I was seriously thinking of buying a third property as well but I've wanted a new Z forever and life is short....

I personally own a home but I don't see any shame in having a nice car but living with the parents if you're in transition. And by transition I mean you better be in school or in some apprenticeship or something of the sort.

Maybe so when they get out of school they have money saved up to move on? If they don't then they'll be at their parents for a few more years trying to save money.

Man that sucks. "If" I ever get married again, or have a long term live-in, there will definitely be a pre-nup signed. No b**** is going to take away all that I have worked all my life for. Glad you didn't loose it!!!

I'd buy here in L.A. if it made any sense too, but I'd pay more in interest and HOA (even after accounting for taxes and such) than I would on rent for comparable (if not nicer) places.

Plus I needed a car as my old 97 Honda was fallin apart (I coulda gone cheaper, sure, but life's short).

there's another school of thought in owning a house...some rich people here do not buy house but prefer to rent. imagine this...you have 200k+ cash...they believe that it would be better used in investing the money somewhere else that makes money rather than spending on a house...they choose to rent than spend money buying a house...

It's not even that. Usually they just enjoy the ease of apartment living. They don't have to worry about lawn care or even about selling their property if they decide to up and leave.

From a financial perspective, owning is always going to be better than renting if you assume that the value of the property stays the same or appreciates because you will get your mortgage payments back in a sale.

If you're renting, you're throwing that rental payment away and will never get it back.

I despise apartment living! I would get into some sort of altercation at least once a month with some douchebag blaring his music, or leaving his trash by our door etc.

To me the benefit of owing the home is (usually) appreciation of the property AND the mortgage interest write off every year, so the benefit is two fold.

But those experiences will vary from place to place. If you are in a posh high rise you're never going to have to deal with those issues vs. an older complex with thin walls, etc.

But I agree about the benefits of owning. I just like the idea of having my own property even if it means I have to cut the grass myself.

I "rent," but it's paid by my company. I need to be in the "none of the above" category that isn't an option.

A little higher percentage of people living with their parents than I would have thought.
