yah, imho our Z's for front should be running ET30 and higher but due to most vendors wanting to sell as well to the G35/350Z/Genesis (?) fanclub + bbk clearance, they always source the agressive sizes... :ugh2:

Understeer bit me hard this morn on my skinny 245 fronts :(

I don't mind ET30+ if the wheel is wider. That way I would be using more of the useable space within the wheel well. I think in the rear the Time attack wheels are 12" ET40

m4a1mustang 04-26-2012 11:04 AM

Understeer is a PITA but it saves most inexperienced drivers.

wow, ET40 for rear...damn.. i completely agree about filling up the wheel wells. unless you're one of those hellaflushatoilet guy you want the wheels and tire tucked in a tad to minimize drag.

i completely removed it out of my G's setup. i drive VCD off in the snow. car doesn't oversteer either unless i tell her to.. very neutral. i want to do the same on the Z. she understeers a little bit when i push.

Car ok, just took a turn and felt mega understeer. Pretty much the first time I encountered understeer like that in my Z

Hey Ken :hello: Yes, I agree. Next set of tires I order will be 265 up front for sure.

well I consider myself "inexperienced" (no track time, first RWD car) :ugh2:

m4a1mustang 04-26-2012 11:10 AM

A lot of it is preference, too. Some prefer understeer to oversteer. Generally the idea is to get the car as close to neutral as you can and adjust it from there. I prefer a neutral car with a bias towards oversteer, which is where I am now with the 5.0.

My S2000 is a little like that, too. When I drive it I am turning off of the outside rear wheel. :)

i dont track my car but i do know my limits. :p it's good to check out your setup in the rain. much less speed needed to find out wat your car is like.

most crashes happen when things are loose on the road...like unexpected puddles, gravel, sand, any debris. driving in downpour will net you a lot of experience. :)

I dont drive the Z in the rain anymore, but when I first got it it was my only vehicle so I drove in anything chicago weather gave me. It did pretty well in downpour rain considering the facts (young male + rwd sports car + heavy rain + low visibility + lots of cars = :stirthepot: lol).

 whenever i do new setups i always drive my car in the rain...ideally downpours..even though i hate washing and detailing her. :ugh2: i do the usual... fast(er) take off, hard acceleration while turning, off-apex throttle up, etc. anything that would offset the balance and toss around cog. :)

Good to hear  First time I experienced oversteer was a few days ago on my way to work, I gunned it around a fast corner right before the office in the rain and the back went out a bit, VDC didn't help...only time I've unintentionally done that. The Conti DWSs have given me too much confidence in the rain.

That makes sense. One time i was going to the gym at 6:30 AM on a Sunday (so nobody out on the roads) and the road was wet from the night before. I was driving spiritly and I hit too much gas while making a left turn. There went the Z's A** and I was like :eekdance:. I had the car only for 3 months at that point.

kenchan 04-26-2012 11:25 AM

if one cannot control a drift while accelerating from standstill and turning, then one has no business with a rwd sports car. :D

disclaimer: drive safely on parking lots... :icon17:

disclaimer: the above dislaimer is a joke.

It's surprising how many people with RWD cars don't understand vehicle dynamics at all. "I don't understand why the back end would swing out in a turn if I spin the tires?" :shakes head:

It's like the tweens in Civics and stuff that get killed in high school because they think their car can easily take a 35 mph corner at 75... plow straight off into a tree and die.

Here, it's dumb kids trying to "drift, yo." Oops... off into the curb/forest/wall they go. Oh, look, I just got a vehicle risk adjustment on my insurance bill! :shakes head:

i think most people think the Z sways too much because they dont know the limits yet of the car. once you know where the car's rear breaks free then i think one would understand that the sway isn't all that bad. i thiink people get scared and start claiming it's the car, not the driver. :)

Most people also don't understand the difference between power-on oversteer and the actual balance of the car. Most people seem to get in trouble when they give too much throttle around a turn... or like I mentioned above when they try to drift.

LunaZ 04-26-2012 11:29 AM

Just add more front wing and dial in some negative camber.

(says the guy running NO front wing on his FF LOL!)

Yeah that was the first and only time I didn't intentionally break the rear end loose. but I knew right away it was me giving to much throttle on the turn and not the car being weird.

lol. yah, most kids just do crazy things without knowledge of driving, suspension tuning, risks associated with road conditions, etc. :ugh2: but then again i bet most cars out on the road are running under inflated tires ready to burst when making any quick manuvers... :icon14:

Which is why we are all supposed to drive DEFENSIVELY instead of offensively. There are lots of hazards out there. :)

thats why i dont dd the Z, to many idiots with a license

EDIT: that's my thing with gun laws. Illinois no concealed weapon laws and hard to get a license to own one, but they hand out driver's licenses to everybody just like that. A 16 year old with a car is more deadly then a guy carrying a gun. [end of rant]

^^ this is very true. :eekdance: especially these days with celphones and texting it's much worse than it was when the ofc were kids. we had no celphones, we had CB radio's if you were lucky. :rofl2: blackberries were fruits. i read a study on cnn yesterday(?) which found teenage girls are more distracted than boys while driving. :eekdance:

i too hate driving my Z during rush hr traffic. this is why if i take a day off to enjoy :driving: i only go out during geezer hour (9am-11:30am). i rarely take my car out late at night (drunk drivers), or very early morning hours (overhung drunk drivers). :ugh2: it's just not worth the trouble to me.

i worry about my G everyday when i take her to and back from work...but wat can i do? :(
