Use unleaded premium gasoline with an octane
rating of at least 91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index)
number (Research octane number 96).

If premium gasoline is not available, unleaded
regular gasoline with an octane rating of 87 AKI
number (Research octane number 91) may be
temporarily used, but only under the following
precautions:

. Have the fuel tank filled only partially with
unleaded regular gasoline, and fill up with
unleaded premium gasoline as soon as
possible.

. Avoid full throttle driving and abrupt acceleration.

However, for maximum vehicle performance,
the use of unleaded premium
gasoline is recommended.
Thank you! Probably the most valuable comment in this entire thread. Who would have thought the owners manual would have had something valuable in it aside from showing you how to use your seatbelt and operate cruise control?

The OM is full of valuable information. A lot of folks in here need to take an hour off from driving their Z and RTFM and for some others, have their mom read it to them at bed time.

Just drive it. You could have put 87 in your Gixxer which has higher compression and it would still be okay.

go find a gas station with 100 octane. theres tons of them littered around in california. put in enough to bring octane up to 91!

heres a 91 + 100 octane chart...might be of some use

Sure you might not get the full performance of the engine, but as stated elsewhere on the previous page, the car has a knock sensor. It's purpose is to detect knock and retard ignition timing if present. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. On occasion, if i'm doing all interstate driving, i'll fill up half or 3/4 with 87, and alternate between the two during the trip.

Doesn't really work that way. You are most at risk from peak cylinder pressure. This is in the midrange at peak torque. So you can innocently hit the happy pedal while at 3K on the HWY or in town to pass someone and there you go with a 4000 RPM pull. You won't likely be able to hear any knock.

Yes, there is knock detection in just about every modern car which helps to shift the timing map entirely upon detection but why rely on that if you don't have to

Reading this from the Nissan Asist TSB:

Find a heavy block (nissan part #PA2390)
Start vehicle.
Place block on gas pedal.
Allow vehicle to redline while in neutral until all gas is expended.

Have vehicle towed to nearest Nissan Dealership and let them know what you have just done.

Just to update the thread, I ran the car under 4k rpms with slow acceleration between gear changes and decided to fill up when my car had 1/3 of a tank left. Aside from the immediate improvement in engine idling and responsive acceleration, my car runs as good as new. Thanks for all the feedback
