I've got an idea... why not try and fill the tank all the way to the top to overflowing. It'll probably work then.

Strangler 08-04-2011 05:44 PM

** Update**

I just came back from the dealer. Apparently, when they turned the engine back on the fuel lights went back to normal. This has happened to me more than once, turning engine on and off or whatnot didn't do the trick. The dealer just blamed it on the heat and says it could be acting up under 110+ degree weather. They told me just to keep and eye on it and when the temperature gets MUCH cooler and if it still continues to have any problem, bring it back in. They also tell me that I have plenty of time under warranty. What I didn't mention was that I have lifetime warranty from the dealership I bought the car from.

^^ When I fill my gas tank, I always go 1 more click after it clicks the first time from being full. This has been the same routine with filling up gas since I got my brand new car. Everything was normal until semi recently.

Just an update, I've only filled up once since the dealership visit, but the gauge worked normally.

And no, overfilling does not correct the problem.

wassup everyone sorry for the late update on mine but yea dealership replace my guage clust and after I filled up with shell gas, lights all came on. This last but a week. After a week I decide to switch to a different gas and behold the last led didny turn on again. So now I need to head back to dealership to fix this problem and have them replace the fuel sender. Anyone that got fuel sender replace did the problem go away or permanently fix the problem. They need to hurry up and do a recall. My warranty is about to end on my car and I dont have time to take it to the dealership anymore going to iraq in 10 days

cossie1600 08-05-2011 08:51 AM

The unit is awful anyway as it is not linear, the last 3 dots go down faster than the first 7 dots

thispecialk 08-05-2011 08:57 AM

I wonder if this is all z's that has this problem and ppl are just ignoring it

Even with this problem I still love my car. its not annoying but not a big problem just remember to fill up at least once or twice a week

I don't know about you but it does annoy me. I hate it when something I own and it doesn't work correctly.

Pelican170 08-05-2011 03:32 PM

I had this problem last year right before putting it in the garage for the winter, trust me, i thought it was extremely annoying and knowing it wasnt coming out of the garage for a while was even more frustrating. When i got it back on the road, i ran the gas down as far as possible, filled it up and havent had the problem since....

cossie1600 08-05-2011 06:25 PM

FYI. There are two fuel level sensor, one on each side of the tank. I wonder if that is part of the problem?

I had both of my fuel senders and o-rings replaced under warranty. Fuel gauge works fine now.

Filled twice up twice now, and works just fine.

thispecialk 08-08-2011 09:40 AM

I just drop my car of stealership hopefully they fix it this time and not replace the guage cluster again they already replace it twice

rudi 08-08-2011 05:18 PM

Had my fuel sender replaced two months ago, no problems so far.

cossie1600 08-08-2011 06:36 PM

rudi, with the new senders, did the miles before empty box become more accurate? Mine is currently off by 40-50 miles

thispecialk 08-09-2011 06:01 AM

After 2 guage cluster change the stealer decided to finally change the fuel sender. Should get car tom

Haven't really paid any attention to that. However, the kilometers to empty still indicates around 80 when the warning pops up. I did notice that now it seems to take longer before the first two LEDs go out, much quicker than the next two.

thispecialk 08-10-2011 11:29 PM

Just got the z today. At first they said next week thursday I was like wtf i drop the car monday but later in the afternoob got my car back. They said they replace the fuel sender both of them and the problem was the thing holding the fuel sender was long and it was getting stuck somewhere so they installed the new sender which is shorter. They said this is a known problem but not much ppl come in to get it fix so thats why there is no recall yet. But they said the recall should come in soon for the senders. Im just glad I got my car back before I leave for iraq. Didnt want to have my brother pick up my car at the dealer dont know where u would take it lol.

I can answer your question. My 2 sending units were replaced under warranty this past Friday....9/30. Before the replacement miles to empty was reading 42 miles. After replacement (without adding gas) miles to empty read 87 miles.

BTW . . . Now when the gas pump automatically clicks off all the LED's are lit. Before the repair the full LED was never lit unless I almost ran the tank over by adding more gas.

I get this problem sporadically with it showing 1 dot empty after a fill up. Happens only maybe every three or four fill ups. It hasn't ever bothered me enough to bring it in. Overall has everyone mostly had success after bringing it in to the dealer?

My issue was resolved after my fuel sender units and o-rings were replaced! :)

theDreamer 10-12-2011 11:30 AM

Hand my fuel sender replaced and all lights light up on a fill up, also instead of the first dot (far right) lasting 60-80 miles, it went out at 32 this morning which I am hoping means a more accurate measurement.

That alone makes me want to schedule an appointment down at the service department to get it fixed.

antbear 10-13-2011 09:21 AM

"Overall has everyone mostly had success after bringing it in to the dealer?"

After reading the posts the decision to have my sending units replaced under warranty was a no brainer.

lindagn1 11-16-2011 02:57 PM

I had my fuel senders replaced last week after three different trips to the dealer regarding this issue. The last light has been out for 4-5 tanks in a row before I had it replaced. Before that, it was working intermittently.

The service advisor said that the fuel sender was bent, hence not reading all the way full. Which is strange because they didn't say anything about a bent sender when they took it apart the first time. I hope this fixes it.

More Problems

:tup:Starting to get crazy readings on gas just like everyone else.... seriously doubt that Techron has anything to do with it.

P.S. Mazda, Ford, BMW, Audi, and now my Nissan all have fuel problems :0):ughdance::happydance:

craig1391sf 01-21-2012 03:04 AM

I've noticed the same problem recently. I thought maybe the pump shut off early and I didn't realize it but I don't think that is the case.

slo 03-12-2012 03:45 PM

Apologies for bringing back an old thread, just for updating purposes.

When I bought my car, the dealership filled it up. I noticed the last LED wasn't lit, I wasn't about to complain since I figured the gas card must max out at 50 bucks or something. Just filled it up Sunday and noticed the last LED still wasn't lit.

It actually makes me laugh that something this stupid went wrong. Depending on how I feel about it in the next month, I may take it into the dealership.

i didnt take mine in until i had 2 lights that didnt light up and now everything is all good

ukmastermind 03-16-2012 12:16 PM

Me Too!

I had defective Fuel senders @ 8k on my '09.
Problem is, if the Tech doesn't "see" the issue himself, they are hesitant to fix it.
The dealer spent a few hours "inspecting" the car, and didn't find anything so I drove to a local gas station with a Tech sitting shotgun and he saw with his own eyes the fuel gauge not liighting up. The Service Advisor had no choice but to order the parts and ok the fix :tiphat::driving:

P.S. This was a big problem on the 350z's and a buddy of mine went thru 3 sender units within 36k mi. warranty and at 38k it failed again. Once his gauge hits mid tank, it just drops

ukmastermind 03-16-2012 12:17 PM

PPS... you'll be surprised how inaccurate it gets... I almost ran it dry with 2 dots lit. :stirthepot::eekdance:

Cmike2780 03-19-2012 08:00 AM

Dammit! This issue just came up this morning. Last dot doesn't light up.

i didnt have that problem...told them i had fuel sender issues, they ordered the part and replaced it.
didnt have to go through proving to them that i had the issue.

Cmike2780 03-19-2012 03:24 PM

:wtf: I drove it this afternoon and fixed it itself. I guess it was a fluke.

I'm sorry, i hope you are still under warranty:shakes head:

My lights usually come all the way back up after at least 24 hours.

Yup, still under warranty. I also have the extended warranty. This kind of sucks though. I hate having to get warranty work done.
