Need Help - Car Stalled and wont start

So i was driving my 09 370z and i was about 5 minutes from home and all of a sudden i lost all engine power and the car stalled out. I tried to restart and it would crank but not turn over. I was checking a few things and came to realize my oil was below the L and at just the very tip of the dipstick. Car was towed to my house and now is sitting in my driveway. I have filled up the oil and tried to restart and it starts to turn over for 1 second before just cutting out again. Do our cars have a safety measure when low on oil or do you think possibly that my engine is f'd? I am really freaking out at the moment any input would help.

thanks

so the start motor begins to turn and the stops?

what does volt gauge say when you key the car on?

What does your gas gauge say?

If you added less than 3 quarts of oil it is probably fine unless you were tracking it.

kholy 08-01-2014 01:08 PM

Its right at 3 quarts of oil.

it starts to turn you can even hear it out of the exhaust then stops but keeps trying to crank

i'll have to check gauges again (should i be worried to keep trying if not starting?)

full tank of gas

Beg/borrow/steal an OBD scanner and see if there are any DTCs. You can find them for as little as $25 or so. Many auto parts stores will loan/rent you one.

Edit: You can overheat the starter motor and/or battery with repeated starting attempts. Let it cool for 5-10 minutes after 2-3 attempts.

FPenvy 08-01-2014 01:19 PM

where are you at in ohio?

1slow370 08-01-2014 01:21 PM

I'm sorry I don't understand this "it starts to turn you can even hear it out of the exhaust then stops but keeps trying to crank"

What in the hell does that mean? So you push the button the motor starts turning over but then it stops but it doesn't?

Does it start firing but fails to start and keeps cranking over? Try not to start it to much you have done anything to fix the problem so all cranking it is going to do is kill the battery if it isn't already dead and then you won't be able to start it once you do figure out whats wrong.

yes it starts firing then fails and keeps cranking

i've only tried a few times battery still seems strong

Also, i just wanted to note that i never got an Oil light on my dash until the car died

1slow370 08-01-2014 02:07 PM

Any codes get them checked, tilt the passenger seat forward put your ear to the cargo shelf and push it to on and see if you can hera the fuel pump for two seconds

I don' t want to scare you, but you are describing EXACTLY what happened to me when my first short block was replaced. It was the timing chain stretched, and some other ungodly horrors brought on by excessive oil consumption......mine had only 12k at the time...... also happened less than a mile from my home. For the record, the oil light is for pressure, not level......

I am currently on my 3rd short block....26K

kholy 08-01-2014 03:21 PM

The other thing that worries me is i have no idea how i lost oil and why i never got an oil light on my car

you would have lost me at the second short block.

gl with her!:tiphat:

1slow370 08-01-2014 04:54 PM

the oil light is based on pressure not level so if you were three quarts down there was still a half a gallon of oil in the motor so so long as you werent tracking it you are probably fine yet. now if your alternator/or battery are going or you have a code for a crank or cam sensor being thrown that would explain why it isn't starting. I can't help you figure out what is wrong until i know if there are codes or if the battery is to low to start it. The battery has to supply almost 400 amps to start the car and power the ignition and fuel pump and if it is run down it may need a charge and then to have an auto parts store check the battery and alternators condition.

If you had siezed the motor it wouldn't crank over right now or it would be making one hell of a noise

Here are the scanned codes

1st code i got was the camshaft sensor

second was the fuel

I can hear fuel pump turn on, battery gauge at 14

1slow370 08-01-2014 05:04 PM

ignore the afr code for now the cmps is why it's not starting, get yourself a 10mm wrench and pull the passenger side cam sensor and post a picture of the tip of it.

it looks just like this one but is on the passenger side, it is the black plastic sensor sticking out of the side of the bump on the front cover

Ok clean it off put it back in put a battery charger on medium on the car for about an hour and try to start it again

1slow370 08-01-2014 05:48 PM

What happens is you can get a layer of wear metal stuck to the magnet on the end of sensor and it cant pick up them cam wheel, so long as the tip is clean and not scratched or chipped it should work unless the sensor is burned out, a wire is loose, or the battery is dead

If u clean it charge the car and it still wont start take both cam sensors out clean them and flip them so they are on the other side and see if the code moves to the other bank

What should I clean it with? Paper towel?

kholy 08-02-2014 09:35 AM

I just cleaned it, no change... car is on charger as its just under 12v now

1slow370 08-04-2014 12:22 PM

any update? Did you end up taking it to the dealer?

RonRizz 08-06-2014 05:21 PM

Update????

1slow370 08-06-2014 07:13 PM

Oh and don't tell the dealer **** about what happened let them figure it out, otherwise they will try to get you for **** that isn't broken just because you assume it is damaged.

olddudesrule 08-08-2014 09:23 AM

Any updates on this??

kholy 08-11-2014 11:04 AM

Its at dealer... Engine has low compression. They mention I still have power train warranty however my last documented oil change was 8k miles ago so he says Nissan won't cover due to that. Quoting me that new engine would be 7500 just for engine.I am speechless right now... As it seems my fault for forgetting about oil but I can't afford to get it replaced. Any suggestions on what I could do?

1slow370 08-11-2014 11:07 AM

call nna if they deny based on you being only 500miles past the interval, but next time change the oil.

JARblue 08-11-2014 11:09 AM

:iagree:

An 8K OCI cause the engine to $hit the bed? I don't think so... shame on Nissan.

kholy 08-11-2014 06:05 PM

so i called back to talk to them and i was wrong on the miles, im at 10k since my last oil change documented by them. No idea how i never realized.... im still in shock and have no idea what to do

RonRizz 08-11-2014 06:24 PM

Yikes.....10k since oil change?? how often were you checking it, if at all??
that sucks....I hope it works out for you.

If you are going to have to foot the bill might be better off having a shop rebuild your motor, or you could see if you can get one pulled from a yard, that way no one will actually have to take the motor apart. Something like this Nissan 370Z or G37 VQ37VHR Complete Engine Only 105 Miles | eBay

Motor blown: Need options

So after a month of waiting for nissan to tell me whats going on with my car long story short they claim: "Something internally is wrong" (this is what 4 weeks of diagnostics get you) and they wont be covering with warranty because i am slightly over on since my last oil change.

So here i am with a broken nissan which i am still paying on.

Need options on what to do

Have nissan fix? around 10k i believe

have 3rd party shop fix? not sure price

buy used motor and make it a winter project (will require help from friends or anyone)

i really am speechless as i just got off the phone.

No idea how i am going to pay for any of this but need to figure something out.

Thanks in advance sorry for rant

I have been there to man and it really sucks to go through something like this so I am very sorry for the terrible news. I also debated on having a shop rebuild my blown motor but in the end I found it much easier and faster to have the dealer drop a used motor in which cost me around $5700 labor and tax in. The engine the dealer found me only had 15K miles but I installed my Stillen SC and has been solid ever since.

I now have an extra engine I may build off of once my funds are back up but I found this to be the best route after my 2013 G37 coupe engine gave out after only 15K miles. My situation was different because I had Forced Induction and a very bad tune that cause detonation within a week but I have already been down that road and don't ever want to go through that again. GL to you man!

BTW! Have you tried to contact Nissan Consumer Affairs? Worth a shot.

I have, they said unless i can provide a receipt of an oil change within that 2k miles i am hosed.

What i dont like mostly was how dealer treated me... i had to call after 4 weeks gave no info and now they just said something internally is wrong. There is noooo way i am paying them for diags if they just tell me something internally is wrong.

thats not to bad 5k...

how you like stillen any pics of car?

DEpointfive0 09-08-2014 05:57 PM

I've been there... I couldn't talk when I was given the quote of 10k...

PM me, let's talk

Arrvaxx 09-08-2014 05:59 PM

Wait...they are claiming that you broke your car by not doing an oil change? That is shitty.
