Buzz up! Filed under: Acura, Auto Shows, Honda

It was recently reported by AutoExpress that Honda has shelved plans to build the Acura/Honda NSX supercar. Honda made no comment on the report that said Honda pulled the plug on the 600-hp supercar due to the economic slowdown.

Well, Autotelegraaf is now saying that Honda will bring the final NSX concept to the 2009 Detroit Auto Show next month. The report says that the concept will be very close to the final production version which will make its debut at the end of 2009 in Tokyo and 2010 in Europe.

The news comes a couple days after Toyota announced that it will still bring the Lexus LF-A to the market by 2011 despite the current economic situation.
So has the LF-A

Breathe easier, fans of big bucks supercars: Toyota is not stopping the development of its Lexus LF-A supercar (also known as the LF-1), according to the British publication Auto Express. Toyota reportedly confirmed the vehicle is still in development during a press conference announcing that it will continue on in Formula 1.

The news comes on the heels of the recent announcement by Honda that it is ceasing work on the successor to its NSX sports car. Apparently, it makes sense for Toyota to eventually bring the LF-A to market, although at this point, it's anyone's guess as to when the car will see production considering the current state of the industry. The car is clearly much farther along than the NSX was, so much so that it has even spawned a drop-top concept version, and a prototype participated in the Nurburgring 24 Hours earlier this year.

According to the Auto Express report, a handful of LF-A models will probably be built in 2009 to participate in various racing championships.

Last we heard, the LF-A was said to be powered by a V-10 producing over 500 hp, with a top speed of more than 200 mph. With it being marketed as a Lexus, expect a price tag well over $100,000 when and if it finally hits U.S. shores. Earlier this year, MT's Edward Loh posed the question: Has the Nissan GT-R got Toyota running scared? Looks like we'll find out soon enough if the LF-A is a match for Godzilla.

Honda CEO Takeo Fukui on Wednesday said his company has been forced to cancel the next-generation Acura NSX sports car due to poor economic conditions. The news came during a speech about the automaker’s revised financial forecast. Plans to bring the Acura brand to Japan have also been shelved permanently, the Nikkei news service has reported.

NSX is dead.

I don't think the CEO is going to make a statement canceling the nsx then a week or two later go back on his word and say Honda is not canceling it. Honda has pretty much finished the nsx but it won't come out any time soon. Because a car that expensive won't make Honda money in this economy. It wouldn't surprise me if Honda kept showing the nsx at auto shows but for them to launch the car most likely won't happen any time soon. I also wouldn't be surprised if Toyota post phones its super car for many years. The gtr is the last japanese supercar.

Why not?
This is very similar to the project involving the first Camaro, and later the 69 Boss Mustang(same designer in certain areas) and numerous Corvette releases. Production of sports and super cars is always an iffy situation. With this new news, it will only take a month to prove this article wrong. I don't understand why they would continue to hype up a dead project, doesnt that cost lots of money and resources in a bad economy?

The NSX was an awesome car but this new "NSX" should have a new moniker. Front engine NSX?? ehhhh.

But whatever they call it... they should build it!

The LF-A looks pretty sick too. It put down some ridiculous nurburing times. I think a 7:24? (Something similar but don't quote me on that)

I don't know if the LF-A will have large appeal, being a $200k V10 Lexus trying to compete with the likes of the 430 and Gallardo. But it will definitely be an impressive demonstration of their capabilities.

My personal opinion, I'm skeptical whether either will actually go into production due to their limited potential for significant profitability. Not many companies can afford to build cars for kicks and not make a profit (VW and the Veyron are the most obvious exception)

Actually Toyota and Honda are probably the best companies that can afford to build cars for kicks at a loss. Honda did it for years with the NSX. I believe they lost money on it the last several years of its existance. It was there halo car so they felt it was necessary to keep it around even though it lost a lot of money. Dont quote me but I vaguely remember the numbers breakdown and I believe one year they sold less than 50 NSX's but still kept it around...Toyota is a giant. They got the bucks to justify building the LF-A. How long they keep it around if it doesnt sell is another story but it looks like they are going to give it a try.
