Hey guys never realized this section of the forum existed!

As far as my setup goes...

Canon T1i

Canon 18-55mm IS (giving to my gf as a starter lens)
Canon 55-250mm IS
Canon 50mm 1.8
Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 (replacing the 18-55)
Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro
Samyang 8mm 3.5 fisheye

I don't do much auto photography(I'd rather be driving the cars than photographing them) but I love nature and wildlife stuff

antennahead 11-26-2010 08:54 PM

I just bought myself a Panasonic DMC-FZ35............ DSLR would be too much for me. I'm looking forward to learning the manual capabilities with it though.

A good start I suppose. Don't be intimidated ny SLR's though. It's not that difficult to learn once you know the basic concepts like ISO, aperture, shutter speed and white balance. The learning curve is well worth it and something you won't regret.

Happy shooting and don't hesitate to ask for any insights.

Thanks. I used to mess around with it in my teens .............. long time ago  I read up and refreshed my memory today on aperture, shutter speed, and ISO............ so I can use some of the cameras manual capabilities. It got good ratings for a "bridge" camera. One thing I intend to do is also take pics with the "intelligent auto" setting, then study the "choices" IA made............. re-take the shot manually and mess with the settings so I can learn firsthand how they all effect each other. Thanks for the offer

Thanks!

The lens bug is a serious disease to catch! Luckily my gf is starting out so it may be a little easier to justify purchases if she sees a reason she "might" use it too

gotcha, i'm actually leaning more towards the sigma f/1.4 50mm lens instead of the canon one. i keep seeing my friends on both sides of the fence get one and have just staggering results...

I have the 50mm 1.8, honestly on a crop body I'm going to be purchasing the Sigma 30mm 1.4 instead of another 50mm. 30mm prime just feels right on the crop just like a 50mm on a full frame..50mm starts to feel way too cramped with that 1.6x factor..

HKYStormFront 12-29-2010 03:52 PM

i bought a new lens today! friend of mine emailed me today saying he was putting up two of his lenses for sale. i got the Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS for $800! :woot: if anyone is interested, he has the 70-200 f/4 L IS for $800 as well. i can get you in touch. this is from the guy i bought my 5D from, also my mentor in photography, he really did teach me everything i know

Xan 12-29-2010 04:52 PM

That's some lens, what are you planning for?

HKYStormFront 12-29-2010 04:54 PM

track shots... the more reach, the better

k20z3 12-29-2010 05:44 PM

I love the 100-400, I definitely want to get one soon for track stuff. I'd recommend the 70-200 to anyone, mine hardly comes off my 40d :)

HKYStormFront 12-29-2010 08:56 PM

yea right now i spend most of my shots using the 28-70 f/2.8 (yes the 28mm, it's the predecessor to the current 24-70 f/2.8) just for the f/2.8 bokeh. on crop body you really have to try hard to get decent bokeh in the background. the 70-200 spends a lot of time on my 7D when i'm shooting track or autox events and the 17-40 is on the rest of the time. i have 3 lenses that i love to use. the 100-400 probably won't be my "go-to" lens unless i'm just in a certain location where i need a lot of reach but it will be nice to have. i may eventually sell the 7D and get the 5D MkIII when it comes out since it has all the AF and speed of 7D but in FF which is why i didn't get the MkII. the MkII is a fantastic camera but i really needed the 7D AF and image processors for what i do with my camera often. the 5D3 will be a great compromise and now i will have that extra reach if i need it...

wilsonp 12-30-2010 05:06 PM

The first review of the 70-300L that I've seen says it is a wonderful lens, possibly better than the 70-200 f/4 for most people. I already have the regular 70-300 and I can't justify the L for hobby purposes, but it apparently has no distortion which would be amazing.

HKYStormFront 12-30-2010 05:11 PM

yea it looks like a really nice lens. if i didn't want a 70-200 f/2.8 L IS II i'd probably want one to replace my 70-200 and now the 100-400. sad thing is i would have extra left over if i sold both of the L lenses i have now (or will soon) and buy the 70-300

I'm in the same mind set as you. I want/need the 7D for what it has that the 5DMKii couldn't offer... hopefully in the next few weeks or so I'll pick one of them up. I want to get rid of my Sigma 24-70 and pick up a Canon one or maybe a nice prime lens.

HKYStormFront 02-07-2011 10:02 AM

got my 100-400 this weekend:

You mentioned going FF....is it worth it to go full frame for your type of work Patrick. Doesn't the "extra" reach, work in your favor on crop sensor cameras? Your basically getting a 640mm reach (35mm equivalent) with your current setup.

HKYStormFront 02-08-2011 09:17 AM

yea mike, i had my 5D for a year and a half and i should have never sold it. i will have plenty of reach with the 100-400 on a FF. most track days i've been using my 70-200 and even then feeling "cramped" towards the 70mm end of the lens on my 7D. i do a good mix of track and still shots and for the stills, i REALLY miss full frame. it makes such a huge difference in the bokeh and how i like to frame my images

GTHAUS 02-09-2011 02:25 PM

^^^ Great lens! Depending on how much track shooting I do this year I'd like to pick one of those up I think. Hoping to pick up the 7D shortly... been putting it off and putting it off for a while haha.

i may be selling mine later this year to get a 5D3 once they come out. it's "low mileage" in perfect condition, can sell with or without grip (though i will keep my 2nd battery if they work with the MkIII)

GTHAUS 02-09-2011 02:35 PM

Selling your 7d? How much you looking to get and how soon/not soon you thinking of moving it? Let me know, I may be interested :)

- Jeremy

HKYStormFront 02-09-2011 02:45 PM

it won't be before the MkIII comes out, probably this fall. and my price will depend on how many clicks i have on it by then. if you haven't gotten one by then i'll be sure to let you know first

Sounds good! :) Hopefully I'll have one by then... but who knows... maybe I'll be extra busy and need another lol Let me know!

So, when are you going to go out and do some peeping...er, track pics with the new lens? Can't wait to see them!

I might also be interested in a used 7D when the time comes. ;)

HKYStormFront 02-09-2011 09:34 PM

why? you have one don't you?

You know, in case I fall in a river at ZDayz again. :roflpuke2:

Or if I need a backup...

HKYStormFront 02-10-2011 09:00 PM

haha ok, i was wondering...

HKYStormFront 04-21-2011 09:06 PM

welp, i decided to part with the lens. i used it for an autox once and found it to be too heavy and cumbersome for my style of panning (by hand, not monopod). i really do like this lens but i don't see myself using it hardly ever and just decided i liked the idea of getting money for it instead. posted it yesterday on craigslist for $1250 OBO knowing i'd get some lowball offers (had one for $1k within 30 mins) and am meeting a guy in the morning to sell it for $1175 http://forums.mycanikon.com/images/smilies/smile.png that will almost completely pay off what i owe on my only credit card, i can't wait to be debt free (truck's paid off too!)

Dsphoto 04-22-2011 10:29 PM

The glass is a tool, the mind makes the images. If you want something lighter look at the 300f4. Good sharp light lens.
