Default Door Rattle

Gentlemen and Ladies,

Have noticed for some time now that there is an annoying momentary rattle in the driver's door. Its situated near the top of the door panel, somewhere in the rear most third. It only occurs when the car is driven over a substantial road bump/pavement break/etc. at speed.

Before I tear into the door panel and its interior workings, has anyone had a similar issue and can point me to the suspected culprit?

Its common.. search around and you will find the solution.. IIRC something inside the door is rattling.

Jayhovah,

I never thought to do a search in the coupe forum for the rattle issue, because there's no air bag in the coupe doors.

After doing so, its apparent that I'll just have to pull the door panel and dig around. There's no common rattle source that matches what I'm dealing with, since my issue occurs when the glass is down.

I'll leave the issue until I store the car this winter, and if I narrow down the source, I'll revisit this thread with the solution. Thanks!

It's the window regulator. I replaced it with a new one and it stopped. I ordered the part online and got a guy who installs window tint to put it in. The part and labor were both $80 I think, total $160 to fix.

Botaine,

Thanks for the follow up! I eventually got around to pulling the door panel and dug around to see if I could see anything that could cause the rattle. Nothing showed up as obvious.

So, if I want the rattle gone, I have to source another window regulator .... and after its install .... hope that it fixes the issue. And .... maybe not???

It fixed the rattle in the door for me. It's a pretty common issue particularly for early model years. It only happened over bumps.

I too had a similar rattle, and replacing the window regulator fixed it. I installed it myself—not hard. Note that the rattle from the regulator is very specific: it only rattles when the window is all the up. If you lower the window just a tiny bit, the rattle goes away.
Now, I’ve also had a different door rattle that happens irrespective of window position. And I tracked that down to the upper seat belt tensioner.

Boilard,

Thanks for jumping in on the thread with the info on the upper seat belt tensioner.

My ride is a roadster, and I'm not certain how that changes the info you gave, but I'll certainly check mine out to see if that changes the rattle/buzz any.

Guess I can ride without the seat belt on over some bumps to see if the rattle/buzz happens, and then again with the seat belt all of the way out extended and see if that changed anything.

Thanks for the hint!

Mine’s a roadster also, so definitely check the seat belt mechanism. For me the noise seems to come from the rear of the drivers door, right where the top of the shoulder belt enters the tensioner. It’s on a swivel mechanism.
