john- oh i see. there was a TSB for the engine cooling system where some loose sealant rattles. does the noise stop when your a/c is off? if so does not apply.

here is the link:
Tsb: 2007-2009 nissan z; tapping noise from dash area when engine is running

IF YOU CONFIRM
A tapping noise coming from the dash area when the engine is running at operating
temperature,
NOTE: This tapping noise, if it should occur, sounds like a screwdriver being tapped on
the work bench. The tapping speed increases and decrease with the engine RPM and
may require engine RPM of about 3000 for the noise to be heard.

DETERMINE IF
The noise is coming from inside the heater core (see Service Procedure).

ACTION
“Back-Flush” the heater core to remove gray silicone debris.

I don't see why they have to move the seat to move the car 20 feet to the bay the car will be serviced and back.

Thanks Ken for the info but I'm sure it's mouse related or some other rodent especially given the fact that they found several acorns in the filter. Plus, there has always seemed to be a faint animal kind of smell in the interior so I want to make sure that a dead mouse is still not in there. I should have told you that it dosen't matter if the AC is on or not. You'll hear junk in the system just by turning on the fan. And it's weird because the noise isn't just one spot...you can hear dirt like debris moving around in different areas in the system which is especially noticeable when I turn up and then turn down the fan speed. Anyway I'll find out Thursday. Lets just hope that Sasquatch doesn't have a brother! Thanks for the AC info though

I brought my Z to another Nissan Dealer this morning to have the ventilation system checked out because I still hear more debris when I turn the fan on. Obviously I wasn't going to the other dealer where Sasquatch gave me the attitude about moving the seat. After my complaint to the service mgr, I happily burned that bridge. Right away, I notice a big difference in this dealership. First of all, I was able to drive it in the first bay myself where they write up the work order. Next, I could tell that these guys were "car crazy" like me and one of the other service guys there had a '91 Z modded out to over 500 hp so they could relate to Z enthusiaists. And although I wasn't going to say anything about the seat, I did anyway and they were like "no problem" and they actually wrote "not to adjust the seats" in big red letters on the work order for the techs and they said they get these requests often. So right away I like these guys. The car is at the dealer now and I'm waiting for them to call me when it's ready. They shuttled me to work and will be picking me up. I'm crossing my fingers that everything goes well with the ventilation system. I also wanted them to look at the bottom body side molding towards the front of the car on the driver's side where it looks like one of the clip or fasteners that holds it in place has come loose and it sticks out just a bit. Anyay, I'm hoping that this will be the dealer who I can trust for future services.
