What is "Hill Assist?" What is its purpose? Please explain it to me in layman's terms, because to the best of my knowledge, the hand-brake is used on an up-hill

Please explain it to me in layman's terms, because to the best of my knowledge, the hand-brake is used on an up-hill start, and engine-braking is used going down a hill. Neither of these require some fancy crap with a new name like "Hill Assist".
