Press and Hold or Press and Let Go?

i was pressing and holding till i read this thread a few months ago never considered that you may not have to

I had an s2000 and in that car you have to hold....

didn't even know you can just push and let go until i read this thread

I press and hold everytime now after reading people had major problems press and releasing

So used to shutting engine using same button that i did same for a friends s2000. Felt kinda bad about cranking while engine running...forgot gotta use key to turn it off..

I always press and release immediately. It's just completing a circuit I think which triggers the locking mechanism to disarm.

Yeah holding it makes no difference I would think. I kind of test the theory in people's cars I valet. Holding for say 10 seconds even after the car has started does nothing.

The "push and hold required" cars do so out of a safety concern. (You don't want the computer cranking the car through the garage if something wrong and it managed to get in gear when you can't just let go to stop it). It's the same reason we have to hold down the brake. Holding down the brake was never required until these auto-cranking cars came around. I would be curious to know whether the "push and hold" cars like the Range Rover require the brake to be depressed.

Yeah the brake has to be depressed on them. For our Z though I don't think holding it makes a difference because if you have an auto your foot is on the brake and a manual the clutch has to be depressed during the whole start process. Even if the car is in neutral if you let the clutch out just after pressing the start button the car won't finish starting up.
