Smart or not doesn't really have any bearing. Obviously the most financially responsible way to go about it is to wait and get the best deal you can. But if I was rich and could blow money at will I'd pay markup just to have it it right nao!!!

m4a1mustang 06-08-2012 12:39 PM

Sort of like my habit to apply overnight shipping to anything I buy. :icon17:

Sorry, I guess I equate smart buying with patient and frugal buyers. If I waited three months and paid 15k less for the same car, I'd feel I got the better deal.

You did, but for that three months I was doing burnouts in your driveway going:

Man, it's no secret that I've wanted the GT500 since it was announced. Well the first ZL1 GT500 comparison article is out and it really makes the choice harder.

And I'm sure the GT500 will do even better, out west with long straight highways the Shelby seems to be the car, but on roads like the dragons tail the ZL1 looks to be better.

like any car, numbers shouldn't matter. its which puts the bigger smile on your face and which you could live with.

Red370 06-13-2012 02:48 AM

I bet that ZL1 owner was pissed.

To be honest, I could give a shyt about how well a car handles on a road with tight curves, pure BRUTISH grunt is what puts a smile on my face, and in that aspect, the GT500 will win EVERY time. Also, the 3.31 gearing is for top speed, throw a 3.73 or a 4.10 gear in the rear end and I think the race would have been much closer.

Lemers 06-13-2012 08:24 AM

Actually the ZL1 owner was thinking...give me a curve right now.

See I'm a handling guy first and a power guy second. It's cool to do both really well with one platform.

So you'd take the ZL1 over the GT500?

No he'd most likely get a GT500 and improve the handling with aftermarket parts if necessary.

m4a1mustang 06-13-2012 08:40 AM

I would never buy a Camaro.

Lemers 06-13-2012 08:43 AM

When I get mine you're gonna have to give me so pointers on good parts to improve the handling.

I plan on the SVTPP unless it's found not to provide any advantage.

So I will need to improve things other than shocks.

m4a1mustang 06-13-2012 08:48 AM

Honestly there really isn't anything I'd change on the '13 with the SVTPP. I'd just leave everything alone. The Bilstein electronic dampers are good.

Lemers 06-13-2012 09:22 AM

Sway bars, strut tower braces, and I thought you do something else to improve handling.

GT500 has big sway bars, strut tower brace, etc. The Bilstein electronic dampers are one of the main reasons you get the SVTPP option to begin with.

If I bought a '13 GT500 there really isn't anything I'd be changing. I'd keep it unmolested.

If I bought a '11 or '12 on the other hand I would consider doing a few things.

skeptical shado is skeptical, although I have no doubt that you wouldn't mod the car.

If I had a '11 or '12 GT500 I can tell you the first thing I'd do is take it to Excessive (my Mustang shop) and have them swap the pulley and re-tune. 550hp is not enough. 650 is pretty good, though. :icon17:

I don't know if anyone posted this link, but I found it to be and interesting read.

2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 vs. 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Comparison Test

Lemers 06-13-2012 10:21 AM

I already posted that

m4a1mustang 06-13-2012 10:24 AM

I'd like to see the two cars on a real track with a professional driver ala the ZL1/Boss test.

Definitely think the GT500 would fare much better with more rubber. The ZL1 has so much more contact patch. Ford did get their LC right, though, because in the right hands the '13 is pretty sick in the 1/4 mile.

However as a daily driver GTR would smack this new GT500 off the line in most street scenarios. Not saying racing but you know fun little sprints off the line on wide open roads with no traffic. I have to laugh as I used to pull up next to big hot GT500s at stop lights in my AWD Mazdaspeed 6 gt and drop the clutch right at torque sweet spot at 2700 rpm and my car would jump off line with no wheel spin. gT500 drivers would be squealing tires behind me and not catch me until middle of second gear. Then they would want to do stupid stuff to prove their cars were faster.

These over 500 hp Mustangs are just stupid. I guess if you live for Drag racing a at the track it would be ok? ....but Really? 600 + hp in piece o crap mustang? I know it's been done for years but why not focus on making the car handle? Pull weight out etc.

ford is really disappointing me.

m4a1mustang 06-13-2012 11:23 AM

Street racing discussion is not allowed.

See 2011 Mustang 5.0, then Boss 302, and especially Boss 302 Laguna Seca. Lap times at Laguna Seca will show proof of said handling.

Let's do a quick off the line sprint just for fun :)

As for the story, I call BS. I've never seen a streetable Mazda 6. Did you detune it? How would you even register it?

Lemers 06-13-2012 07:36 PM

Maybe he was racing against people who didn't know they were racing. I mean how many GT500 drivers would exspect to be challenged by a Mazda 6?
