather it wasn't there in the first place.
Time to dive into the manual and start using my camera for real.

Here's another beer from the old camera:

I see you like good beer Luna, +1.

Im a huge beer lover myself, I couldnt count the number of beers Ive tried.

Last night I ordered up a Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX lens and also a Nikkor 35mm 1.8G AF-S DX. Got a wireless remote as well. I was about to blow $200 something on a Manfrotto tripod and realized I need lenses more than a tripod. Gonna be ordering a tripod soon though. My camera bag will now consist of the two lenses mentioned above as well as my Nikkor 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 ED VR AF-s DX and my Ronikon 8mm f3.5 fisheye.

Prime lenses rock. I love my EF 50mm f/1.4 USM. I put it on the new 7D last night.
Stay tuned for more cat pictures. :icon17:

I was so up in the air about choosing either a 35mm or a 50mm, both f1.8. I ordered the 50mm and cancelled it like 5 min later cause I feared it may be a little much for shooting indoors. Do you ever feel that way??

Yes and no. It's not great for shooting the person sitting next to you, but for portraiture, that focal length combined with a crop frame camera puts you at a distance that makes the model comfortable while still filling the frame and providing a lot of detail. About 6' of distance from the model gives you a head and upper torso shot. When I have to use a camera mounted speedlight, I like being able to get a little further away because it softens the effect of the flash (I also use a soft box on my flash).
that's not to say that you can't get close with the 50mm. If you go back and look at the photos I've been posting here, most of them were done with the 50mm mounted on my old 10D. If I could carry only the lens mounted on my camera, the 50mm would be the one I would choose 9 times out of 10 for the subject matter I shoot (models and beer?).

This shot of Max was taken from about 26" away.
I could stand to stop it down a bit as his whiskers go out of focus as they curve towards or away from the camera, but I'm kind of digging the softness these low f-stops are giving me. Plus, a higher stop would mean either a slower shutter speed or higher ISO or both, or adding artificial light.

Here is a shot of Daisy, psycho dog, shot with my 100 - 400 and flash fill. 260mm. 1/250th, f 5.6 (ISO 1000 -- I had been shooting low light and forgot to reset it).

That's nice. Not at all as noisy as what I seem to be getting from ISO 1000... at least not resized down to that size.

I try to keep the editing to a minimum. If wasn't a good shot to begin with, I junk it. As a hairdresser, and specifically, a colourist, the thing I hate to see most is "cheating" with post-production to enhance haircolour. It's usually obvious and I don't know who these people think they're fooling.
Below is a side-by-side of the original and edited images. Cropped, and minor fine tuning of the contrast were about all that were needed. I used a mask to add noise and a grainy texture to the background for a grittier feeling.

Love the Bucket Man shot Luna:tup:

Here is a pic I snapped in the Bahamas back in 2010. I was focusing on the art. When I took the shot I didnt even notice the man had one leg.

Luna and Achemy -- those are nice shots.

I've tooled around with photography for the past year. A month ago I picked up a T3i + a 50mm f/1.8 lens... and today I got to try 'em out.

While my creativity is typically limited to writing, I'm trying to push myself into other fields for the sake of diversity.

CCastro 01-02-2012 03:49 AM

you definitely got the rule of thirds down... also since you have a good idea about composition, try to stay out of auto mode... it's a waste to have a DSLR and use auto

hey guys,

So some of you might know I recently got engaged. I took some pictures of the ring and I figured I'd share it with you guys. But, at the moment I only have them on facebook, so the quality has suffered. Let me know what you think!

Had to drive into Dallas this morning to the municipal court. Got my speeding ticket of 35mph over Dismissed, Big relief. Anyways on the drive down main street on the way home I snapped an HDR at a stop light on my iPhone 4 and edited it too all with the same app.

HDR Pro. A must have for awesome iPhone photos. Hope you guys enjoy

Here is the original. I need to post some full res DSLR shots on here. Maybe I'll get to that today on my lunch break

m4a1mustang 01-06-2012 11:25 AM

Hmmm I like the original better.

Dallaz 01-06-2012 12:44 PM

Yeah the edited one is too grungey (not a word). There's limited filters in that app though and I thought that one suited the scene well

Dammit. Attachment fail, yet another fail for this stupid iPad.
You'll have to wait until I get home to see what I was gonna share with you.
I even bought a nifty CF card reader for iPad.

Greetings from 30K feet, BTW!!!!

LunaZ 01-08-2012 01:17 PM

Nah. Just an interesting shot from the airport.
The view hasn't been very inspiring this flight to warrant pulling the camera out of the bag.

I did the same thing with my ex's ring... over 2 years later, the ring still sits in a box in my closet.
