Default 2011 370Z to 2007 Porsche 911?

Any opinions here? I stopped by the porsche dealership with a friend and there is a low mileage 2007 Porsche 911 on the lot. I've been considering moving up to a Viper or newer Vette Z06.... The 370Z fills my need for speed, now its just about getting to own and drive some really cool cars. I can get the porsche for about $6500 cash over and above the trade in value of my 370Z.

Any opinions on reliablity, performance etc? This will not be my DD and neither is my 370Z. We are heading towards the end of summer where I am and I think I can work a great deal.

Looking for opinions and input.

If its a 2007 its a 997.1 (pre facelift) model. My only question would be if its a turbo or not. One other thing to consider is insurance prices. If its a twin turbo, i would say do it in a heartbeat! They are sooo fun to drive and have tons of power, especially if you do a simple tune.

Its advertised as a Porsche 911 Carerra. I'm pretty sure its the 3.6L 325hp model. (6M) of course. I'm interested... but it looks like the 370Z is marginally the better car by performance numbers.... (hp, 0-60, 1/4 mile etc)... I'll likely take it for a spin and decide.

Heres another thing to consider... Aftermarket parts. I sell a ton of stuff for Porsches, and they arent cheap. I mean, compared to parts for a 370 anyway. Manufactures go... "oh, you have a car that was $75,000 new.. Lets make everything more expensive!" But then, on the other hand, you get to tell all your friends you drive a Porsche lol

Based upon pure performance the 911 Carrera is just a shade above the Z in performance. But for the money, I'd rather get the Cayman S. Give it a test drive and decide for yourself.

Also do not dismiss the cost to maintain and repair German cars, it's ridiculous. (And "yes", I speak from personal experience). The cost to insure and maintain a Porsche is substantially more than a Z.

Either way, good luck with your decision

I can't speak for the 2007 Porsche 911, but I did some research on a 2008 Cayman S. I only drive my Z about 6000 miles a year (I prefer my Yamaha FZ8). Here's what I found out; the Porsche is cheaper!
  • With Geico, my insurance is $350 less, yearly.
  • Factory recommended maintenance intervals at dealers in the DC area, about $1000 less over five years.
  • Resell value higher by more than 10%.
  • Better (real world) gas mileage.
  • Longer factory and extended warranty.

Unscheduled repairs would be the wildcard, I suppose. Doesn't matter anyway, my wife totally vetoed the idea .

Even with you taking all the time and effort to make your case, she STILL said no?

By the way.... 350 LESS a year for insurance?! How is that possible? I would have never in a million years thought that.

Depends what you are looking for in a car. 997 was significant improvement over 996. 911 is much more refined car than the Z. And if you learn about Porsches you will find maintenance costs can be managed to reasonable levels. You will become close freinds with Porsche wrecking yards. I replaced a blown m96 motor with a used one with 13000 miles for $2000. Brakes last forever on these cars. You just need to make sure when buying a used porsche to get low mile well maintained car. Better to pay a little more for well maintained low mile Porsche than a poorly maintained car.

old men buy Porsches, young dudes buy Z's, for the most part, so the P cars don't get wrecked as much. When I went from a 350 to a C6, insurance went down $60 per month. Went back up 60 when I got the 370.
