I haven't been able to find the complete text of NTB12-041, but it appears to be about a BCM firmware problem and has nothing to do with the steering lock.

LMBmikeZ 11-28-2012 10:20 AM

:shakes head: now I am disappointed I was hoping to go on my comp today finally to look at the TSB but seeing all the OP's posts I don't even think I need to now.......

OldGuy 11-28-2012 10:30 AM

Horray! Just got back from my buddy, the corner mechanic's, garage. He removed my steering lock fuse in 12 minutes flat and did so gratuitously---also too busy to let me take him to Applebee's for lunch! My dealership was making such a big (translates expensive) deal out this---saying an hour shop time with a lot of disassembly involved. I stood and watched my firend do it---nothing to it, just as stated on this forum. Thank goodness for this forum!

LMBmikeZ 11-28-2012 10:38 AM

 this forum is awesome and can help owners out in so many ways! Glad you got it taken care of before the problem happened.

I too am glad to hear about preemptive solutions. Good job.

I do sort of feel this subject is like talking about the Nigerian scam, only to have people look at you as this is news to them.

:icon18: I know I feel bad especially when you know how easy any one of the three fixes are to do! I am so happy I have had mine fixed now for this whole past driving season for me  get in and I have no worries about not being able to :driving: away

cossie1600 11-28-2012 04:17 PM

I got REV E!!! The dealer billed Nissan $470 or something for that part

LMBmikeZ 11-28-2012 08:03 PM

Nice

Always better having some one else get the bill instead of you to! :D

Face 11-28-2012 10:16 PM

I just installed my little bypass kit, after sitting on it for 2 months for no good reason. Took all of 3 minutes to put it in. I'm gonna miss that steering lock sound, lol. Nice I'll never have to worry again.

What were you waiting for! would have sucked if it went out while you were waiting to instal the bypass! I did the same to mine but I installed it the day I got mine!

Face 11-28-2012 10:33 PM

Tell me about it... I'd have kicked myself in the nuts if I had the solution to the problem sitting in my glove box when the lock went out.

Regardless, it's taken care of now!

LMBmikeZ 11-28-2012 10:48 PM

 now you can start it up every time with less to fear!

fullmonty 11-30-2012 06:14 PM

Picked up my Z today after having it fixed. Rev.E I'll be pulling the fuse in the morning

hot370z 11-30-2012 11:25 PM

As a my matter of curiosity, why did you consider it necessary to remove the fuse if the dealer had replaced the failed part? Did you fear the replacement part would be just as vulnerable to failure as the original part?

cossie1600 12-01-2012 09:12 AM

It failed four times already (rev A, B, C, D). It's a $500 gamble to see if there will be REV F....

OldGuy 12-01-2012 09:17 AM

That's an outrage. Nissan should be ashamed for not recalling all these Z's and getting the problem cleaned up.

cossie1600 12-01-2012 10:41 AM

Too bad we don't have enough owners and failures, else there should be a class action

Even though my car was still under warranty and saved me from paying $500. I didn't want to go through the hassle of it again. When i had it replaced it took about a month since the part was on back-order so that pissed me off. Taking out the fuse takes all the worrying away.

I think it's time we Z owners looked into this. Would anyone else be interested in persuing this?

Just retired from practicing law for nearly 40 years. Sorry...

My link is "key" light went on

UPDATE: I just heard from nissan this morning. I pleeded my case to them stating that I was unaware that this part is ONLY covered under the bumper to bumper warrenty. As my car has already passed the 36,000 mile warrenty coverage, it will cost me $1135,29 to get my car back!!! That is with a discount too. rev2 to rev4 re-programmed

Steering lock module: $850
Labor: $300
Re-programming: $400
towing: $185

REMOVE YOUR FUSE BEFORE YOU END UP WITH THE SAME BILL!!!!

kenchan 12-03-2012 11:37 AM

see if you can revive your steering lock by tapping at it. then pull fuse or cut the brown wire.

or buy your steering lock from courtesyparts or similar online for about $500. follow DIY 'how to replace dreaded steering lock.' there's nothing to program. just remove, plug new one in, and start car.

i know from experience as i replaced mine to RevC when i made the DIY from RevB.
i will be cutting the wire and use revb when my revc dies.

All I can say is wow. First off, that module is only around $500, so I'm not sure what the $350 dollar mark up is all about. Labor is literally a 30min job. There is a DIY thread on here about replacing the steering lock, so $300 dollars in labor?!?! Please. As far as I know there is no re-programming involved. There has been several people on here that replaced the lock their self, and I don't recall them ever having to re-program anything, so $400 dollars? Really? Sounds like the dealer is screwing you over :shakes head:

Dwight Frye 12-03-2012 06:04 PM

You guys who are being charged $800-$850 for the lock module plus $300-$400 labor are getting screwed about like the 53% of us that pay taxes are about to get screwed by Obama and the Democrats.
It's a $500 part and about a half hour in labor. The warranty on my car expired in September even though I only had about 26K miles on it. I installed the $50 harness in just a few minutes time before the lock had a chance to fail.
If I had been stranded somewhere and had to pay towing fees plus outrageous repair charges I would have invented some new 12 letter words.

As far as I can tell, the only "re-programming" required is clearing any DTCs that may have been set. But I have only been able to find the installation procedure for SLUs in GT-Rs.
All I can find in the 2009 370Z FSMs is "replace SLU" but no detailed procedure. Whether that's because the info is not there for security reasons or my mad search skillz have failed me, I dunno.

 not you to! I thought you would have done this a long time ago.

Baer383 12-03-2012 09:21 PM

You know I made that "pulling the fuse" thread to help people to avoid spending allot of money on this and I guess it is falling on deaf ears cause a ton of people are not doing it,I guess they think it won't happen to them.

mayday813 12-03-2012 10:23 PM

Has anyone with the Rev E steering lock installation had a failure? It seems most the failures have occurred on 2009 and 2010 models, any failures on 2011 models?

They don't make a "E" lock the newest and most recent is the "D" lock, and I don't think that there has been a failure of it.:hello:

danegrey 12-04-2012 05:38 AM

all I can say is ouch..... that's a bit
when you were talking to Nissan, was it the dealer or was it Nissan....
