Default How does this compare around the world?

(I'm in Dubai) So car went in for 20,000km service: Air Filter, Oil Filter, Oil Change, remove wheels to clean brakes and whatever the 100+ checks are that they do at Nissan.

Service guy rang back and said that the front brakes pads would have to be replaced and the disks would need to be polished to accomodate new pads and also the AC filter would be need to be replaced, these are the costs:

(Converted to a more understandable currency)

Service: $220
Brake Pads/Polish Discs: $193
AC Filter Change: $83

Total: $496

(Bear in mind that labour is very cheap here)

Very expensive! In my country the labor would have cost only $50!
Since you asked comparing it around the world!

That's why he mentioned his low labor cost! It's practically nothing there. I'd say the parts cost were fairly reasonable. Surprised they needed to be done at 20K, unless your driving it hard quite often.

Thanks for the reply guys, Zoren, not sure where FL is (Florida perhaps?) but $50 is extremely cheap! I do drive her hard every day, but the heat and dust don't help, the last three months the average daily temperature has been 44C or 111F so it takes its toll on the car. I can only really push her for a short period of time as the oil temps start to rise quickly.

In the end I managed to get a discount so the price came down to $450 which I think isn't bad, coming from the UK and curiously asking a local Nissan dealer for a quote the price was over $1000 so this I consider very good value for money. Thats why we call them "stealers" in the UK

It's either, do it yourself, or pay the labor costs. Most automotive jobs, managers make commission off their sales. Automotive techs get flag hours, so the more jobs they add onto a car, the more time and money they get. So if doing what you need pays them for 3 hours, they get it done in 30 minutes to 1 hour and go to the next job (customer) and so on. Thats how most ase techs make bank

It's easy to throw rotors on the lathe machine while working on the a/c filter (cabin filter?) while switch out rotors, then reinstalling.
