I pass almost always. Now, if he is AT the limit, I'm not going to pass, or tail-gate.

However, if cop is a few mph under the limit, I will pass. UNLESS I note him running I/O on the cars that pass him. If I keep getting I/O hits when people pass him, no. I won't. Just because he is obviously desperate for a ticket and my window tint is a bit dark, or he may find something else that pisses him off about me/my car.

Ran a cop in his modded (lowered/catback) G8 GT in my WS6 once. Cool guy even though he lost :driving:

That cop is just an asshole, cops do not always speed nor do they go below the speed all the time. They are humans, just because he is a cop does not give him special privilege to pull you over because you passed him.

Flash your lights until he gets out of the way.

Eric 07-27-2011 07:33 AM

I'll pass, I won't even slow down if I'm not traveling over 75mph. I've never had an issue traveling 10mph over the speed limit. On back roads, town roads, and city streets I'll obey the limits within a few mph.

MarkeZ 07-27-2011 07:49 AM

I came up on a cop doing 5 mph under the speed limit. He was driving one of those mustang cop cars. I went to pass him and when i got even with him he gave me a thumbs up and then he floored it. Yeah I wanted to see if I could catch him but I didn't want to push my luck.

Further down the road, I took an exit to get gas and the same cop was there. He came up and checked out my car complimented me on it and noticed that I didn't have a front license plate. I thought he was gonna give me a ticket for it but he said if it was his car he wouldn't put one either. LOL

DrEvil 07-27-2011 07:55 AM

I was on Delaware Hwy 1 last year and watch a state trooper follow a woman in the left lane for about two miles and at least 8 mph below the 65 limit. I was eventually able to pass in the rifht lane and continue on. In jersey she would have been pulled over and ticketed for not keeping right. Yes , so I did pass a Delaware trooper at the speed limit.
BTW in Jersey , we call them "left lane dicks"

Drove past a cop doing 70 in a 50, he was doing 70 ish also but was pulling a horse trailer behind the tahoe. Not sure if i was being ballsy or dumb but im leaning towards dumb, did not get pulled over.

takjak2 07-27-2011 09:56 AM

If I come up on traveling cops I'll hang back, waiting for him (or her) to find someone else to pull over. Better to keep eyes on and account for them than have 'em come up from behind later.

This is the correct answer. In drivers ed we learned it is only ok to pass when you NEVER EXCEED the speed limit, and also when it is safe to do so and you have very far visibility. If the cop is going 4 under the limit you most likely won't have enough speed to pass quickly if you go the limit, so in this case I would say don't pass. However, if you had a really really long stretch of flat road and plenty of time to pass slowly, I would go the speed limit and very slowly pass the cop just to piss him off because technically you aren't doing anything illegal.

Brutal 370Z 07-27-2011 10:25 AM

NEVER PASS A COP!!!!!!!!! why risk it? just to get to your destination 5 minutes earlier!?!? not worth the risk of getting pulled over imo. I was in a similar situation, and when i was about to pass (at maybe 2km/h faster than he was going), he flashed his lights and told me to hang back. regardless of whether or not your exceeding the speed limit when doing so, a lot of cops just like to break balls, especially if your a young guy in a nice car.

I completely disagree, a cop has no reason to pull you over if you are doing the speed limit and passing a slower, be it a cop or something else.
Now if a cop flashed his lights at you when you tried to pass, then there was probably another reason which I could understand. And to your point of being somewhere 5 minutes faster, why show up 5 minutes later when you are within the legal limit?

Yeah but they might also inspect the heck out of your car as you pass by to find PC to pull you over.

Which is fine, in Texas you are required to run a front plate but I do not so when I pass them I take that risk, but it seems that a lot of people here think passing a cop is actually illegal when it is not.

My point is that some cops (it could be just in my area) would pull you over for passing them regardless of whether or not you're still within the legal limit. That's why I just think its not worth the hassle. No disrespect to cops, but there are a handful of them that are on a power trip, and get a kick out of breaking balls.

This is why I wouldn't do it. If he is going more than 3-5 mph under the limit then I will definitely pass going right at the limit.

:iagree:

That's my exact point. Some cops are just a-holes. That's a fact. Some cities in my area are NOTORIOUS for cops like that. So my point is, yes it IS legal to pass a cop safely and within the speed limit, but like I said, I wouldn't do it because I don't want the attention and don't want to give him a REASON whatsoever to pull me over...

^ esp when they see sports cars. Then they see a relatively young guy driving it? Recipe for disaster. Then you PASS him? ........ why risk it?

Pharmacist 07-27-2011 03:24 PM

sounds like america is a police state or something. Thankfully over here you can't get pulled over without probable cause. Any charges, no matter how guilty get dismissed in court if no probable cause was there for the traffic stop.

Actually, traffic laws vary wildly from state to state in the :usa:, and so do police attitudes. In MD, I get away with a lot that I couldn't get away with in VA.

Vapiano 07-27-2011 03:42 PM

It really depends on the cop, you can never guess what mood they are going to be in, it's like playing Russian Roulette. I have had cops gesture to me to do wheelies while riding my motorcycle on the highway. I obliged, they thanked me for the show and went on my merry way.

I'm in Toronto too. The thing is that even if they don't have probable cause, and they want to give you a hard time, you still have to show up and fight it which is a pain in the a**, and a huge waste of time. You'll end up spending way more time trying to get rid of the charge than the time you would have saved if you got away with going faster lol

Armonster 07-27-2011 03:46 PM

Gotta love the formula though. Give people big cars with big engines, roads with wide lanes that could easily handle high speeds, and then set a speed limit that is about 15-30mph too slow to be a "maximum" speed (depending on the road).

That way, everyone drives faster than the speed limit by default. And then the police have the option of pulling over whoever they want.

Seriously, if you drive 55 on the interstate around Atlanta, you will die. In practice, it's 70 minimum, but 80 is standard.

Pelican170 07-27-2011 03:47 PM

Im assuming this is a highway scenario lol and not a backroad or something where your behind the cop and your going to go around on a passing lane to pass him lol. Highway scenario - pass...

Brutal 370Z 07-27-2011 03:48 PM

Totally disagree. Sometimes you might want to just go with the flow for a while and see why the cop's going so slow. Sometimes there's something to be said for maintaining a small target on yourself, even if you've done nothing wrong, because a hassle is a hassle. Being pulled over for 20 minutes when you've got somewhere to go sucks, whether you end up with a ticket or not.

Yea thats why I always throw back a strong gin and tonic before I get behind the wheel... Why not buzz up to the legal limit?

joking.... totally joking. I never drink a drop before driving

Where are you guys that you see all these cops going UNDER the limit? In NOVA, I can tell which are the cops and which arent cause they're the ones going at least 15-20 mph over the limit when noone else is.

Second, file a complain with the department for harassment if you are mad.

That wasn't in Baltimore. You could get shot for accidentally sneezing on one in the midst of this hot summer.

They didn't even ask me! but Honestly because I did not want to go to jail for something stupid I knew just by the way these guys where acting If I where to try and stop them I'd probably get shot or taser'd these cops where fishing I could clearly tell but honestly It's not worth the mission and as far as filing a report I would love to but I did not get any badge numbers I guess cause I was too tired to even really take in the hole situation till after it happened here when you get pulled over you need to be very careful the way you speak to police officers because they are very quick to pin something on you like resisting arrest or obstruction of justice that is just the way they are...its very easy to tell tell they have a us(officers) against them(citizens) mentality It really sucks but there is really nothing you can do in that position but say yes officer. For example my brother was once arrested because he got pulled over for no reason and he was with his wife the officer began flirting with his wife and my brother did not take kindly to that so he let the officer know "if your gonna write me a ticket write it but dont sit here bash my car(crappy 96 carolla at the time) and try to flirt with my wife she is clearly not interested in you and that led to his arrest for"obstruction of justice" plus a bit of a ruff up on the way to the squad car. He fought it but lost bummer huh?
