Fuel Gauge Not Lighting All The Way UP
So the other day I filled up my tank and I noticed the last full light was not lit. I was cleaning the windshield so I though maybe the pump auto shut down to early and I didn't notice so I swiped my card again and topped it off. When I left the station the top light still was not on.
I'm going to give it a tank and see what happens next fill up. If it's not working I guess it's off to the dealer. I scanned the TSB list and didn't see one for fuel level sensors. Anyone else have this problem? I know the 350's have it after some age but I only have like 12k miles... |
Yep same here, there was a thread while back about it but do not remember if there was a fix for it.
|
There are other threads about this issue. Check on there to read all about it.
BLUF: it's a common problem and It seems that getting it fixed won't stop it from happening again. |
Fuel sender problem -- I've got it too. Still need to go to the dealer to have it taken care of.

I had them do something, but it did nothing in the end. |
Thanks for the responces guys. I guess I'll go anyway if it still happenes after the next tank. I guess the more of us that go the quicker they'll come up with a TSB that will be a long term fix. I'd be interested to know what they replace on your car too Jordo.

mine was the fuel sending unit, changed it and it's been good since, about 25k miles ago.
|
Mine has it also. The first fill after the first time I noticed it, it came good. However, it has now happened again.
|
So I filled it up again and same deal. Made an appointment at the dealer which happened last Monday and took it in. I was willing to bet they'd say it was a sending unit or level sensor problem. I figured that since the 350 had that issue and it seems unlikely a long lasting LED would go out.
They called me to tell me to come get the car a few hours later and they'd call me for a follow up appointment when the parts came. They ordered a whole new cluster under warranty... I guess it's the LED according to them, we shall see probably next week. |
I had that happen once after a fill up. I started the Z and noticed that the last light was not on. I stalled the engine and re-started it, and the last light lit up. Hasn't happened since. I just wrote it off as some kind of "computer glitch."
|
When it happened the first time I noticed right away and shut it down and restarted and same deal. Since I was still at the gas station I even topped if off more (after the auto shut off on the pump) and it wasn't lit. Next fill up same deal, that when I went to the dealer.
|
Mines done this a few times as well. One of the first times I noticed it, I drove home, then when I left to go somewhere later that day, the last one came on so i didn't bother with it. But I think if it keeps doing this, I'll take it in sometime after the holidays.

Mine also got this problem, but switch off the engine, start it a 2nd time all the lights will lit, strange.!
|
Weird -- so they are trying the cluster before the sender?
Mine intermitently works now... still haven't gone in to complain... probably will before end of next month. |

So they replaced the cluster and the problem actually got worse lol. Instead of 1 LED not lighting up after a re-fill 2 are not lighting. They are going to order the sending unit/level sensors. To make matters worse the silver trim around the multi-meter gauge on the brand new cluster has a small chip in it. I'm going to tell them it has to be replaced again...

Not clear why, but after switching to Sunoco, problem is fixed for me. Fuel gauge works perfectly again  Confirmed after several fill ups now :ugh2: My Z doesn't like Chevron??? Why? :wtf: Only other thing I can think of is that there's something screwy with the fuel temp sensor -- I could be mistaken, but I think the ECU actually takes note of that -- seem to recall that being one of the parameters that can be datalogged from the ECU. |
I had it happen after adding Techron to my tank. It took about 5 refills and then all the lights started working again. I'm convinced something with the additive pisses off the fuel level sensor.
|
My fuel level sensor has been acting really weird lately... it said I had 5 dots left.. and this morning I turn on the car and it says I need to fill up cause only 2 dots left. I drove it around town for about 15 minutes and shut down the car.... I turn it back on, now it says I have 4 dots left. WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF?!!
G force were you able to get this fixed? |

Interesting as our 370Z has only had Chevron since it was filled for us at the dealership. I've also added a bottle of Techron to the fuel as well—zero issues.

Man you guys are back luck,I read this thread a few days ago and its happening to mine and I'm not even driving it now.:shakes head:
|
hrmm dont think its really anything to do with the additives. Today I was filling up gas. Should have filled up about 16+, but it stopped at 15. Sometimes you guys may think you filled it up but whatever stops the pump from pumping triggers early.
I've actually been to a gas station where the pump would stop every 4 seconds.. after about 1 gallons I moved to another pump. (thats my take on this) |

I had this issue after two consecutive fillups about a 2 weeks ago...but it lights up now.
Its been 5 fillups since and it hasn't happened again |

I get this problem every now and then. Haven't really noticed a trend in what fuel i use or additives. When my last light doesn't turn on, i usually just drive about 30 miles and it comes back on then obviously goes back off when the fuel level goes down. It does seem to happen more when i top it off I guess, but it doesn't bother me enough to go to the dealer about it. I mean I know my tank is full, so w/e.

Bumping this thread up as mine problem still continues no matter where I fill up (mostly shell/Exxon level stations). Has anyone found a permanent solution, gauge cluster, fuel sender?
