I had an RX8 for 3 months as a second "for fun" car. Nothing fun about it. On earlier - pre-2009 models it was not recommended that you start the car and then immediately shut it down as it would flood the rotary engine. Example - if you needed to move my car in the drive way or some other quick thing...you had to start it, move it...let it run for a minute or two - and then shut it down. And even then sometimes it would be difficult to start.

Pain in the ***, oil burning, gas guzzling and no power. While I liked the exterior design and 4 doors alot - well, that's all I liked. Oh - it did handle well on the CA mountain roads once you got it going.

Our cars are FI V6 - bullet proof ancient engine design. Our engine is in many nissan/infintiti cars in many forms. Start it, turn it off, start it, turn it off. Never an issue.

With turbos 10+ years ago there was shut down protocol. Can’t remember the specifics tho as I never had one.

More like 20+

There is no practical reason anymore for turbo timers and such in the street. No one uses only oil cooled turbos only anyone. They all have water cooling as well.

Even if run "hard" a gravity fed coolant line designs allow some additional circulation around the center bearings when shut down.

I have owned two RX-7s. One of them would always flood. When it was below about 50 degrees out and if I drove it less than 5 min after being cold soaked it would flood. Rotarys have the spark plugs on the lower side of the engine and the plugs are flush with the housing. As stated these V6 engines are like comparing apples and oranges.

1- Idled down to allow the turbo to spool down and even out the temperature in the turbo. The engine needs to be running to circulate the oil and coolant if you shut the engine down without idling the engine down it can burn the oil or coolant and in many cases both which will cause carbon blockages in the oil feed and coolant feed and hamper lubrication leading to catastrophic turbo failure.

2- Get a Turbo Timer, so the bearings in the Turbo don't seize (Refer to #1).

I feel very fortunate as I never heard any of this until I'd had my turbo for ten years. Then I started following above recommendation most of the time. I just kept my oil clean.
