You won't rub off the metal plating which should be fairly beefy. You can basically use anything for metal finishes as long as it doesn't remove material (i.e. sandpaper or grinding). Preserving the stock texture is going to be difficult though.

Maybe someone leaned against the car with riveted jeans? I've seen that leave some gnarly marks.
