You could also look at new Gen Coupe vs used G37 coupe.

that still makes me laugh. |
Its funny... One time i was harassed on the forum for taking 8 test drives on 5 vehicles before i purchased my G. I was told i was wasting salesguys time. I went back twice on three. The Z, Camaro and genesis coupe 3.8... I ended up with a G37s because i had gotten an $7,000 cash back incentive on the G37s with invoice pricing. Couldn't beat that. 1 year n some later. I was in a 09 370Z. The Z performance kept calling me. The Gencoupe and G BOTH felt equally inferior to the Z as far as driving enjoyment. The other car I had tested was the mustang GT. At the time it was a 4.6, it was laughable compared to every other car on the list. Went back and tested the 5.0. The changes impressed me greatly, but not enough to not purchase a Z.
The only cars i can consider in-line with a Z right now (performance/fun-wise) is the Evo and 135i. I just deviated from the point but... I'd rather test everything twice if i really like it. After I crashed the 09 Z, I was able to add the 5.0, Evo, Porsche Cayman(used) to the list. Test driving cars is the best research. It's crazy to think that someone would actually think i'm wasting salesguys time... lol. I look at it as making sure i spend approx. $40k wisely. |

Unless of course you get test drives like I did when I went to try out the 5.0. Scared the salesman coming out of the driveway so it was just down the street and back. :shakes head: He had the nerve to tell me it was too much car for me (not that I did anything wrong or was anywhere close to losing control of it). Was a good thing I never planned on actually buying it other wise I would have been pissed. |

Korean products are catching up in a lot of industries... notable example is in electronics. Automobile industry is trending that way too. Maybe 10 years from now people will see Hyundai as having the same build quality as Toyota, Mercedes, etc. or maybe even surpass them
|
Yea, that's possible. Both Kia and Hyundai seem to 'copy' design aspects from other car companies and compile them together for their designs.
I haven't been in or driven a new Korean car. Are their engines/drivetrains very nice ? |

The kia Optima is one of my fav cars to drive int hat segment. Despite basically being the same as the sonata, its nicer. The sonata's engine noise is a bit much. Not as well insulated. The New Santa Fe is also really nice right behind the Flex. The problem is still peoples perceptions. My 2006 Sonata v6 has never been to the dealership for issues, nor has it had issues. 100,670 miles over 7 years. Still smooth and responsive and everything works. My 2003 Tiburon v6 i had, never had a problem that i didnt create by messing up something (i learned a hella lot by ******* up that car) For the people who say they will "NEVER" buy a korean car.. are kinda retarded. There was a time people said that about honda, toyota, nissan. Look at them now. Always have to keep an open mind and make a unbiased decision. Hell, soon we might be looking at chinese and Indian cars too. |
Lol I used to say I would never get an American car, now the 2 cars I want next are both American :icon17:

The car in the link plus $3k might get you a better nismo test drive next time your @ the dealer lol... :rofl2: |
I went to test drive an IS-F and the salesman kept asking me personal questions like how old I was, where I worked, what I planned to use the car for, etc. I was like wtf? stfu already
I went to the dealer in my Z... |
This is an isolated artice that popped up from autoguide. But it seems hyundai is considering a turbocharged version of the v6 in the future for a higher end genesis coupe?
Sounds like it may possibly be an IPL fighter... Considering the next generation IPL will be turbocharged and cost a bit more than a GTR. This gives hyundai a chance to captitolize on the gencoupe legacy with a half price ipl/gtr competitor. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...tJWiv3h8_NoO_Q At bargain pricing, I'd even have to consider a Genesis coupe Turbo 6. if it turns out to be 2/3 of a GTR at 50% of the price. It would be worth buying for sure |
Hyundai is just like Toyota in their market strategy. It will work.

AFAIK from Hyundai's previous plans ,they never intended for the v8 to enter the gen coupe.
They did years back have a slight discussion about another sports car to compete with the likes of the vette that would house the v8's. but it wasnt the gen coupe. |
My heart was set on the Z for years, but I did not love it blindly.
Before I bought the Z, I cross shopped many cars - from domestic to imports and I gave the Gen 1 GenCoupe serious thought. At the time, I believe that the 3.8 Track Package was going for around 30k, which is definitely appealing when compared to a base Z since the Genesis came with nav, leather seats, sunroof, rear seats, a trunk, a relatively powerful engine, not bad looking (especially in black) and a very good warranty. But then the test drive came. The handling was ok, the power was decent - it didn't throw you back in the seat like the Z, but my biggest gripe was the gearbox. I think one magazine said it felt rubbery and I couldn't agree more. Ultimately the Gen 1 GenCoupe was an unrefined sports car, which is why I didn't bother buying it. Like many people, my friends were dismissing all the positives of the car by saying it was just a Hyundai. I felt like that's not a good reason for discounting a car, but that's Hyundai brand recognition. Maybe Hyundai means cheap in Korean, but if it doesn't, that's what the general consensus is in the American market. I think that the Hyundai logo is what turns most people off because its like slapping a 99 cents tag on a premium product. If they rebadge the Gen Coupe with the Genesis logo, which is the first mod for most Gen Coupe owners, I feel like they can start to redefine what they stand for and appeal to a broader audience. My Hyundai Experience: Prior to the Z, I leased a Hyundai Tuscon Limited as my dd, which was perfect for what I needed it to do. It had plenty of room, handled well in the winter and was extremely reliable. The car virtually did not need any maintenance and never once hicupped, stalled or failed after 35k miles. After the lease expired, I returned the car back to the dealership. I personally did not mind owning the car, but I did not require an SUV. So based on my experience, I do not view Hyundai as cheap, but more as reliable. One day Hyundai may be a serious contender in the affordable sports car market and maybe I'll own one in the distant future. I just don't like how the fascia's on Hyundai's all look alike (much like what Mistubishi did with the Evo X). Talk about having a hard time differentiating yourself from the cheaper, inferior models. |

But like you said, the handling was more than enough for the street. BUT, then we could argue that the power of a Sentra is also more than enough for the street :icon17: |

I also felt that the handling on the Z was miles ahead of the GenCoupe I tested. Just tighter. The suspension struck me as better on bumps, too, and I tested a Genesis Coupe Track. Both felt equally stiff, but the Z took a bump better.
Now, this was 2010, and the Genesis has most likely improved since its first model year. |

I was on the other lightning lap thread and im quoting what i said there cuz it pertains to this thread... "Anyone notice the 3.13.8 for the gencoupe R-spec & 3.17.5 for the infiniti Gcoupe sport??? Not Good" This is where my thoughts that the gencoupe is slept on comes from. It's performance is good. Having owned the G-37s for a year and having had extensive test drives in the gencoupe. I found I was getting in and out of turns faster than in the G. The G feels a little better doing it. But the Gencoupe accelerator seemed to sprint faster out of a turn. I measure cars on how quickly i can make transistions. The gencoupe seemed to come out of turns better. (maybe it just complimented my driving style more?) I feel most comfortable driving the Z between the 3. The Z is just dialed in perfectly for my Driving style (with VDC off). But the Z is NOT a competitor in this segment. |

Ive seen tons of people judge how good a car is in the corners based on how it feels or how fast it goes based on how it feels. (recent arguement regarding 300zxtt vs 370z stock for stock) people said that they have ridden in both and the 300zx feels faster.. But things don't work that way. The way the z34 accelerates feels very diff. My GTO felt like it had this punch and felt fast.. but it wasn't really lol. The 370z has this smooth acceleration so you dont think its fast but its deceiving. same sort of feel applies to cornerings at times. The gen coupe is a bit numb, you dont feel as in control and you dont get the feedback so you may feel less confident in it and thus feel its slower. similarly.. my frikin versa is short and light and gets tossed in every corner i take and feels fun.. but its SLOW AS ****. |
