Crap, we've been one-upped by Hyundai! (Literally)
Jalopnik: Obsessed With The Cult Of Cars

Too bad they don't offer that new V8 in the coupe, that would be... interesting. |
yah, and that genesis sedan is actually better looking than benz or lexus at the moment... :ugh2:
they should really rebadge and differentiate from the hyundai brand. i know their American ceo was saying they will keep genesis under hyundai to improve overall image of their bread-butter cars but man.... i dont want to be explaining to everyone why i bought an expensive hyundai each time. |
I really like the way the Genesis coupe feels while driving but it is definitely not as refined or as driver focused as the 370z. They also have a weight penalty over the Z and until the interior quality improves significantly, I don't think it is going to overtake the Z anytime soon.
/fanboi commentary |
**** that ive had my genesis coupe for 4 months and am trading it for a 370z.
since I drove this thing of the lot I have regretted not just nutting up and getting a Z. not near as performance oriented as the Z, 6 speed is a ******* joke in this **** box, all the owners are ricers, and its not near as nice looking exterior or interior. P.s it may have 1 more HP but it will still be half a second slower quarter mile, and a quater second or slower 0-60 no worries boys, be glad you got a z |
I think there's still some issues to be worked out with their cars, but Hyundai is only a couple years away from having a truly legitimate contender as a sports car.
|
Quote:
Can't blame them, they still have a ways to go in terms of percieved image, so a true sports car may also not have been received as well. |
Quote:
You release the current 5.0 mustang in other market condition, and there would be a six month wait. The 370 was a huge improvement over the 350, and sales tanked.... |
yeah so imagine what hyundai would have had to fight in terms of pre-concieved notions of quality if they were to have done it now.
but i will say my 06 sonata LX (fully loaded for the time) has been perfect since i got it. never needed to go to dealership and everything works perfectly well. Was also 9k cheaper than the camry similarly equipped. So they are def on their way. |

BUT, glad there will be another Z in AZ!! |
Quote:
the first week with my genesis coupe I had it in the dealer getting my driver side front wheel bearing replaced. LOL |
Quote:
mom had a honda accord 2001 wheel bearing went back in about 3k miles. overall the honda was the worst car our family has had in about 20 years. **** happens man, not necessarily reflective of the entire company. |
Quote:
sorry that was a little ragerific, but until you've owned a genesis coupe you just wouldn't understand the disappointment ;) |
Quote:
With every car its a hit or miss.... and a little bit of good or bad luck on the owners side lol |
Quote:
either way like others said gratz on getting a 370z whenever you do! |
Quote:
I think that a less aggressive car is probably easier to work with, which is why most people have better experiences with stuff like the Sonata, vs the Genesis. I'm hoping they merit a serious consideration on my next car purchase. |
Quote:
I do like it, But I like really agressive driving cars and this is just not an agressive driving car. and the interior, while nicer then expected still isnt up to par when compared to a 370z thank you! I plan on purchasing one by the end of next month.(still waiting on wrx accident to get settled so I can have a hefty down payment) |
My main complain about the Gen coupe is the transmission. Every one that I have ever driven has been terrible to shift. Everything else aside, I didn't buy one because of that.
The gearbox of my Z is legendary smooth... like butta... :-P |
I do find it interesting that the Genesis is going with direct injection for its mid cycle refresh, that could give some additional weight to the 2012 370z getting direct injection as well.
|
Quote:
The sloppy shifting in the Z has been one of the biggest complaints about it. I almost didn't buy the thing because the shifter feels like a wet noodle. |

Test drove a 2010 Gen Coupe. Mushy like a boat. It's got kick and a little bit of style (although personally I think it's ugly as hell, not to mention Hyundai loves to steal design cues from other cars), but it's way too soft and does not make decent power for its displacement (in 2010 anyway). IIRC the first model of the Genesis Coupe had the 2.0 turbo and the 3.8 V6, and the V6 made 308 horses or so. The interior was also terrible, almost 350Z terrible. Lots of plastic and vinyl paneling. Heavy, too.
All in all the Z will always be a better choice because they've got a 30+ year pedigree. Nissan also competes in the JCTG, er, I mean, the SuperGT so you can expect some nice things to trickle down from a history in competitive motorsport. |
I have the choice and I think I'd take a used Z over a the Genesis but only because I'm paying cash. If I was financing I'd take a much closer look at the Genesis. I like the way they look and what they offer but.... theres a Z with name on it.

I'm trading KDM BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
I've driven both v6 gen and Z coupes. Both automatics. I really like the gens handling and I think for the price, its fit and finish is above average in its price range. BUT, that 6at is garbage. It can't hold gears like the 7at. Its not free revving. In other words the ecm makes sure it shifts like 500rpm before
Redline. Another issue I find is from 80 to around 100-105mph it gets really sluggish. Then suddenly bursts with a load of torque and the ecm is really intrusive on the torque. What I love about the gen is it has a better lsd and the brembos are top notch in performance. But the gen can't come close to duplicating that exotic drive experience the Z provides. The Z is an unexplicably incredible machine for the price. I would like to see nissan as a whole on all models step into the 21st century when it comes to features though. Lastly, I know the gencoupe is faster than my altima. But because its tranny is so crappy. It feels slower. When you make a sports car. You gotta have the sport factor no matter which tranny u buy. The Z has created a slushbox that if someone who didn't know drove it? They would think its a dct. Too many companies try to make sports cars and neglect the auto. (Mazda is king of auto neglect). I wouldn't say hyundai neglected ythe 6at. But they didn't R&D that well. If hyundai wants to compete. It needs 3 things. 1. Better transmissions 2. Better ECM/ECU 3.Wider tires on track and Rspec models. If those things were improved? Nissan might feel some heat? Without these changes? The gen can get 380hp and it will still be inferior... let's see what 2012 brings???? |
:rofl2: I like how this has turned into a serious discussion...
|
Not too worried about Genesis Coupe having the same power since it weighs 400lbs more than a Z.
|
I'm not going to lie. Their new products have a lot of eye appeal.
|
I'm just impressed with how fast they went from "Who?" to what they are now.
|
Maybe this one will be as fast as they made the first one out to be. I remember seeing reports with titles like "watch out Z" or "Mustang Killer" LMAO, that didnt work out like planed huh Hyundai?

The genesis sedan is getting a 429hp 5.0 R spec model. Wonder if it will make it to the coupe?
|
no matter how much horsepower or how fast the hyundai will ever go the fact is that its still just a hyundai...you cant really brag saying that you own one of them haha
|
Quote:
Unless there is a total redesign for the coupe then no. Hyundai orginally wanted to put the V8 in the coupe, but it did not fit. |
