370Z vs facelifted Genesis Coupe 2012 3.8

So, for next model year will be Z less powerfull in comparison. Still faster and better. But 350 BHP will be standard for 3.8 engine in Genesis Coupe. And yes, no high revving engine like that one in our beloved cars.

Parkerman 11-23-2011 06:32 AM

The facelift on the Gen Coupe is like Micheal Jackson's plastic surgery... It looks horrible.

dawudih 11-23-2011 06:35 AM

It looks like a g37

Maila87 11-23-2011 07:03 AM

Not so good suspension and body rigidity is missing. But in comparison to power. Nissan, we are high revving, where is more power? VVEL looks like limit :(

Thechidz 11-23-2011 07:28 AM

why do our engines rev so high? I drive hard and at times I'm nearly redlining

And I don't care. :icon17: I'm not a fan of their facelift. Was better before. They needed to fix the privacy glass on the rear side glass.

It doesn't rev that high. Coming from Honda (S2K/Si), our 7500rpm limit is laughable compared to 8800rpm (or higher if you get Hondata tune).

In other words, VTAK y0! :happydance:

Yeah, those things rev! Makes me miss my little iVtAk commuter!

Hell even my lowly 5.0h revs to 7,500 with my tune. :p

On the topic of the Genesis Coupe: I don't think we have any test data out for the refresh yet so we should reserve judgement. It does look a little odd with the new face, but we'll see how the new engine revisions and any suspension changes turn out before we know exactly how it will compete against the Z.

With 350hp/300lb-ft, though, it's close enough to be a driver's race in a 1/4 mile drag. Put a average-mediocre Z driver against an average-good Genesis driver and it will probably be close!

If you're in the market for a G37, I think the Gen coupe would be the better choice. As far as the 370z, it's still a sleek looking 2 seater sports car, and the Gen coupe isn't. The Gen will always be a more practical every-day car, it just depends what you're looking for in a car.

The genesis is a mish mash of a bunch of cars, the Sedan looks like a BMW from the rear and a benz from the front. The pre-facelift Gen coupe did resemble the G a lot, especially on the street, not in a still photo. Don't forget the new gen G37 is coming out soon, so you never know, they still might look alike again.

jeez, tires and an engine? blatant ripoff of the model t

TypeOne 11-23-2011 09:56 AM

I'm actually excited about the new Gen Coupe. I hope its way better than the first one... not saying it's going to happen, but you never know, it actually might not be that bad.

I like the smaller, Veloster very much... it's a neat little hatchback that offers good value. Another thing that I'm starting to like about Hyundai is the fact that they aren't scared to put power in any of their cars. It was mentioned the Veloster will be offered with the 2.0T option that the Gen coupe has. 270hp in one of those and it's going to be a value that not many cars in the class can keep up with.

The new Civic Si is a terrible "upgrade" for the 2012 year. I hope Honda get's their head in the game and brings back some of the features that made the older models so special.

I'm excited about the new G, too. I really liked the 1st one. Don't care for the current gen. I have high hopes for the 3rd, though.

Honda... they are done for me. They've fallen into a rut. All of their cars suck from an enthusiast's standpoint.

The new 3.8 comes with direct injection, as it does in the current Genesis Sedan. The new 2.0T isn't the Sonata GDI motor, but just an uprated RS Turbo with better intercooler and I believe larger turbo/boost.

We know the Z is arm candy, but you want one of these behind closed doors..l:icon17:

RiCharlie 11-23-2011 02:55 PM

I was given a Genesis to test drive for a full 24 hours and during that time i discovered several things: one is that the car rode like a rock..i just thought of steel tires on rough concrete..with a stiff suspension...In fact I hated it when it was anywhere but on a smooth open highway and even then it was not pleasant

Also the engine constantly reved at 4000 and more even when i was at 40 mph!!!..that seems like something was wrong with this demo.

And when I applied the brakes the car pulled strongly to one side. Dealer said he should have corrected that...

Now both of these problems may have been things that could have been solved by the dealer ...but it tells me and reminds me that there is more to evaluating a car than just sheer horsepower....and for my money the reputation, proven quality and reliability and the balanced approach to what they produce means I will put my money on Nissan..beautiful advertisements and horsepower ratings for Hyundai dont mean a damn to me...Overall quality is key...

TypeOne 11-23-2011 04:11 PM

I drove close to a dozen Gen Coupes. Nearly every trim, every model... over the course of a few months.

I ended up spending more money on my Z and I'm OK with that. It's not all about price guys.

If you mean Veloster outside. It is really gorgeous car for that bargain. But the ride quality is worse (and many times described in Car magazines) than Golf IV (in US you know it as Rabbit, I guess). So it is just nice car, with poor performance. The Gen Coupe is for me really heavy and slow car. But I mean before Facelift. 3.8 which can pumps out just enough power to 240 km/h is not really weak. My 2.0TFSI OOOO TT mk2 with 200hp had 245 km/h (one time 260+ on GPS). Also 6.4s is similar to my old Audi.

Yes, I use my Z as DD and many times I missed rear seats. But love the design and performance! BTW: Gen Coupe comes with 19's as standard! Too big for me:driving:

What are the differences between high rev and low rev? How does it affect the car's performance? I know diesel car has low rev and the RX-8 has the highest rev for rotary engine cars.

Someone told me a long time ago that they like the low rev because you get to max speed faster than high rev.

Nick911sc 11-23-2011 06:56 PM

Are you guys positive that this is a legit version of the facelifted gen coupe? About a year and a half ago my gf's brother(korean) Showed me "leaked" facelift photos of the genesis that looked identical to these that had surfaced on a bunch of korean autoblogs and the news. Fast forward.. They were hoaxed pictures by some kid online and hyundai denied all connection to them.

Kenny 11-23-2011 06:59 PM

I never really considered the Genesis Coupe to be a serious 370Z competitor.

When I test drove one a few months ago when I was in the market; they felt like soul-less gutless automobile. It's not a bad looking car from the side and rear, but the front looks a bit too "cheeky" for my taste. This new redesign gives it a more aggressive mature look, but at the same time it comes off a bit fake. Kinda like a EVO X rip-off.

Anyhow, like the Japanese in the 1980s/90s, the Koreans have come a long way in car design and manufacturing capabilities. Would I buy one? Probably not anytime soon. Could they get better in the future? From the looks of things, they seem to be going in the right direction.
