for a car that just came out in the market and is as hot and legendary as a Z in worth to pay sticker price for, yes paying above sticker is over rated but if you do so its your fault not the dealers for asking. The only chance a dealer gets to ever make some kinda of money is when a new car comes out and they are a rare thing.. after all the hype is gone off course they will drop the prices but you got to keep in mind that the demand for these cars are high at the moment and the rule of thumb is high demand high prices low demand low prices.

look at the gt-r sales... there might not be a high demand for them so many dealerships are not getting them in but the few dealers tha do get'em have way more demand because the other dealer do not carry any in inventory making people travel to buy one...

... and more Z06 and 911 owners would be driving a GTR right now had dealerships not inflated prices upwards of 20K dollars. Instead of selling the cars for a marginal profit at or above MSRP, dealerships are sitting on their GTR's because they are worth 90K. I understand the hype of a new model never released on N.A. shores and charging premium price, but the new Z car is a mass produced sports car that was redesigned from it's previous model year. I think the current economic state of our country far outweighs all the "demand" that dealerships are fluffing up over the 370Z. I think 12 brand new 08 350's on my local dealer lot speaks more to this end.


I give my local Chevy/Nissan dealerships 6 months to a year until they either close their doors or start selling new models at discounted prices.

these 2 guys are the exact reason why dealers price vehicles over M.S.R.P, they are 2 extremes of car buying, but in order to offset the profit and pay a sales person that is highly trained they have to do so... have a inflated sticker to make a high profit to make up for those who buy the cars for nothing. If you paid too much for a car blame yourself, there is a lot of websites and info available to the public to protect you from having overpaying... Darwin was and is right... Only the strongest and fittest will survive.. if you think by walking into a dealership and asking for invoice and requesting them to sell to you for that is going to get you a deal.. maybe you should consider your manners because they do not walk into you house and put their feet on your sofa and tell you to go get them a beer.... thats pretty much what it sounds like to a salesperson

so what if they asking 2x the M.S.R.P that doesnt mean you have to pay that... remind the dealer of what M.S.R.P is and make them a legitimate offer.... but keep in mind before you go play that game make sure you are ready to buy... without commitment they are not going to take you seriously.. why should they discount the car if you are not buying it? thats the way they see it.. if they tell you that they are going to discount you will tell your friend which will tell their other friends and totally killing the future possibility of making a higher profit... dealers are a business not a charity they are there to make money not break even

Not to get snarky but a response to GT-R man's postings is needed for clarification on the matter of MSRP and pricing.

Personally, I have never met a highly trained professional car salesman. I've met a plentiful amount of swindlers but none that are knowledgeable about the vehicles they sell that can remotely answer even the most novice, basic question regarding new models.

I also dont think it is rude as a potential car buyer to be informed of market prices and to shop and look for the best deals in my area. In working with my local car salesman to attain a certain price, I'm going to use the information I have at my disposal to get the best deal. So if being informed and knowledgeable is bad manners, then send me to reform school!

Dealerships sell cars at invoice and make a marginal profit all the time. If not, they wouldnt sell vehicles at employee pricing and invoice. It's simply greed that drives dealerships to list cars at 40-45K for a 31K dollar car.

I agree that dealerships are a business out to make a profit and are not a charitable organization, but the product they are selling is a mass produced Datsun-- not a hand built luxury/performance car. Love the cars Nissan produce--dont take my comments as negative but perspective on sticker is why the thread was started. I wouldnt be buying one or posting in this forum if I'm not interested in buying the 370.

I dont know how serious I have to be if I'm paying cash for a new car and disclose that to the salesman up front. Perhaps bringing a dufflebag full of 100's would be appropriate? I have honestly never considered that.

Yes about 80% of salesman out there are not knowledgable of their vehicles the other 20% will have either full knowledge or are just really good people persons.. Yes dealers will make money even on invoice pricing but that is only enough if the dealership sells a high volume not for the small town dealers such as the one you are talking about.. that doesnt mean that they would sell the car at invoice either.
Car buyers should have the most information as possible when purchasing their new vehicle, if you dont do your homework you will pay for it, its that simple you want to half @$$ your research than a profesional will charge you accordingly to it.
Back to invoice pricing you will never see a hot vehicle selling at those kinda of prices due to its demand.. say whatever you want about the current national car sales data base.. if everything went by the books the economy wouldnt be where it is at. Truth is all vehicles may be mass produced but that doesnt mean they have not had extensive research done to them, thank GOD they are mass produced!! who would want to pay $1000 for an oilchange? that would drive sports cars buyers and real drivers crazy.
Also when you disclose to a salesperson you are paying cash that only means you are a hard buyer, you will hit him low on price and when he gives you the price you want, you will still go home and think about it, cash, check, financing or leasing all buyers are threated the same, maybe if you get an inexperienced saleman they may threat differently but its not fair to be threated diffrenetly just because you are paying cash.. dealerships would rather finance you because there is a chance to make more money that way. what state do you live in? if you live away from where I am I ll shoot you a price that a dealer will take and I ll share the info you need to purchase this car.

Save us the trouble regarding your comments on how people should & shouldnt buy a car, how they say things or whatever strategy they choose to implement while negotiating a deal...unless they are of value. Which, none of yours have been thus far.

I have bought many new cars in my time, from very expensive German ones to economical Japanese ones:

1. I have NEVER met a "highly trained" salesperson. I have rarely met a salesperson who is remotely knowledgeable. So you can shave off a few points the total right there for savings.

2. In one breath you write "[they] have a inflated sticker to make a high profit to make up for those who buy the cars for nothing" yet in another breath you write "If you paid too much for a car blame yourself". Your words are oxymoronic & hypocritical.

To correct..I am paying $36,900 for Yellow, Sport, Touring, AT, floor mats, illum door panels, trunk mat. MSRP is about $40,300. I have contacted over 50 dealerships just in the couthern california area and only a few offer around $400 over invoice and most are MSRP only. This price is right at invoice and maybe even a bit lower. I got lucky with the mis-quote on the $500 charge for yellow.

Dear caj77,

Yes my words may be "oxymoronic & hypocritical". but are your serious? In this land called America, where we are free to do what ever we want, and have freedom of business you are telling me that is not ok for a car dealer to ask for more money than the car is worth knowingly that, that price will be the starting point of a negotiation?
Or should I say the starting point to drop the price?
Man good thing you dont purchase clothes in the tens of thousands otherwise you wouldnt have a life.

Charging more for sticker is utterly disgusting"... huhmm you should be throwing up everytime you put that dollar into the soda machine bc if you put it into perspective you are paying 300% markup in a 1 dollar purchase.. feel stupid now. the only reason why cars are still negotiable items it is the only business where volume pends on putting a consumer on the spot to buy.
- let me simulate how you buy a car

1. go on the net a surft the car you want....." smart"
2. call every dealer in your area for a price..... "smart also"
3. call your local dealer to see if they will match the offer.... "also smart"
4. now you go to the dealer and try to beat him up on the price that he has already agreed to sell you the car for.
5. when the dearler says no.. you get either angry and leave.. or make some lame excuse to leave and call the dealer liers and cheaters and not willing to give you a deal.
6. you lose face with that dealer, go to the next and settle for the same offer that the other dealer was willing to give you the car for...

wow what a winner you are... a true negotiator should know that all dealers within the same region get the car at the same cost.. no matter where you go.. so next time you want to buy a car.. grow some balls.. use the only leverage you have which is commitment to buy not money "which from my experience is the best thing a consumer has going for them" sit down ask to speak with a salesmanager and negotiate you deal with the man that has all the power, get your ego massaged while you are at it.. a dealership is not going to break if they don't sell you that Z that they are making less profit then if they would to sell a Versa.

Many people think they are an expert negotiator because they negotiated about 100x in their life time... I m so shocked wow.. yea 100x in 20 yrs thats 5x a year when just the average salesman does that in a day.. dont under estimate the knowledge of professional level of salesman.. not only car salesman all of them because the reason you get angry or "Disgusted" is because they do it better and you cant help it..

enjoy that Z that you got... many people wish they had a chance.... And I am here to give those who want one a shot..... so when they leave they will be their new Z happy as hell

Most commission only but thats coming around to salary plus volume bonuses...
Say you get paid 2400 salary + $100 per car if you sell 9-13 units , +200 per car 13-18 units or + 300 per car from 18+ units
