Default Opinion on Price: Base 2009 w/ Sport Package, Manual Transmission

Hey all,

New member but a long time lurker. I'm interested in a 2009 Manual Transmission Base 370z with the Sport package. (Link below). Carfax looks clean and the miles, about 11,000, are low for the car's age.

The car is listed at $28,980, which I think is far too high. I have to imagine the dealership paid somewhere between 22k and 24k for this car on trade in.

2009 Nissan 370Z Base - Countryside Illinois area Volkswagen dealer near Chicago Illinois ? New and Used Volkswagen dealership Oak Brook Hinsdale LaGrange Illinois

I must admit, this is the first time I have bought a car that is this nice and this expensive. (Car buying is much easier when your looking for a beat up SUV.) I plan on putting 15 - 18 down and financing the rest.

My question is this: Since this is my first 'real' car purchase, what is a good strategy going forward with trying to buy this car? What price should I open with? (5% over their cost to purchase . . . 25,500.) What tricks should I look out for aside from not letting them get me to fall for the "What can you afford in monthly payments" scheme.

I read all the stickies regarding getting invoice pricing, but these seem to be geared toward haggling for a new car, not a 3 year old car.

I'm not looking for a tutorial. At the very least I'd appreciate any input regarding what everybody's highest offer (max limit) would be for this car.

Thanks!

its always best to start as low as possible, the higher you start is the point the dealer knows what you will pay...and it will give you wiggle room to further negotiate and to see if it reaches your price point or what your willing to pay and if not, the door isnt locked...walk out!

Hmm well about a week ago I bought my 2009 370z with sport package and navi. It has only 15k miles , is in literally perfect condition, and I only paid 27k for it. But thats just my 2 cents, every dealer will be different.

That's interesting. Congrats on the new Z, must feel good.

If you don't mind me asking, what did the dealer have it listed at and what was your opening offer (if you made the first move)?

They had it listed at an even 30k, and the day before I found it online and called them about it, they randomly dropped to 27800. I told them I would pay 27k for it and that was all she wrote. Honestly 27k was the cheapest I could find for what I got in value, but good luck with your z I hope it works out.

I bought my Z two months ago. 2009, base no sport, 18,500 miles, found it online for $24,200. With ttt, extended warranty, key fob insurance, and gap insurance, and a clear bra and new toyo tires, $28,000 total. I put 3 grand down and financed $25,000 at 2.5% apr through Nissan.

I wouldn't go higher than 25k. The car is 3 years old.

2.5% is pretty damn good. Is this some deal going through Nissan dealerships right now or was it just based on your credit score?

I realize the car is 3 years old, but with only 11k on the odometer and no significant changes through any of the subsequent model years I can see the age of the car being a fairly moot point. However, I would agree that 25k to 27k is about as high as I should go OTD. I can't see a dealership paying any more than about 22k for it on trade in. Offering 25k would essentially be giving them a 10% profit if they bought it for about 22k.

Thanks for all the input so far.

I got 24,500 on a trade in for my 09 non sport but that doesn't mean much bc they also sold me a car and could strategically give me more while killing me on the car they sold me. But they ended up selling my car for 25,900 with 29k miles. This was a several months ago.
