370z rates nearly last on CR's owner satisfaction survey
1 Attachment(s)
Consumer Reports ranked the 370z sixth in the overall ranking of sports cars, but what is really surprising is how low it rated in the percentage of owners who would definitely purchase the same vehicle again. It came in next to last behind the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. It kind of begs the question, why?
|
My guess is people wanting to step up to a more powerful/mod friendly platform
|
Nothing wrong with the results. I'm happy with mine but if I were to get another sports car it would be a different one not because I hate it or it is bad but simply to try something faster and with more finesse perhaps. Plus you're talking about a car that is on the end of it's lifecycle. If they did this survey in 2010 it would do better.
|
I would agree. Once you mod that V6 if you don't go FI you're going to crave a V8. Shoot if you do FI I think it's natural to want a bigger engine eventually.
|
Doesn't surprise me at all. Look at the BS problems corporate doesn't choose to solve... It took... 4 years to have a recall on the steering wheel lock, and still some cars aren't covered
|
Nissan is very good with innovation with cars but if problems arises they give you deaf ears!
|
I agree with most of the list but....a Fiat 500? ...a Ford Focus?
I don't think many of our forum members look forward to the day when we can trade up to one of those. |

Advertising also might have an influence, as it helps build and maintain ownership hype. Nissan spends more time trumpeting the Altima and Juke.
Have you seen the color combinations you can order a Juke in? Makes me jealous. |

sorta sad but sorta glad... i think this shows the education of the modern 'sports' car buyer. they are looking for a mixed use car with a heavier leaning tendency to the 'sedan'
i wanted a true coupe which i define as 2 doors 2 seats. miata or s2000 were the only other viable options and well... yea... |
Well...
I bought my Z in August.
When I look at that list there is not one car I'd buy other than the Z. And it isn't like I'm exactly enamoured with it. I wouldn't buy anything domestic with a V8; the Porsches are way more than I'm willing to pay and I won't pay the service bills, same goes for anything else European. Miata and Fiat??? Sorry, I'm not gay. Hyundai Genesis? Nope. BRZ, FRS or whatever else they call 'em? Too plain Jane. If I was to go that route I'd rather have bought a Mazda 3 or a Golf. The only other car I really gave any thought about getting isn't exactly a sports car....Nissan Maxima. Just my opinion. 104 |

Which is a shame, because I really liked the body design. |
We have the same thread on the GC forum..lol. Im not sure I understand how a V6 Challenger is higher. LOL. Either way Id buy another Z as well as a GC.
|
Though I sold my Z, had OC issue with it, I would buy a Z again.
|
I bought my Z in April after owning several "sport compacts"
- '05 Acura RSX-S (6 speed) - '08 VW GTI (3 door, twin clutch) - '08 VW GTI (5 door, 6 speed manual) - '12 Mustang GT (6 speed) While I'd still own a GTI, the RSX is no longer made and the Mustang GT is too much car. I'm really happy with the Z. It's the Goldilocks Zone |
I don't remember the 370Z.com poll of the same question but 2/3's would repurchase their 370. That is a high number. Still the 370 is less common to see here in my neck of the woods than every car on the list except MEDIAN which I do not know.
It is nice to be happy with an unusual and beautiful car, as I am. |
I don't get CR, so I don't know how this category of cars compares to others in terms of willingness to buy the same car again. Satisfaction ratings for performance cars in the 60%+ range seems high (although I'd bet not as high as those purely seeking reliability in a car).

There's no mystery here. The 370Z is 6 years old and overdue for a refresh, going up against a lot of shiny new cars whose owners are still in the "honeymoon" period. Also, the type of person who buys a Fiat 500 or V6 Mustang (and thinks those are legitimate "fast" cars) probably isn't the type of person who would be shopping for a Z or C7 Corvette, so take any survey like this with a grain of salt. I'm always especially amused by MotorTrend "car of the year" which pits GT-Rs against the mighty Golf GTI and Focus ST.
I agree the numbers seem overall extremely high, except maybe for the FR-S. I thought all Scibaru owners were under the impression that their car was better than a Veyron... |
My guess is that the poll was influenced by two categories of Z owners:
1) Those who bought a "dream" thinking they wanted a sports car but discovered they actually need or prefer a little more "comfort," a back seat, or something else that is missing in the Z. 2) Those who have decided that when they buy another car, they would prefer to go for a more expensive ride rather than buy in the "value" range that the Z offers. But the major factor may be that CR's poll does not tap very deeply into the "enthusiast" segment of car buyers. |
for 30k i would definitely buy another Z, but once we break into the 40s i'd get something different.

Scibaru is a nice car. I know with total certainty it's not a car I wanna own, but I can see why a lot of people would love it and be overprotective when someone says it sucks at something. |
Although the 370z is on smexy car and is fairly "rare" in MN...I wouldn't buy again.
Needs more power, looks fast but isn't "fast". Although I did take it to the track a few times, not something I'd buy again. Although two diff cars, I'd rather trade up for a GTR than anything on that list. |
I almost bought a BRZ, I liked how it drove. Only thing I didn't like was how damn slow it is stock. My buddy has a 430whp FRS that runs 11's, breaking into 10's soon.
I would never take Consumer Reports metrics on buying a car of all things. I can't imagine they get a whole lot of feedback from people that actually tune or build their cars. Just how many of these people are mid-life crisis sport car buyers who really have no clue wtf they're buying. These are the kinds of people who don't give you the wave back when you see them cruising lol. I mean come on, Fiat? V6 Challenger!? V6 Mustang?!?!?! ROFL This is such a joke. The Civic I can understand because of the die hard Honda fangirls. |
Had an 03 350, bought the 370z last Aug. Would do it again in a heartbeat
|
I think some of you guys are misunderstanding that chart. It's not the results of asking "Of the sports cars that are available, which would you buy?". It's the results of asking "If you already own one of these sports cars, would you buy it again?"
I'm really amazed that 34% of 370Z owners would not buy it again! Yes, it's had some problems, but they are pretty minor in the "big picture". And those of us who frequent this forum probably see those problems as being worse than they really are because this would be the obvious place to vent your frustrations if you have a problem; those who don't have a problem wouldn't come here to post about not having a problem. So 34% of 370Z owners wouldn't buy another one. There are significantly more Mazda Miata owners who would repurchase their car than there are 370Z owners who would repurchase their Z. Wow... |
Not surprising at all, heck the Nissan/Infiniti family besides the Altima, Juke of recent has not been liked/perceived very well. They let known issues go on and on, with half a** fixes. Q50, Z, Maxima.....
|
I always thought of the Miata as kind of a secretaries car but my girlfriend bought one and it is a blast to drive. I like the Z a lot, but if I had to do it again I might take the Miata instead and save quite a bit of money. Much slower of course, but I never track my car anyway.
|
Partly Nissan's fault, as has been said in other threads, they don't do jack to promote the Z.
Also I think in general it just doesn't carry the prestige of other makes/brands. It's not a Porsche, it's not american muscle, it's not german engineering, etc. The list goes on. I can pretty much guarantee a lot of people who bought american muscle wouldn't consider even test driving a Z (I know a few personally). To a certain extent same might go for those who like the euros. |
Our Z ,are already 6-7 years old technology, every year eash car mfg will think of new way to make a car better, but our Z is more/less the same all these 6-7 years, look at GTR,every year there are changes to make the car more powerful...
|
These reports have more to do with the consumers than the cars in my opinion. It would be ALOT more useful if they included the most common reasons as to why people wouldn't buy another one. It is kind of funny how the ultimate fanboy cars are on the top of the list (porsche and vette)
EDIT: actually, you could argue that the top 8 are the most fanboy cars out there lol. |
SO many potential variables in this kind of survey to reach any kind of conclusion. Sample sizes...exclusion criteria...biases...Maybe 370z owners are most likely to be looking forward to the next generation Z!
Besides, 47% of all statistics are made up on the spot ;) |
