Now, doing something different with that spot has a different effect. So, if you have it strobe/flash like a formula brake and never stay solid, that would be cool and no longer a 'fog' light.
Being in SoCal it's all for looks not fog safety. I agree you can do a lot of different things with that light. For me it's just about replacing the cheap looking plastic cover with an actual light, and for looks, balance mainly, matching it's brightness with the ON taillights. If I can do brake brighter, I'll throw that in but it's not a deal breaker.

I don't think a fog, modified to match the tail lights in brightness tends towards the cheapness of the plastic plate. An
apple doesn't tend towards an orange. It's apple and oranges.
