Porsche Cayman
Hello again everybody,
Its been a long, long time since i have posted on here, hope everybody is doing well! Anyway, I am still enjoying my 2009 Monterrey Blue 370Z with the polished aluminum wheels. However, I am thinking seriously about trading it in for a Porsche Cayman. Was just wondering if anybody had any thoughts on the Cayman or if anybody has had one or driven one. Thanks, and I am looking forward to your comments. Mike |
The car is well received here. It costs 50% or more. You will also get hammered on the trade in with your Z.
|
Test drive the Cayman and figure out if it's worth it to you.
For some people it will be, for other it won't. |

Porsche
I would consider a used Carrera or Boxter.
My big boss bought a Cayman. If he ever sold that would be a solid choice. If I could afford a Porsche, I'd be driving one. Good luck and don't forget pics. |
I think the p-car is a natural step after the Z. But for me im probably going to get something else.
|
Cayman? No. Cayman S? Do it.
|
I agree, I would not even consider a Cayman unless it is the S. While the base Cayman has impeccable manners, fit, and finesse, it would be a step down from the Z in my opinion.
|
Agree with the Cayman S as a Cayman is a performance step downwards (quality step up obviously). The S is a mild step above the Z in performance NUMBERS, but a huge step in finesse and quality. The old "Caymans/Boxsters aren't Porsches" arguement is tired and stupid. The Cayman would trounce a 911 if they'd just give it the same engine.
If you have the cash, go for a test drive. There are good deals on used Cayman S's all over the place too. |
Honest, never buy sports car USED.
If you cant afford, get a Cayman. If you have money, go with S. |

That said, if I already had a Z I wouldn't trade it in on a Cayman. The cars are too similar and the Cayman is just too expensive to really justify the trade. I looked at the two cars when I was in the market for a sports car and yes, the Cayman is the better car all around. Better handling, better feel, better engine, better quality. The Z looked better, though, and was MUCH MUCH MUCH cheaper while still delivering a similar driving experience, so I went with that. I just coulnd't justify dropping 60+k on a new Cayman S when I could get a Z (which looked better to me) for under $40k brand new. Not to mention the Z is much cheaper to maintain. It just isn't as refined as the P-car is, but obviously I was willing to deal with that for several thousand dollars less. |

A Cayman probably whips a Z around most tracks, but as Steve said, I wouldn't want to pay to maintain one. yikes.

but I hate porsches. they look outdated/overpriced and too expensive to maintain. looks like I really don't like german car brands. I don't like BMW,audi, mercedes except for their hyper cars/porsche. im more for japanese/british cars aston martin :yum:, jaguar cars like the XJR and so on. though my most favorite car brand is still lamborghini. |

I'm not worried about most of these categories. The only one that concerned me is the Maintenance category. I was thinking there might be some HUGE fee (say $2,000) for maintenance about every 12,000 miles or so. The other things listed on these charts are normal day to day stuff that i dont really even worry about.
Thanks for the links. Mike |

Fine. You win, Porsches are all inexpensive to own and maintain. German parts are cheap.

The oil changes were really not that bad compared to some of the maintenance. Even if you did the work yourself, the parts were out of control... |

I am going to the Porsche dealership this saturday. Can anyone give me some tips on what to say, ask, etc?
Mike |
I went to the dealership yesterday and the salesman and i took a test drive in a Cayman. Awesome car, incredible handling.
Anyway, afterwards back at the dealership i told the salesman what color(s) i would prefer and he said they might be hard to find. I asked him if Porsche only had a geographic area to dealer trade with (say the midwest) or if they could get a Porsche from anywhere (the entire U.S) and he said all over. Then......he says if they have to go too far there would be transportation costs incurred. Do any of you guys know if this is normal? If they have to ship a Porsche from, say Florida or California, to Indiana should i have to pay to have it shipped? Mike |
sounds right to me.. you could always find the one you want and fly out and drive it home

That's what I would do. You get the exact car you want and a perfect chance to get to know it :) |
if they want the sale, they will eat the transportation cost..
I live in NoDak, in the middle of BFE and they had to dealer trade from colorado to get my Nismo in MB |
I've never been a Porsche fan but I really like how the Cayman looks. I like the proportions, doesn't look bloated. I would get the Cayman r. The 911 isn't much more but I just think the Cayman looks better. I will wait and see how the 2013 Cayman looks, I've seen the prototype and it looks bigger. I won't be trading in the z because I need a reliable daily driver. So who has a Cayman and enjoys it?

If you want a weekend track car, a base C6 'vette from '08 up would blow your mind. If you want a status symbol or a comfy daily, then why talk about using your Z for a DD? I'm not seeing the reasoning behind this. Yes, I bet a Cayman is a lot more refined than a 370Z regarding a few things, but I'm just not seeing the value equation working out very well. |
