If your parents were rich and handed you a 370z would you turn it down because you didn't earn it or because you thought you weren't responsible enough to handle it? It's called envy, we all have it, quit wasting your time thinking about it.

Fact of the matter is some people are rich, some people are poor, some kids are spoiled and poor, some kids are appreciative and rich, and vice versa. bottom line is, you are full of sh*t if you say that you would turn down your parents giving you a car, assuming it wasn't adversely affecting them financially, ie, they are rich.

i think a good thing to do is if you are actuall wealthy, and DO want to buy your kid a nice car, make them work and pay for part of so they can appreciate it. You make them pay 10-20k of a 40k car, its as if they bought a little honda, and you paid the rest. They'll appreciate it, but they will just be driving a nicer car. i've seen kids driving lambo's and stuff, and i'm like 'wtf' but at the same time, if my parents were THAT loaded, and bought my one, why the hell would i say 'excuse me, i don't deserve this, please do not give me this supercar'


i'm 22, i bought my own Z. i really dont give a **** if people think my parents bought it for me b/c i'm young. Anyone who would think that and not know otherwise, is obviously no one important to me, so i really don't care. but if If my parents were loaded and said 'hey put in 40k and we'll get you a 911 or audi R8 or something, i'd say 'hell yes'

something that IS funny about this whole 'parents buying kid a car' thing, is when the parents don't let the kid mod the car, or get a manual transmission or something. i' have had people bitch to me and be like 'yea i wanted a manual but my dad said i couldn't.' i'm like.... 'and you are complaining about the bmw your parents bought you? yea. thought so' or like 'i wanted to get an exhaust or body kit but my dad wont let me modify the car' that situation is funny.

You are absolutely correct. The teenager being bought the car is not at fault in this situation, it is the parents who are being totally irresponsible.

When I see a young guy driving an expensive car that was obviously bought for him, my first thought is "Parents must be a couple of idiots".

Why? To them, shelling out 40K might be like some poor family scraping togather for a beater. Why does everyone with money who chooses to spend any of it have to be "an idiot"? Wouldn't the fact that they are successful enough to have that money indicate just the opposite, or is having less money now indicative of superior intelligence?

I really don't get this thread. It sounds to me like a lot of people would be happier in a country like China where they wouldn't have to contend with people who have more than them nearly so often.

I grew up in a household that hovered above the poverty line, was on foodstamps for a few months, lived in govt. housing. I must be a damn genius for it, no? Or rather, a few of my family members made stupid decisions, didn't have an education or a good job, and it landed me in a world of "have-nots" for a while. I think I'll pick the latter, more reasonable option. But I didn't hate my friends with new mustang GT's or BMW's or whatever they had (nor did they wreck them). I just drove my old beat-down cop car and gazed longingly at C&D and R&T magazines in the library.

They are just as successful as I am. The only difference was that they never had the "have-nots" that I did growing up. Their parents inspired them, and they inspired me. I think the only reason people dislike others because of them having more is because they accept that deep-down, they aren't as good as that person that has more because they think they can't do what it takes to have more.

thats a good point. chances are, someone buying their kid an m3 or w/e is spending way less of a % of their income or savings than parents buying their kid a beater.

My first car was worth @ $2500 and a lot of hours in the driveway. Roughly 10% of my parent's income at the time. A used M3 E46 is worth 25K. About 10% of "some rich kid's" parent's income.

Excluding actors and actresses it generally comes out to the higher the intelligence the more money. Unfortunately the more money, the worse decisions you make, then that's being unwise not stupid.

When it comes to winning the lotto or something, okay, but people who attain/maintain that wealth typically don't do it through making bad decisions.

Actually I suppose that was taken a bit out of context. I meant by people who get an extraordinarily amount of money without any real work.
