2012s on lots....where are the oil coolers?
So, now that we finally have confirmation on the style of cooler to be offered on the Z, I want to offer up some thoughts. There is going to be a lot of bickering on both sides before long I am sure, but based on my experience with the handful of cars I've owned, here are some thoughts.
* The Oil-to-water cooler will probably NOT be sufficient for serious track use. On the other hand, guys that don't have much experience out there will probably find it perfectly suitable. We will almost certainly have water temps as the concern now, rather than oil temps. I am curious to see if Nissan adjusts limp mode, as hitting 280* oil temps on a water cooled system would generate huge problems.... * On the other hand, it is absolutely excellent for most users. You get great daily-driveability, nice warm oil, and none of the (HUGE) risk that an air-cooled system generates. Apologies to those doing this, but it's absolutely an awful decision to run an air-cooled system without a pressure gauge. The risk of catastrophic engine failure from a fitting issue or a rock is huge, and definitely not worth it. The water-cooled system will only result in a coolant leak in the same situation--not really a big deal. Another nice perk is upgrading a radiator can help, and is not nearly as much a warranty concern as an air-to-oil cooler. * It remains to be seen what other changes have been made to the system-- I am interested to see for sure whether this system just taps straight into the old radiator setup, or if they have changed anything else...regardless, this marks a huge step forward for Z drivers. Truly a shame Nissan didn't pony up the extra $30 a unit to put this on from the start...would have been a lot better for everyone. Looks like Nissan has gone with an oil to water cooler tapped of the current system. Edit: page 5 for pics, reproduced here http://www.the370z.com/attachments/n...oil-cooler.jpg |
Oh, did they add a factory-standard oil cooler for 2012? That will be interesting.
|
I was under the impression there were no changes for the 2012 model? Where did they say an oil cooler is standard now?

Hmm, will be interesting to see how the retrofit options work out for the factory oil:water and brake cooling ducts.
|
Anyone have their hands on a 2012 Owner's Manual? I'd like to see the listed oil capacity compared with previous years. That would give us an idea of whether or not there's an oil cooler and what its capacity is.

I am going for a "service engine soon" * light today. I'll look for 2012's.

Yeah that is what it looks like if the capacity is the same. Hmmmm

Nice thing about a/w is easy retrofit is likely. |

I think a number of us have them on order, but nobody has theirs in hand yet.
|
Several people have posted that they have them, and lots of dealers have them in stock...just none near me.
|
I have mine on order. I know Bonzo says his will arrive November 18th. Bonzo is the first person i know of to receive a delivery date for the 2012's. I ordered mine a week after him, plus my salesman said it would be late November early December for my girl Vanity to be delivered. My VIN should be given to me soon.
|
I bet it's a dealer add on option, and I also bet the dealers will screw up and not install it on the cars for a while until it gets pointed out to them, a lot. lol

I'll stop at the dealership today on the way home from work . They have a pw base with sport pkg.

I kinda hope it's oil:water like that one post in the locked thread says, although it may be a relatively crappy oil:water unit though (as mentioned in the other thread, perhaps just water running through a filter adapter plate). We already have good aftermarket kits for add-on oil:air. The stock water cooling system seems to have more than enough excess capacity to help out, and it would reduce warm-up times as well.

You gotta figure the unit would add less than $30 to nissans cost on the car, too |
yah, i too think its just an extension to the existing cooling system.

I looked at the nissan home page and did a build of a 370Z and a Nismo. Under the Standard Features there is NOT an oil cooler listed nor is there an option for one.

I made this thread the other day and so far no one has posted to it. Zero. http://www.the370z.com/nissan-370z-p...ur-2012-a.html |

It takes less than two days to build the car, less than a month for the boat to arrive. The rest is just dead time.
|
Just came back from dealership. I got a 2012 brochure. Read it and saw no mention of an oil cooler on the spec sheet. I did see mention of brake ducting. So I asked the parts guy for a price and he has no listing of said part.
I am going to start a new thread with this. |
How funny would it be if my joke post turned out to be accurate:icon17:

I'm just trying to figure out how long all this stuff takes, from how many they build a day (or week or what ever), from the build date to actual delivery. It may take 2 days to build one as you say, but because of the way a production line works, that really doesn't tell us anything. It probably takes GM 2 days to build a single Chevy 1500 from start to finish, but off the line they crank out more than one a minute. With less than 10,000 Z's sold per year, we know Nissan is not cranking out this car out like that. Kicking *** they are probably making 200 a week, tops. This is pure speculation on my part. That's why I'm trying to figure it out, so I know and don't have to speculate. |

Since we only know of 1 on this forum as of right now, we really need danegrey to snap us some pictures. As more cars filter in we will get a definitive answer. |
