Default Rolled back with the e-brake on last night...

So, last night I pulled into a friends driveway that has a slight incline, pulled up the brake, turned off the car, let my foot off the brake and started rolling back. After doing this a couple times I put the car in gear and pulled up the e-brake as far as I could and it finally stayed in place. Does anyone know why this would have happened? The last 3 cars I've owned have been manuals and I have never had anything like this happen before.

Didn't yank it hard enough? Maybe it just needs to break in a little?

It was up one click from the highest position when it rolled back. It wasn't like half way or anything. Is that normal?

Hmm...that does not sound normal. But I'd try it a few more times before panicking. Because seriously, you just picked up your car a couple of days ago, right? The lining of the e-brake may just need to wear in a little.

I just checked the service manual. There is actually a parking brake break-in procedure. Click on the thumbnail below. There is also an adjustment procedure for the handle, but I suggest you try this first.

Here's the adjustment procedure, should it still not feel right after the break-in.

If it is only a slight incline it should normally only take a few clicks to hold the car. If you were all the way up then that means that the cable needs to be adjusted.

Always park the car in either 1st or reverse, it will prevent the car from rolling even if the brake fails completely.

That adjustment isn't as easy as I hoped it would be. Oddly while reading through it, I was flashing back to when I installed disc brakes on my mountain bike...spin the tire, scuffing sound, readjust, more scuffing, getting annoyed, more adjustments, still scuffs....

LOL. At least the Z is under warranty so the tech gets to be annoyed instead.

mine has exact same problem, barely any incline and you gotta pull it all the way up or you will roll.

My friends 2006 had same problem. he told me get the cable adjusted. I have just been to lazy to do it.

I'm sure she would if her car were an auto...but it isn't.

A little story about my ebrake experience in a mustang. I pull into my driveway one evening, set the ebrake, and go inside. The driveway has about a 15 degree incline. A few minutes later my door bell rings. The guy at the door says, "hey there's this mustang in the middle of street does it belong to you? Its blocking traffice." Not cool.

So there were two fails here. I didn't put the car in gear for some reason like I normally do. And the ebrake was holding with just enough force until I got inside the house then gave way letting the car roll backwards out into the middle of the street. I was lucky it didn't cause a wreck. Moral of the story is don't rely on your ebrake alone.
