Associating cars with one group or another is pretty silly.

Admittedly, I make a lot of "mustang is for rednecks" jokes, but it's just me being silly.

It's just funny to me because I am the antithesis of all of the jokes you make, which are always hilarious. :bowrofl:

I agree with a lot of your points, many are ones I have made in the countless 370 vs. 5.0 debates. I'm not sure what Mustang you drove, base suspension or Brembo package, but in either case the stock shocks/struts are the limiting factor on the stock suspension. You'd probably be really surprised at how much a difference a proper set of shocks/struts or coils will make on one of these cars. I'd venture to guess you'd be pretty pleased with the feel of a Brembo package 5.0 on Koni yellows and Steeda sport springs... much better control. I'd actually be pretty interested in your thoughts on the Boss if you get a chance to get behind the wheel of one on track.

But that's really beyond the point. It's still not going to "feel" like a sports car because like you said, it really isn't. It might put down the numbers and get lumped into that sports car performance category, but it won't feel quite like a Z or a Cayman.

It's a different driving experience and it all comes down to preference, like you said. I'm just glad there are still people out there willing to discuss this kind of stuff maturely!

I do suspect the 2014 redesign will be somewhat of a game changer. If what Ford is saying is right, we're looking at a smaller, lighter (250lbs or more) Mustang with a direct-injected 5.0 and IRS. Should be interesting.

I know a guy on the Ford SUspension team who works on Mustang development. They have come a long way and they do get to several tracks to test setups including Laguna Seca. But they still are over coming overly front weight baised car with a single axle. Dont get me wrong its a great car but dynamically its a bit porky. Any doubts? Just watch Mustang come over corkscrew at Laguna Seca. Its not pretty.

The Z while nose heavy is much more composed. Yes the tons of money thrown at Mustang Grand Am cars have cured some of the ills but they still get real ugly to drive when you get into features where elevation changes quickly in a turn. Drivers have to "billy bob" the cars a bit. On tecnical tracks mustangs can be a handful.

Watch the VIR race this May. I think the Mustangs will have a new freind. AM Performance team has really done a great job of sorting out their 370Z race car. Found this video of a LS1 V8 powered Miata race car chasing them during testing at a local race. Look at how rock solid the Z is in and out of turns. While both BMW and Miata have more power the braking and in turn dymamics of the Z are far better. Also impressive as the Z is on hard skinny race slicks used in the Grand Am series. My car has benefited setup wise from the AM Performance race car. Spring choice was directly influenced from data collected from the race car.

I definitely wish AM the best and would like to see them up front soon, but I have a feeling it's still going to be a BMW and Mustang show this year.

Nope that's not a lapping car. But the car literally was finished day before they left for Barber with no testing! Oh wait they tested! Lol!

YouTube - AM Performance 370Z Grand Am Race Car on the Street

It ran 3 days straight with no issues two weeks ago in 80 degree weather. With a lot more work on suspension and motor this past week. let's just see how they do at VIR Mustang boy.:happydance:

m4a1mustang 04-26-2011 11:09 PM

We'll see indeed! Trust me, I wish them success and want to see them do well just like everyone else here. But I've been a race fan long enough to know that it takes a long time for a startup team to start running up front in a competitive series!

Qualifying 19th in an untested car by a new team not indication of platform potential? Car was advancing in race before overheating issues. Just saying give the car a chance.

I never said it didn't have any potential. But you seem to think they are going to be right up at the front at the next race, which is extremely optimistic. I'm just trying to be more realistic. I don't expect them to be running up front and contending for the win in their second race out... that's just not typical for a new team/car in any competitive series, and the Continental Tire series is fairly competitive!

Point out once where I dismissed the car. I never did. I'm just being realistic here. This is a brand new operation for Christ's sake. It's going to take some time.

And as you should very well know, in professional racing the car is only half the battle. You've got to have the team. And a lot of luck! Hell, only about 75% of the time does the fastest car win a Sprint Cup race... if the racing gods are on your side you don't necessarily have to be the best that day to end up in victory lane. :D

You guys are going to need to stop with the civil disagreement here. We either need an all-out flame war, or we are going back to the derail by gheyness approach.

Because I work so hard to make money for this family and support all of your nursing school, which never seems to end I might add, I feel like I am entitled to spend time driving when I want to. I certainly don't want to spend it with you after a long days work. You can't even be bothered to make a nice meal for me once a week. One of these days, Dan... straight to the moon!

I def. see them in the top 10 just because its a Z , which is gods chariot and God being Brian Lock.
Is he driving it or the other dude or both in this series? I saw him last year at Redline driving the GTR. Seemed to be a hell of a driver.

Say what? I have fondled both the GT500 and the 370Z touring and have to call you out on that one. They are comparable in quality, but I give the 370Z ergos, mainly for shifter/center console reasons.

Davey 04-27-2011 05:40 AM

I honestly don't even understand how you would cross-shop these two cars. IMO completely different things.

Now, I'm not saying the Mustang doesn't handle or the 370 doesn't have a good power/weight ratio, they're just not really the same sort of car.

I will say the '11 Mustang got me to look at a Mustang, which is more than any Ford has done in a long time. It's a good car and they'll sell a bunch of them.

The reason for my post was the wife wants to trade a 08 G37 for a new 11 Z but you cant get the Nismo with nav or heated seats. The other problem is most dealers have not stock. Nissan site is also confusing trying to figure out options packages too. She is thinking about the lcar with sport and lux package.
