No need to peel. Stick your head in the footwell and look up, it's visible without removing anything.

I am hoping someone smart will crack one of these open and figure out how to fix these things with a soldering iron and/or an ISO programmer.

Where are you oh electronics guru wizard of the Z inner workings world?

Help us mister wizard!

Done: See my recent post of under DIY "Steering lock entry and immobiliser delete".
There may be no photos but the instructions/knowledge/reasoning are clear for any 1/2
competent DIY/mechanic ! It just takes courage (or a spare lock) to do the job.
I was not prepared to wait for Nissan to dither (and blame me --- again !) so ... job done 2 months ago. I then disconnected the lock and its associated lump of iron as being a real reliability liability: One disastrous immobility is enough. I need the car.

The Panasonic microswitches are available from your electronics store if you really need to fix the lock itelf....but I have no faith in any Nissan electronic steering lock, updated or not....so instead of a lock I have a secret fuel cut-off. Any aggressor will get 50 yards down the road and stop. Maybe not as good, but reliable. I also have a master switch, with key, and an aircraft circuit breaker for long term parking.

there are only 7 reports under 2009 and 2010 for this issue on the NHSTA. long way to go before a recall will even be considered with that small number. If the issue occurs report it! In the meantime my Z is on its way and im going to look into these DIY with my mechanic I guess.

Default Steering Lock

2009 370Z
33,000 miles

Steering Lock problem. Key unlocks but will not start. Warranty just ran out last week... $751 with diagnostic charge before taxes. I understand that there was a recall on the on the GT-R for the same problem, and that this issue has affected parts up to revision C of the steering lock. This is a known issue that Nissan needs to address with all costumers.

If you turn off your car and the yellow key symbol is on, you're screwed. You don't have to wonder if your car will start every time you get in.
