Default Beware: the extended warranty is not Nissan!

Hello fellow Z owners!

I received a letter from my local Nissan dealer (who I’m on good terms with) a couple weeks back regarding my original warranty coming close to expiration and would I like to extend this base warranty. Well, I put it off for a while, but on the way home yesterday, I decided to call the number from this letter, BUT...it was not my dealer who I was talking to. Here’s what happened:

Me: Yeah, I’m calling in regard to this extended warranty letter I received for my car.

“Nissan” guy: OK, what’s your vehicle model and year?

Me: 2010, 370z.

“Nissan” guy: Ohhh….you know I have a co-worker here who was just talking about that car and how she wanted to get one. Literally, just before you called she was saying that.

So do you think you’ll be keeping this car for many years, say 4 to 5 years.

Me: Yeah, I hope so.

“Nissan” guy: Because our warranty period is…blah, blah, blah

** This is where we got into the details of the deal and he pitched a pretty outrageous cost. I didn’t say “no” right away but decided to have fun with this pretend Nissan person before I hung up. **

Me: Alright, email me details and I’ll think about it.

“Nissan” guy: OK, I’m doing that right now.

Me: And before I hang up, tell your girlfriend in the office this: “Baby-doll, this guy says the best thing about…”

“Nissan” guy: (Laughing and interrupting me.)

Me: Oh sorry, was that inappropriate?? OK say this to her: “Sugar tits, this guy on the phone says the best thing about this car are the cooling seats because it’s 1,000 degrees outside and his back and butt are cool.”

“Nissan” guy: (Having a hard time saying this to her because he’s laughing so hard.)

** So be warned that (1) either Nissan has out-sourced this extended warranty thing or (2) this firm has purchased customer data from Nissan so they could approach us. Probably more a combination of both, I’m thinking. Just FYI fellow Z drivers. **

Interesting... I keep getting scam junk mail about my auto warranty expiring. It had nothing to do with Nissan, but it's a 3rd party scammer trying to scare me into purchasing an extended "warranty" for a lot of money.

Yep. It's pretty shady. I did love it when they sent me one of those for my Subaru at 75k miles (OEM warranty expired long, long ago). I called, explained the mods on the car, and told them I'd have a check to them as soon as I got it in writing that they would warranty the car in its modded state. I never got that document.

i still get these notices for my previous car that i traded in when i got the z. i believe all car sales are public record (from titling) and these companies use that info to target potential suckers.

Me neither. What baffles me are the guys who roll the extended warranty into the financed cost. Now you're paying interest on it. For the total cost of the warranty you most likely could have fixed just about any issue that popped up.

I only bought the nissan maintenance plan because I got an insanely good deal on it. Still haven't paid a dime for any service on my Z, but it runs out at the end of next year. Extended warranties are a joke.

I actually got a call the other day from a company wanting to sell me an extended warranty on my Porsche.
Him: "are you interested in a full coverage extended warranty on your 911?"
Me: "No"
Him: "It is cheap and good value."
Me: "I sold it."
Him: "So you don't want to warranty it then?"

Did this dude even listen to me?

I get extended warranty notices for my wrecked Z.

They usually begin with something like, "WARNING! YOUR 2010 NISSAN IS NEARLY OUT OF WARRANTY! DON"T GET STUCK WITH HIGH REPAIR BILLS!"

I should forward these letters to the appropriate junkyard.

Man sounds like everyone has gotten hosed by extended warranties here. Ill put in my 2 cents and tell you that extended warranties have saved my a$$ several times throughout the years. They might be expensive but can be negotiated at the time of purchase and even after you have bought.

I purchased one on my USED 2005 Mercedes E500 for $1700 at the time of purchase. I used the warranty for several things.
  1. Navigation glitch - replaced the head unit - $2250
  2. lights would pulse - Alternator replaced - $875
  3. Front center speaker crackled randomly - $475
  4. Gas door lock not engaging - $375
before the extended warranty was due to expire i had the dealer go through the car and they found a few things more that added up to around $600. So after the cost of the warranty I saved $2875. Now that doesnt say much for the car (03-05 were bad years for the mercedes E500) but it does show that I would have been 3k in the hole had i not opted for the warranty.

Unless you're a baller most people don't have $2200 on tap to repair their car or $1000 for that matter. And it doesnt have to be a mercedes to cost that much...your tranny goes out in your wifes Corolla? Minimum $1000 to fix. There are a lot of shady warranty companies out there but there are also reputable ones. just sayin

I was more pointing out that when you roll the warranty cost into the amount financed, it's probably costing you far more than the $2200 purchase price.

It all depends on the car. If I bought a used $60k+ Benz, I'd absolutely buy the warranty.

The issue as what the OP is warning is that of spam mail fishing for people to buy an extended warranty from them and NOT NISSAN.

Extended warranty thru the dealer does save you money "IF" something major happened NO doubt about that so thats no the issue here.

Most folks go with the odds that it'll continue to drive with no major issues.

You can come out ahead by banking the monthly amount the warranty cost you during the factory warranty period. Before the factory warranty ends, you've got a nice little nest egg to drop on repairs if needed, and you don't end up paying interest on $2k over 3-6 years. That only works if the buyer is able to save the money and not spend it.
