jlt will prob be your best best as far as intakes, and as far as exhaust goes...depending on if you go off road pipe or catted will make a huge difference...axel backs do nothing for performance

So far from what I have found the only exhausts that don't drone are the Borla Touring and Sport, FRPP Touring and Sport (same mufflers as the Borlas, just rebranded), or the GT500 mufflers. |

On average I would say Borla is higher quality than Flowmaster. Some of Flowmaster's systems use aluminized steel which is more susceptible to rusting than stainless. But Flowmaster has improved quality over the years. |
you get what you pay for... amiright?

The good thing about Borla is they do a lot of R&D for each exhaust system they build. Whether it be for the 370, 5.0, Corvette, anything... A lot of companies just have generic mufflers they just fab pipes up for. Borla will design all new stuff for each new car if they need to.
|
Interesting.... I will have to listen to some borla samples on the 5 oh

This is what they sound like with the stock H-pipe: I don't have any good videos with the FRPP X pipe (which maintains the stock cats), but here's the Borla Sport cat-back, which replaces the factory H with an X and maintains the stock cats. It also deletes the stock resonators: |
flowmasters and muscle cars go together like America and apple pie. (mmmm pie :yum:)
When I had my '70 Chevelle, I loved the sound with my flowmaster exhaust system, just sounded "right". |
TBH I never was a fan of the Flowmasters. I preferred the more high-pitched European tones, which is why I've run X pipe and straight-through mufflers on all of my cars. You'll never catch me with an aftermarket H pipe and chambered mufflers. ;)
|
So Steve you have the Ford Racing Performance Parts axle backs, with X pipe, correct? LOL, took me a while to figure out what FRPP means. I was looking at Borla's site, so is that the same as the S-type axle back then?
|
Yeah, from everything I have read and researched, the FRPP Sport = Borla S-Type and FRPP Touring = Borla Touring. Of course David Borla will never admit they are the same. When I talked to him about it he danced around the question but acknowledged that Borla did indeed make the FRPP mufflers for the 5.0.
I do have the FRPP X pipe, but for whatever reason fitment is really bad. It was a PITA to install. I actually need to have the Cat-to-X connections welded if I want to keep it; I've got a sizeable exhaust leak at the moment. |

So any benefits to ordering/going beyond the axle backs? They sounds fantastic with just the axle backs. Does ordering the cat backs just give you an x-pipe? And where do you recommend buying them for best price? |
Welp, decided to head up to the Frankfurt Auto Show yesterday with my speed adrenaline junkie Fraulein in tow, got a chance to open the Stang up on the way, I pegged it out completely, car is definitely held back due to drag issues but I reached 160 quick, fast and in a hurry. I recorded a little 80 to 130 pull in 5th gear if yall wanna see it. Of all the cars there, there were a few that definitely stood out.

Axlebacks obviously are just for sound. Power gains from swapping the mufflers are absolutely nada... zilch... nothing! The real gains with the 5.0 are when you replace the cats with HFCs or just get rid of them outright. The Cat-back is going to give you all of the piping from the cats back. In the case of the Borla S-Type cat back, the H is replaced by an X and the factory resonators are deleted. In my case, I don't care about squeezing any extra power out of the car through the exhaust. I wanted to keep the stock cats. The only change I wanted was with the sound, and by swapping the mufflers and X pipe I could achieve that goal rather easily. If you don't mind spending the money, and if you want it a little louder (due to the deletion of the resonators), I would consider getting the Borla S-Type cat-back. You get your X pipe and you replace all of the piping back to the mufflers. FWIW, though, the gains from just a catback are minimal. Most come from the headers and cats. There are a TON of options out there, so just take your time and sift through them all! @Red, good stuff! |
Awesome pics Red! Love that fvcking Evora!
