To Pass or Not To Pass

Situation:

Cop car, cruising 3-5 mph UNDER limit.

Do you pass, or deal with it until he turns off?:ugh2:

I passed one once and got popped for it. He stated that I was tailgating him so badly he couldn't see my headlights. I call BS. I think he was just out to give me a hard time. Granted, he didn't ticket me and that was cool and all, but still.......

McFrostyJ 07-26-2011 07:09 PM

Pass

shadoquad 07-26-2011 07:10 PM

It depends on surrounding traffic. If traffic is heavy, I probably stay behind and deal. If there's plenty of open space, I pass, never going more than 10 above the limit and giving the blue boy plenty of space.

Rui Z 07-26-2011 07:12 PM

honk

USMCASA 07-26-2011 07:13 PM

pass

Baer383 07-26-2011 07:27 PM

If he is going 3-5 under the limit here in Ga. he will not only be passed, someone will probably get under him and put him in the wall.:excited:

dad 07-26-2011 07:39 PM

Stay behind him/her, it's not worth the BS if your pulled over!

Same here except I would drive right at the speed limit. Usually, I would just stay behind though. I always like to keep cop cars ahead of me instead of behind me.

BuckeyeZ 07-26-2011 07:44 PM

Pass..... but wouldn't tailgate. That is what obviously got you pulled over. I try to keep a safe distance and be respectful of all drivers.....even the ones afraid to pass. I have never been pulled over doing this.

What irritates my about the local police here is they will sit 5mph under the speed limit in the FAST lane. It's like they are daring you to pass (which by the book is illegal to pass on the right). I still pass them!

In Ga. it is legal to pass on the right that's why this pass/not pass thing really doesn't apply hear.

I don't think that's the point of the question. The point IMO is would you rather be safe and stay behind or risk potentially getting pulled over for something while/after passing.

Cmike2780 07-26-2011 08:07 PM

Pass but not over the speed limit. They do this on purpose to bait drivers or if they're eyeing someone up ahead.

then what the hell is the point of the question!!

He said the cop was going 3-5 under the speed limit and did not specify what lane the cop was in so to sit behind the cop and drive under the speed limit would be foolish,so to pass him doing the speed limit whats the problem there isn't one.:shakes head:

There's a question right there. Do you pass going speed limit or do you try going a little over the speed limit? People have been on both sides here already. Going 3-5 mph above someone is going to be a really slow pass. Do you do that or go 5-10 over and hope the cop doesn't care and lets you go?

Red__Zed 07-26-2011 08:24 PM

I don't pass cops unless they are going really slow.

Same here. I also usually slow down just so they can stay ahead of me, even if it means going under the speed limit. This has saved me from getting pulled over a couple of times.

kenchan 07-26-2011 08:28 PM

I would set cruise at speed limit and let it be.

cptspeed 07-26-2011 08:39 PM

cruise works at 30 mph too BTW. use it every night on the last leg of my drive home.

2004YZFR1 07-26-2011 08:45 PM

Pass him, and show off your nice shiny Z!

Cheech 07-26-2011 08:49 PM

There's absolutely nothing wrong with passing anybody if they are not doing the speed limit, including highway patrol (assuming driving conditions are safe, not icy, snowy, torrential down pour, etc). You can be ticketed for doing the speed limit if conditions are un-safe.

It always irks me off when people slow down below the speed limit when they see a cop when there are no reasons for it (general highway driving scenario).

Generally you won't be ticketed up to 4mph (9kph) over the speed limit. I might be the exception, but have never been ticketed for driving that much over the limit. I've been pulled over for doing 109 in a 100 zone, but respectfully discussed it and was let go.

shaun66 07-26-2011 08:53 PM

Around here all they do is speed everywhere! Bastards.

Corporate666 07-26-2011 08:56 PM

Are you guys serious? You *wouldn't* pass a cop who was going 3-4mph UNDER the speed limit?

I drive 5 over with cops around all day long. They are people just like you and me... if you are driving safely and attentively, a few mph over the limit is no problem at all, and 10mph is usually safe on the highway around here.

I have passed plenty of cops a few mph over the limit when they are going that speed - no problem at all, never been pulled over.

Nothing more irritating than a herd of ******* all pacing a cop because everyone is too scared to pass.

theDreamer 07-26-2011 09:03 PM

This happened on my way home tonight.
Cop was doing probably 65 and everyone was just holding back. Now I have a radar detector and knew he was not running his (though he could turn it on), but I passed and went on my way. Cop under the speed limit I am passing.

Maybe my outlook on this is clouded(b/c my dad is a Sheriff)and he told me to just drive normal as if they aren't there.

So that's what I do :icon17:

90 ST 07-26-2011 09:15 PM

Pass! No question.

chuckd05 07-26-2011 09:16 PM

I regularly pass cops and the 5-6 cars on the hwy that are scared to do so, going 5 mph over limit ...

to me you just look suspicious or scared if he is going under the speed limit and you don't pass him.. My gf used to think I was crazy now she does the same. I have never been pulled over in that situation and I've passed over 10-15 cops at least..

b1adesofcha0s 07-26-2011 10:07 PM

I do have other stuff on my car that could get me ticketed so i try to stay as far away from them as I can.

happytheman 07-26-2011 10:19 PM

The cop in question was in the slow lane, hence the pass that I made.

I like Kenchan's response. I tend to have my cruise control on all the time anyways, so this tends to work just fine. HOWEVER...one time when I was (in band camp..(sorry, couldn't resist)) driving through the very bottom of Illinois, I had my cruise control set and apparently the speed limit had gone down... I was busy listening to a book on CD, wasn't paying attention, and passed a cop on the left and got popped. UNFORTUNATELY I was apparently driving on an expired drivers license and he very nearly took me to jail! There's more to the story, but I won't bore you with details.

I will say this much: Getting pulled over did not stop me from passing when safe. I see no reason to pile up behind the Police cruiser due to a choice that they make to drive a bit slow.

Im with you 100% on every comment you made. I drive the interstate 40mi each way every day. Sometimes in the Z, mostly in my DD Jeep. 10mph over is safe on the interstate.

I get annoyed at the people who brake and jam up all lanes because of the cop. I'll pass up to 5mph over the posted limit and have never had an issue.

FL 4Motion 07-26-2011 10:29 PM

always pass and even drive up to 5 mph over the speed limit. Never been hassled by a cop over it.

Now, obviously it goes w/o saying, don't tailgate him and don't be a **** about trying to pass him, esp if it's heavy traffic.

After all, it's not like it's against the law to pass someone going under the speed limit.

FromG2Z 07-26-2011 11:05 PM

Happy...that's pretty easy. If I am driving Zena, I continue to follow until he turns off. If i am in my civic or Odyssey, I pass. I just don't need the extra attention in my z.

Lemonjello 07-26-2011 11:33 PM

Definitely pass, but I dont do more than 5-8 over the limit in doing so.

Ridgerunner 07-26-2011 11:35 PM

I was following a Colorado state trooper in left lane on interstate; he was doing 60 in a 65 and was on radio and obviously not paying attention. So after about 5 minutes, I get in right lane and pass him at 65on the right upon which he puts the blue lights on me and pulls me over. I ask what's up and he tells me, "you changed lanes without a turn signal." Have you ever heard of pulling someone over for no turn signal on the interstate? He said he would let it go with a warning; I felt like telling him, give yourself a ticket for blocking the left lane a$$hole. Just hassling me because I was driving a sports car (93 MR2 Turbo) i guess.

11Thumper 07-27-2011 12:18 AM

Pass if safe and really need the extra 4-5mph, otherwise just deal with it.

JrumMusic 07-27-2011 12:22 AM

NEVER PASS A COP, i got pulled over once because a cop was doing exactly like you just said, like 5 mph under, and i got pulled over, he was like "DIDNT YOU KNOW YOUR NEVER SUPPOSED TO PASS A COP". SMH.

shadow2k 07-27-2011 12:42 AM

Ummmm...why would you be scared of not breaking the law because a cop is around?

I've been driving 5mph over the speed limit for almost 20yrs now. I do not slow down for cops, whether they are in front of me, behind me, or pointing a radar gun right at me. Never been pulled over for such minimal bending of the laws. It's when you break the law that they get their panties in a bunch. 5mph is simply bending it to your will.

definitionxmk 07-27-2011 02:16 AM

roll up next to him, pace, and ask "One time"... if he shakes his head, oh well, you tried =)

Nismo221 07-27-2011 02:24 AM

I pass them even if they are driving the speed limit. If they are not going at least 5 mph over they are getting passed lol.
