Bench racing FTW!

What's fun is today me and ZCarMan were parked next to each other at the local sports car club meet in the midst of Ferraris and Vipers and Corvettes and we were not talking about which was better, the 5.0 or the 370Z, or which one would pick up chicks the easiest. Nah... we were just hanging out talking cars and enjoying the weather!

Drive whatever the hell makes you happy. Don't worry about what anyone else is doing. You don't have to constantly compare your car with others just to justify why you bought it. Does it put a smile on your face every time you start it up to go for a drive? That's why you bought the damn car!

If you can't do that you'll NEVER be happy!

esfourteen 04-24-2011 12:48 PM

The new GT handling is certainly close to ours, though it probably won't feel as light and nimble given the weight difference. From the actual track results were seeing im sure it still corners great.

It is. But the 5.0 and Z are not super cars. :icon17:

I have no real experience with the M3, but...

When I went to the BMW dealership looking at them, the sales rep INSISTED! that he crank one. In the showroom. I told him not to, begged him not to piss off his co-workers. NO matter. He cranked it.

First, it rattled and tapped like crazy (normal for an M3 until it warms up, I am told). Second, it reeked (new car thing? I used to work at a Ford dealer and NONE of our new cars stank up the showroom), and stunk up the whole showroom.

Anyway, I found it all rather unique.

A diff of .04 G is pretty huge though, especially given how bad the understeer in the z is from the factory-- although the undersized mustang tires do play a role.

Ford has a bad habit of crippling their cars with peg-legs. The BOSS does a lot better, though, something like 74mph Slalom and 1.01G on the skidpad. A lot of proof that tires are the weak point.

m4a1mustang 04-24-2011 06:08 PM

Haha, that is true. This car is very under-tired. I am going to be replacing the 255 width PZeros with 275 width NT-05s later this summer and suspect that is going to make quite a difference.

the cars have a different look going from them. the rustang is more of a BA car and the Zed is more of a sleek and sporty car. but man, a mustang with the right exterior mods and a good loud/sound exhaust is going to show up any Z IMO.

under $40k

within a budget

the Mustang GT and 370Z are both great choices

the Z looks better

the Mustang GT is faster

OMG! I made it to the end of the thread... for now.

I'm honestly impressed with the 5.0 after watching the video with the M3 vs 5.0. It seems like all the muscle/sport cars out now are producing crazy amounts of hp and getting very good mpg. It seems like it is a pretty good time to be in the market for any sports car.

I'm sure this is what the V8 M3 owner in this picture was thinking when he was passed by a stock powered Nismo. We were turning nearly identical times all weekend long in time trial series. He was on DOT R tires. He was slightly faster in straight line but my corner entry and exit speeds were faster.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_w...0/JR1N7801.JPG

Something test results don't reveal well are true track dynamics of a given car. The 370z Nismo on JRZ coil overs and upgraded brakes runs into and out of turns with the best of the best in similar hp to weight. There were very few street cars able to lose me in the turns. The other thing that I noticed is that at speeds over 75 mph the Nismo cuts through the air better than most cars. the aero bodywork seems to allow the less powerful Nismo hang with higher HP bricks.

That's an awesome pic man, and great points about track dynamics as well

m4a1mustang 04-25-2011 06:41 AM

Shamu, the thing about those amatuer and semi-pro track events is the difference in lap times isn't always the car, but sometimes is the size and material composition of ones balls. ;)

You provide the scientific scale and the calipers and then we'll compare. We also need a few members for qualitative analysis... I nominate b1ades and Red_Zed.

Going to call you out on that. Totally false at 75mph. There are many ways you can justify having bought the NISMO, but this is not one of them.

The Z is one of the most aerodynamic cars in it's class. Despite it's underwhelming acceleration from a stop, I was always pleased with it's ability to get moving from highway speeds. It would run from 75-120 quicker than you'd expect a 332hp car to pull.

These aren't NASCAR racers. With only a few hundred horsepower aerodynamics definitely matters at lower speeds. 75 mph might be a stretch, but I think at triple digit speeds the better aero of the 370 would definitely help to lessen the effective gap in horsepower between it and my 5.0. A 120-150 pull would be a lot closer than a 20-100 mph slaughter. :hello:

Now with the 900+ HP NASCAR racers, they say that damage to the nose of the car doesn't really start to hurt performance until 140+. But that's because they've got 900+ HP plowing through that wind resistance.
