The 370Z simply has different goals set by Nissan. It is a quasi-halo car for the brand now. But it is so inexpensive to manufacture simply due to the amount of parts it shares with the Infinitis and various other Nissans (from the transmission, engine, mounts, suspension components, battery, steering, pumps, interior pieces, headlight bulb and ballast, radio, navigation, user interface, brakes, this list can go on for a while).

Also its lack of practicality hurts it against the Mustang and Camaro, which has always been the case historically - starting from the late 70s. But a lot of it comes down to the fact that Nissan simply makes fewer of them intentionally, as well. The market was saturated with 350Zs, and that really, really destroyed the car's resale value and began to slightly hurt its image.

The 370Z was approved on the assumption of 30k units sold in the first year. We haven't even seen that almost three years in.

I know there is always a lot of talk about the "next generation" Z, but with sales numbers like that you have to wonder if Nissan can make the numbers work, and if the Z brand is worth it to them to keep going in its current state. I tend to think if they do keep the Z they will try to reinvent it as an eco-friendly sports car... an electric or hybrid sports car that everyone can afford.

In any case the 370 will definitely go down as one of those rare cars. 350s are all over the place because they managed to sell a bunch of them each year from '03-'08 (or '09 for the roadster), but the 370 will never really saturate the road like the 350 did.
