buying Z in CA, moving to Las Vegas

Hi all, i need your wisdom on this. I'm going to buy a new Z next month in North Cali. because I'm currently living there but within first half of next year I'll move to Las Vegas. My concerns are with title and registration a new car in Vegas, will I have to pay a very high fee in Vegas when bringing a car in from another state? What else should I be concerned with as far as DMV goes?

Nevada will not require the smog requirements that you are used to. Nv is a cheap state concerning permits and taxes, so price the same car there via the net. It might make sense to buy it in the silver state.

Things are a little more complicated: I reside in N. CA currently and plan to sell my current car for an acquaintance locally and then buy the Z.

Buying a Z in Vegas while I'm still reside in CA will not solve the problem since I will have to registered it with CA's DMV. Waiting to trade in (or sell) when I'm already moved to Vegas is alos not an option and that's the rub, because I've already promised to sell to a friend here in CA.

My concern is that buying the Z in CA and have it already registered with CA's DMV for a whole year then will move to Vegas in April 2012. I don't want to re-register twice at two places and wonder whether I can keep the CA registration while living in Vegas for a whole year before registering it with LV' DMV. Also does LV's DMV imposes any levy ie. high fee applied to an out of state car.

Any solution/tip to my dilemma are welcome and appreciated.

i bought mine in oregon and have it shipped here to vegas and registered here. there's no fee to registered an out of state car. they just look at the price u purchase and pay the tax on for it. I think you can register in CA and still drive the car here in vegas. I know alot of people that does that.

Wow, a Vegas resident. Thanks mate for answering.
In your case, you paid the NV tax on the car so the state of Nevada didn't feel they are cheated on the profit off the sale. In my case though, I'll have bought it from CA and will have paid the tax to CA state THEN I'll take it to Vegas and I would like to know how they "feel" about that (penalty wise).

Former Ca resident who moved to Vegas 5 yrs ago

First of all you are making this a much bigger deal than it will be. When the time comes you just go to the DMV and register the car here in Vegas. They will charge you the same as they charge local resisdents. Simple as that. There is no conspiracy against outsiders. I believe my regestration was 500+ on my 370z. At the time I moved here my regestration was only a difference of 5 dollars on my 280z and 300zx; no not much of a price difference between here and Ca.

As for driving here in Vegas with Ca drivers lic and registeration I do not recomend it. You have a 90 day grace period and after that IF you get caugh you are looking at huge penelties. Baically if you live here for lets say 6mo and then get caught, you then have to pay a 500 dollar fine plus backwards regestration for 6mo's plus a few other fees. It's just better to do it with in the first few weeks of moving here.

There are tons of cops here compared to Ca. I remember living in southern Ca I would see a cop maybe every few weeks. Here in Vegas you see 5+ cops driving every day. I was honestly very surprised by this. In Ca street racing is an almost daily occurance where as here it's very rare due to the cop presence. The good thing is they aren't after speeders most of the time and are in fact looking for drunks. We have a very high amount of drunk drivers here and because of the Vegas life the drunk population is almost 24-7 versus other areas where it's only in the early mornings. Most cops here are pretty decent BUT they do look for out of state tags, they do implement speed traps, and they do use aircraft monitoring. So again, I say better to get the tags changed over sooner rather than later.

Oh, by the way, Red lights here are just a recomendation and by no means mean that people will stop. It's amazing how many red light runners they have here. So watch yourself at intersections.

Also, watch your speed on the fwy. In Ca 80mph is the norm and if you are going slower you better be to the right. It's quite the opposite here in Vegas. Most people drive under the speed limit. No joke. I'll often times find myself flying by people on the fwy making it look like I'm speeding only to look at my speedometer to see I'm going 65mph. To make matters worse people WILL drive 55mph in the fast lane, including big rigs. Drivers over all in this town are horrible. I went from being a very offensive driver in Ca to being a very defensive driver here in Vegas.

Thank you thank you for all the tips/advices. Yes, I was a little over worried about this. I even called LV DMV this morning and support technician said the same thing: No extra tax on out of state car registration, unlike CA.

Hey while your at DMV pick up a CCW or Concealed weapons permit too. I think it is cheap and valid in many other states as well. Or don't. Just a thought.

I would buy it there drive it here, when you buy it there get a po box and change your license over to that po box... then you dont have to deal with as much crap as you do here in cali.

also if you buy it here most states with lower tax percentages will except the transfer and not charge, thats what i did with my GTI when i was active, i transferred the title so i would get harassed about tints and mods. And if i did get pulled over i was "visiting" there is no duration limit for visiting.

yah, registering a car to another state is not a big deal.

chances are the taxes you pay in CA is MUCH higher than any other state (well, i dont have data but CA seems to be one of the highest) so you get sort of a discount for the year you're living in vegas at a lower registration fee.

@memorylasts: If registration the z to a PO box is really possible, I'll be buying my PO box on my next week's trip to Vegas in a heart beat.
