The part numbers may be off then, but we will get them eventually. I am positive that the picture is right.

Ooooh burn. They need to just equip the oil cooler and shut everybody up, especially the magazines.

Looks like the same cooler that comes standard on the 370 in hot climates (middle east)

That part number is wrong as I stated earlier (I think it was in this thread). It refers to the aftermarket Nismo oil cooler.

Red__Zed 10-18-2011 04:31 PM

So, now that we finally have confirmation on the style of cooler to be offered on the Z, I want to offer up some thoughts. There is going to be a lot of bickering on both sides before long I am sure, but based on my experience with the handful of cars I've owned, here are some thoughts.
*
The Oil-to-water cooler will probably NOT be sufficient for serious track use. On the other hand, guys that don't have much experience out there will probably find it perfectly suitable. We will almost certainly have water temps as the concern now, rather than oil temps. I am curious to see if Nissan adjusts limp mode, as hitting 280* oil temps on a water cooled system would generate huge problems....
*
On the other hand, it is absolutely excellent for most users. You get great daily-driveability, nice warm oil, and none of the (HUGE) risk that an air-cooled system generates. Apologies to those doing this, but it's absolutely an awful decision to run an air-cooled system without a pressure gauge. The risk of catastrophic engine failure from a fitting issue or a rock is huge, and definitely not worth it. The water-cooled system will only result in a coolant leak in the same situation--not really a big deal. Another nice perk is upgrading a radiator can help, and is not nearly as much a warranty concern as an air-to-oil cooler.
Water cooled systems are going to tend to be more consistent in controlling temps...which lets you keep the oil in the optimal range.

*
It remains to be seen what other changes have been made to the system-- I am interested to see for sure whether this system just taps straight into the old radiator setup, or if they have changed anything else...regardless, this marks a huge step forward for Z drivers. Truly a shame Nissan didn't pony up the extra $30 a unit to put this on from the start...would have been a lot better for everyone.

So the aftermarket coolers that everyone has now are air-to-oil coolers, correct?

:iagree: someone with an air cooled oil cooler mentioned something like his oil temp was steady at 180F on the street.

i'd like to be in 220 range (100C or higher) to rid moisture...

Yes

b1adesofcha0s 10-18-2011 04:41 PM

So if Nissan does adjust the limp mode, then would that make it more difficult to retrofit this oil to water cooler?

kenchan 10-18-2011 04:43 PM

do we hear from people in the middle east (where this unit appears to be standard for their region) complaining about limp mode from high oil temp?

I haven't seen any of that crew tracking their cars

kenchan 10-18-2011 04:48 PM

i can almost see some idiot putting heatsinks on his oil filter and call it an oil cooler. :icon17: does kalecoauto.com sell it?

Red__Zed 10-18-2011 05:05 PM

Gonna do some math when I get back tonight.

Curious if anyone has any numbers for heat dissipation off the rad as it sits, or Max dissipation?

Z1 may have some data as they were testing the OEM rad v. the CSF rad to build some logs to promote the CSF rad, I never got the data.

Red__Zed 10-18-2011 05:13 PM

I will get in touch and see what they've got.

I'm thinking its cause you will be passing your coolant which is suppose to be cooling your engine threw a cooler that has 280 degree oil flowing in it.

pretty much this. you basically are gonna stop cooling your engine when the oil temps get that high.

serious limp mode doesn't kick in currently til 300. that could be catastrophic.

Guard Dad 10-18-2011 06:51 PM

Looking forward to seeing someone do a DIY retrofit.

will be interesting to see if:
A: nissan will sell it without a 2012 VIN
B: a different radiator arrangement will be needed

semtex 10-18-2011 07:17 PM

If something this cheap and simple really does work, it almost makes Nissan even more of a douche for not equipping 370Zs with this from the get go. I remember back in 2009 when a certain member of this forum who also works for Nissan defended his employer on the issue, telling us all how equipping the Z with an oil cooler would significantly raise cost, etc. Yeah, so much for that argument.

they saved about $30 a car by not including it:shakes head:

to be fair, to keep with their margin call, it would have increased the price by more than $100

Will these use standard Nissan style oil filters or a new part?

ah nevermind -- i checked.

+1, I might have bought one.

Noticed several members that have already picked up 2012 models, but we still have no cooler details--anyone able to snap pics yet?

Looks like Nissan has gone with an oil to water cooler tapped of the current system.

You don't need to be above 100C to rid moisture from the oil. Back when the Z06 had air/oil coolers, there was never any UOA's that showed too water in the oil that I recall anyone posting. They ran 130-160* normally.

I think you guys will see coolant temps and oil temps that are MUCH more stable than you are used to. In my car, the oil and coolant are usually within 2-4* just cruising. When you thrash on it, oil temps will rise above coolant temps by a good margin. When you sit in traffic, coolant temps rise above oil temps.

However, it is a lot more stable, and I LOVE the fact that the liquids sloshing through my heads are of much more similar temperature, etc. It just seems better to me.

Red__Zed 10-18-2011 08:39 PM

import, the reason it would be a problem in the Z would be the fact that the car only holds 5 qts of oil....

Somehow I just glossed over that one. That is a VERY important caveat. What is the engine coolant system like?

PS. I would ASSUME (I know...) that Nissan tested this, to make sure it would actually do most of what people seem to hope it will?
