At least they are alive.

There was an incident a couple years ago where two fine gentlemen decided to street race straight through the middle of town next to the college (so very busy section with cars and lots of pedestrians). A third car with a group of four people pulled out from the Taco Bell about a half mile from the racers. Problem was, the racers were up to speed and one of them plowed straight into the third car. If memory serves, all but 1 died from the third car. Can't remember if the racer lived.

There was another incident about a yearish before that where again, two people were lined up a light for a little street racing. This time next to the Wal-Mart. The spot is "ideal" for this type of thing because the street goes from two lanes to one lane about a quarter mile down the road. So, light turns green and they take off. As one of them crosses through the intersection they are speared by an old lady running the red light. The kids car is all but cleaved in half. The kid is dead.

So while those fines, jail sentences, and having to pay for multiple vehicles is pretty steep. At least they get the chance too. Others are not so lucky.
